Hi John! You have no idea how these videos helps with my husband and I's longing for Japan. We typically visit twice a year and we were lucky to visit last March before the shutdown. We miss everything, the noice, the jpop blasting from buildings, Yamanote train announcements, and the FOOD!

On my trip last year I spent a day on the east side of the Sumida, because it was pouring rain which cancelled the Emperor's coronation ceremony and I couldn't think of anything better to do on short notice. I ended up in Monzen-Nakacho by early evening and found the sake shop/izakaya John had highlighted in a previous video of the neighbourhood. I met a sake sommelier there, she pushed me into eating fermented squid guts and other really weird traditional bar snacks, and I got buzzed enough on sampling sake that I ended up buying a bottle to take back home just because it had rabbits on the label. It was a pretty great day.

I lived in Monzennakacho for eight years, 1999-2007. Wonderful area that is a little off the beaten path yet still so close to main areas like Nihonnashi, Otemachi, Tokyo Station, and Ginza. Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

I want to visit Japan SO bad. I've wanted to since like...junior high. Now I'm 33 and have an 11 year old daughter and she wants to go to Japan one day too. I hope I can save up and plan a trip for myself and my daughter some day, we've never been on vacation outside the US. One day we'll go :) I have to learn some basic Japanese first though.

My parents and I would have loved to gone back this year and my dad absolutely loved those alleys you showes it reminds him of when he lived there in the 50s and 60s! It gives me the same vibe as alley you see on the show "Midnight Diner" althought that is supposed to be based in Shinjuku. Keep up the great content!

I've stayed in Monzen-Nakacho area in September 2019. It's a gem of a place. When my Japanese work colleagues asked and I told them that I stayed in Monzen-Nakacho for that trip, they were very surprised that I know about the place and staying there.

“Sometimes it pays to look down” used to mean you find coins on the sidewalk, now it’s LED manhole covers, or tiles painted with city mascots or sumo wrestlers 😂 The Japanese would probably leave coins they find on sidewalks anyway.
