Welcome to Tokyo Station!
So - shall we take a quick tour around? Remember these two places: Marunouchi and Yaesu? After this live stream, you will know them well!
Knowing the big train stations in Tokyo is important when traveling around so in this episode, I’ll share the two sides of Tokyo Station.
Getting lost has never been so much fun.

I am currently riding the Toikado Shinkansen from Tokyo to Hiroshima and your advice to use the Nihonbashi station entrance was extremely useful - it made finding the gate and getting to the correct platform an absolute breeze. Thank you!!

I think just getting a feel of the Station, the sounds and way the signs are laid out is enough to help acquaint yourself with the place. If you know where to look, all you need to navigate is there. It’s a little different than other station but a lot is similar. Since the renovations have been complete, I’ve had to re-learn the station a little.

As you say in the video, the size is intimidating and it's easy to get overwhelmed. Thanks for taking some of intimidation away! The luggage and delivery service is really good to know. I always wondered about the luggage lockers...how long can you keep you luggage there before it gets removed?

That “one last Ramen” is exactly what we had before we departed to Narita. It was a special stop to say thanks to an old owner of a Ramen shop who offered to walk us to our hotel 6 blocks away, I politely refused as I did not want to inconvenience the guy and cause he would had to have been in his 60’s. Either way, a businessman walked us the distance after I ask for directions. Absolutely blown away by the hospitality !

Hey John thanks for making it easier to navigate this station. Been a viewer for about 2 years and it’s been fun warching you. Im in tokyo for vacation, and can speak some japanese which makes things much easier/interactive. I was actually in Tokyo station myself today, as my brother and i were heading to osaka, but unfortunately all buses and trains were canceled so we had to change up our trip a bit. I actually saw you from afar and wanted to say hi, but i wasnt able to 😔. Keep up the great work.

Hopefully the shinkansen is back on schedule tomorrow. Sorry to hear about the change in plans. How long are you staying for? Thank you again and have a wonderful trip! ONLY in JAPAN * GO I didnt expect a reply from John himself 😄. Im staying for about 6 more days, and it seems like it’s mostly gonna be in tokyo other than couple of day trips here and there. I’ve actually been to japan a few times, but I wanted to introduce my brother to the western part of japan, especially kyoto. As it has a different feel compared to other cities here in my opinion. Fortunately, staying in tokyo has its perks, as each district has its own distinct twist. Thanks for replying, and congratulations on getting married. I wasnt able to watch the whole stream that day, as the time difference was pretty big.

Thanks for showing us this, and especially thanks for taking chat questions at the end. As far as I can tell, I think the viewers liked that. Thank Jim! Yes, I think ending with a Q&A with these kinds of streams is helpful -- but wow! I got a lot of question that had nothing to do with it. hahaha! I should announce it before hand that I'll do a Q&A at the end. Right -- I think if I can make them more interactive and take advantage of the platform that it IS LIVE, it will be way more fun. Greta ideas coming and I'm getting more used to it as well. Summer will make it easier to stream - longer days, nicer weather from mid July!! Gonna be an amazing summer!!

I can remember running around that area of the station looking for a coin locker on day 1 of my last visit to Japan as I needed to get something in Shinjuku before heading for Osaka. I would have used the luggage delivery service if I had found it first. I believe that there was some construction work going on in that area at the time (mid December 2017).

I ended up on the Maronouchi side in error and couldn't figure out how to get around the other side of the station so I ended up walking the long way around where you pointed. This wasn't popular with me as I was covering 10km per day on foot so I was pretty foot sore by that point.

I have plan to go Japan after COVID-19 gone, i get little confuse about shinkansen seat. If i need to go to Kawaguchiko from Shinjuku Station, the option we have is use JR Chuo Line, which is a shinkansen, we should get reserved ticket if we use shinkansen? We have plan to use Tokyo Wide Pass as a cheaper option rather than individual shinkansen ticket, thankyou.

@onlyinjapanGO

The Marunouchi side (not Yaesu) is closer. From the basement, you can enter and easily get to the platform. From Yaesu, it's about a 600 meter (half mile) walk. If you have heavy luggage, I would highly recommend the bus. It's much more convenient, cheaper and easy to go right into a taxi to the hotel. The train is not very convenient IMHO. Best, John

I am planning a trip to Tokyo next year, however, I will be traveling solo with two pieces of luggage. Is there support or concierge service that I could arrange in advance? Thank you!!
@onlyinjapanGO
@onlyinjapanGO 3 жыл бұрын
Can you just take less luggage? Or have a base and leave your big one there? You can also just send it the night before and it’ll arrive the next day via takyubin at the hotel or a convenient store. It’s reasonably priced. There are escalators and elevators at big stations. In tough situations, go slow, just take one bag halfway down and then the next. I’ve had to manage it like that before in many trips. Japan’s pretty safe - no one is going to run away with it :)

Does the Keisei Bus from Narita airport drop off us at Nihonbashi side of the Tokyo Station ¿
@onlyinjapanGO
@onlyinjapanGO 6 жыл бұрын
No, it's not. The Keisei Bus is actually across the street from Tokyo Station on the Yaseu side (not far from the secret door I show!) I always take the bus to Narita called TCAT (Tokyo City Air Terminal). It's cheapest and arrives at HAKOZAKI interchange which does not have a lot of traffic. From there, it is super simple to catch a taxi to anywhere in the city - and if you have luggage, you want to avoid the train station after a long flight!

Have a look at Tokyo Station on Google Maps. INCREDIBLE. It extends for a couple kilometers, with lots of side galleries and entrances. I went through there one night in the early 1990s, was on transit but met a friend at Shinjuku station to buy some used manga for some other friends... getting from the Narita Express to the Chuo line was interesting, missed the last Express back and had to take the local train (which didn't go all the way back to the airport... ^_^;;) There's supposedly a vegan ramen place in there somewhere (which will probably be the only ramen I will try if I go to Japan - plenty of halal Japanese ramen here, though..)..

PSA: You could not walk through the station by using your IC card i.e enter through the Yaesu side and try to exit via the Marunouchi side. I didn't know that during my first time in Tokyo. >_< That is because I didn't think there was another gate on the other side.
@onlyinjapanGO
@onlyinjapanGO 6 жыл бұрын
RIGHT! You can totally walk through but I think if you don't go anywhere, you can do it but the bell rings when you exit -- the staff asks you if you went anywhere and it creates a jam for other passengers so I take the "shortcut"
