A few years after the end of the Second World War which brought Japan to its knees, the Japanese government decided to build an immense steel tower,
- firstly out of necessity to provide the Tokyo region with a relay antenna for television and radio,
- and also out of a desire to show the world the rapid economic recovery of the country.
The project was entrusted to Tachû Naitô, an academic nicknamed “the father of earthquake-resistant architecture”.
Tokyo Tower required 4,000 tons of steel, a third of which came from the casting of 90 American tanks damaged during the Korean War.
Which ultimately gives a relatively light weight to the Tokyo Tower, compared to the 7,300 tons of the Eiffel Tower.
