I love the comparison between how Lord Grantham and Lady Mary treated Branson the chauffeur and how they treated Tom, their brother and son in law. He really became an integral member of the family.

I always resented the death of dear Sybil, but if she never had died this dynamic between Mary, Robert and Tom wouldn't have flourished for what it has become.

While I liked Sybil a lot as a person, I didn't like her as much as a character as she seemed a little to perfect at times (and that youngest wild born free spirited better then everyone else stereo type) I think as a character she would not have worked for more seasons. And like you said, her death ment for whole new fresh dynamics between Tom and the fam that ended up becomming my favorite part of the show. Same with Matthew. I loved those 2 characters a lot, but think the show was better for losing them. There was a limit to what kind of stories you could tell with them.
@jennifersivewright31172 жыл бұрын
I thought the same. It makes me feel all warm and fuzzy when Robert talks about Tom. Probably echoes real life where people are vehemently against someone but then find they love them.

@@amberanimesybil was to downton abbey what ned stark was to game of thrones. A character most of us can relate to and appreciate but that is too good for their world and thus are doomed to die early to set up the dynamics of the show. Matthew I feel could've lasted a bit longer, but that's the overall issue of writing a character whose arc has already ended, or end very early in the show

I loved Tom's transition into the family but it must have been hard on the servants as well to see him rise above them and become a loved member of the family. The affection Mary and Edith show Tom in this scene apon his arrival is definately a sign that he is no longer one of them and is now firmly ensconced in the upper class fold of the family!

Is it just me or might Tom have just become Robert and Cora's favourite son-in-law over the years? :)
@BlastFromThePastTheGoodOldDays2 жыл бұрын
Tom was their longest lasting son-in law, so he had a deeper relationship with them. Mary was widowed- Matthew had previously been the favourite. Edith's husband out rank's them but she didn't get married until the end of the show

As much as I love Downton Abbey, this was the only scene that really got under my skin. Mrs Hughes literally had a cold war with Mary to have the wedding her way but in the end, instead of making the epsiode about the newlyweds, they decided the steal their thunder and make it about the Masters .. this is the only epsiode which they could have blissfully ended with Carson's speech 😪 or could have made Tom appear before the wedding commenced 🤣 mixed feelings

Sybil died because the actress wanted to leave. If not she would have been there which would’ve been nicer.

Her death as what made it real. Her death was the most excruciating scene i had seen till that point in television history.
@tombstonerforever93742 жыл бұрын
Had Sybil not died, Tom would not have been as loved by the family as everyone would have just tolerated him as he was the husband of Sybil. The Crawleys each have a special relationship with Tom and they wouldn't have spoken to him much if Sybil was still alive. My hot take.

Sybbie, George, Marigold and Mary's daughter could grow up to be the next Mary, Edith, Sybil and Matthew.
@BlastFromThePastTheGoodOldDays2 жыл бұрын
I'd rather hope they wouldn't grow up to be the next Mary and Matthew seeing as Sybbie George and Marigold are all 1st cousins. While not unheard of to marry cousins, not encouraged either. Mary and Matthew were distantly related but not close blood relation. Plus Mary and Edith were awful to each other.

@@babsgrayson8432 The girls could be like Cora Isobel and Violet in personality. WHich is similar to Mary Edith and Sybil but more refined. Seeing the next Gen would be awesome. especially if the children of the servants were there living alongside them, showing how things change and class becomes less relevant. Like if they were friends with Anna and Bates baby or Daisy had a child or something

OMG i was so fking happy. yes there is still the upper class and normal people thingy but what i enjoy about the show so much is how you treat your family members by always supporting them even though you dont necessarily agree with them, showing respect to others people in general and rewarding the people who should be rewarded. when a member/servant/character leave the show that makes me very upset ☹

Tom could choose another moment and not steal the show. Ofc here the newlyweds "look happy" for them because it's a tv show, in real life they would probably think "two new people to serve, same salary" and they would prefer to stay the center of attention on their own wedding day

I ship them too, and am happy they never became an item. That would have been weird for the family dynamic and slightly pushing it in a series that already pushed the limits on what was believable a little to often. Tom canonly appears like a brother to Mary and Edith. Not a replacement sibling, rather a whole new one. For fanfics I dig me some Tom/Mary and even Tom/Edith. He gets these ladies. But for tv story telling, him being a dear and reliable brother is so much better. Not every meaningful and important relationship in life is that of romance.

And Tom certainly wasn’t afraid to confront her. Remember when he tells her she is a bully after ruining Edith’s life?? What a man.
