Thoughtseize. It’s the spell of choice that’s become eponymous with Hand Disruption. It’s been at the core of many popular formats for many years now - whether in Theros Standard or in Modern, where it sees the most play. Even when Thoughtseize isn’t legal in a format, the family of hand disruption spells that are legal see a lot of play.
Hand disruption is one of the most annoying forms of interaction to play against, and oftentimes, one of the hardest forms of interaction to master. Today, we’ll be digging in deep into what you need to know in order to maximise the payoff from using Hand Disruption spells. We’ll be looking primarily at the common play patterns and tips and tricks of using Thoughtseize.
We’re not newbies anymore, but we’re not yet ready to Rival the MPL. Tolarian Tutor is for people who already play Friday Night Magic and enjoy playing the ladder on Arena, but want to improve and get better. This is for intermediates, and this is Tolarian Tutor!

3:50 I generally agree with these points but it all depends on the sort of deck you are playing of course. If you are playing eight rack then Raven's Crime is not a bad choice since you are completely focused on them discarding a lot of cards (so eventually they will have to throw away their good stuff) but also emptying your own hand as quickly as possible to get more value out of Liliana's +1.

Thoughtseize, a great card in 60 card constructed but not so useful in commander as commander players typically have enough answers that a little bit of targeted hand disruption doesnt really do a whole lot, but in modern? Total powerhouse! Also i enjoyed this detailed philosophy on hand attack ^^
@JonaxII
@JonaxII 3 жыл бұрын
Actually, it's still pretty awesome in duel commander. The main issue with it in normal commander is not based on deckbuilding differences, but more in having three opponents, leading to what you said - it not being able to get all answers with it. Even more important: you set yourself (and the victim) at a -1 card disadvantage compared to the other two players.
@charleybrett1663
@charleybrett1663 3 жыл бұрын
@@JonaxII I agree, although I think it gets better for cedh (even in a 4 player group) as it can be used like how prof talked about in legacy to check for counters before attempting your combo. Of course, there are still potentially two other players with counters, but that's still a 1/3 improvement and it can be better in certain scenarios (such as if one of your opponents is nonblue, or tapped out).
@JonaxII
@JonaxII 3 жыл бұрын
@@charleybrett1663 true, but these kind of all in combo decks (like Sidisi ad nauseum, I love that pile, lol) tend to be at the lower powered end of the cedh spectrum, so I tend to forget them... The dreaded "people outside cedh hate me if I play it, in cedh I rarely win, so I can never actually have fun" power level, at which somehow half of my brews end up.

An appreciation for thoughtsieze was what led me to my prefered playstyle: Midrange. Back when I was first really getting into magic and looking up professional decklists, I eventually ran across a list for Modern Jund from one of the world championship, Ken Watanabe's I think. Out of everything on that decklist, I understood the purpose of the hand disruption cards LONG before I ever understood the worth of most of the rest of the spells on that list (it is actually embarassing how long it took me to figure out that tarmagoyf was good)
