there are so many words here that Alter is translating into our understanding of the public sphere. khaal, khaali, basnaa, basti, viraaanaa, and then he recites bahadur shah zafar before he recites ghalib to really access a sense of loss. it feels like a blessing to view this, something more than just "watching", one feels pulled into the river of a great soul
