Downton Abbey

4 жыл бұрын

Mr. and Mrs. Harding arrive at Downton, but Anna recognises Mrs. Harding and Greets her as Gwen, the former Downton housemaid who previously left to better herself. Barrow attempts to embarrass Gwen at the dinner table but fails to do so when the family realise that Gwen's success is down to the support of their darling, Sybil.
From Season 6 Episode 4: Lady Shackleton visits Downton, with her nephew, Henry Talbot. Elsewhere, Sargeant Willis asks Baxter to testify against the man whom she was involved with when she stole from her previous employer, she later agrees to do so in order to protect future female victims. Cora persuades Robert and Mary to lease Yew Tree farm to Mt. Mason. Anna is rushed to London to have surgery to save their baby. Mr. and Mrs. Carson return from their honeymoon, ready to move into their cottage.

The thing left unmentioned in this scene is that while Sybil did help Gwen so much, it was Gwen who took the initiative to get a typewriter and take the shorthand and typing courses in the first place. The parallels between this scene and Mary’s spilling Edith’s secret to Bertie are incredible. Right down to the exact same way they both try to defend their bad actions, with Barrow saying “I couldn’t have known she was planning to lie her way through” and Mary saying “How was I to know”. Plus they were both motivated by jealousy to try and ruin the other person’s happiness. No wonder Mary liked Barrow, they were both capable of the same cruelty.

One of the moving things here, towards the end, is that while Gwen i telling the story of her relationship with Sybil , and everyone is remembering what a lovely person she was, Barrow is standing looking both ashamed and deeply unhappy. Sybil was not just kind to Gwen. She had worked with Thomas as an equal in every way. They had seen men with terrible injuries. They had supported a man who suicided. They had nursed Matthew Crawley, when he could not even put himself on the bed pan. Sybil was, for a time, his dearest friend.

I love this moment because it resonates with all the storylines at this moment. Tom just got back from Boston with Sybbie because this house where he knew Sybil is his home. Robert has to take a decision about giving Yew Tree Farm to Mr Mason or not and Cora will ask him what Sybil would want them to do. Mary got her brother-in-law back, the former chauffeur that only Sybil was open-minded enough to love despite the difference in social rank, and after her death Mary accepted him as a brother and was better person thanks to him and the memory of their late Sybil. Edith is trying to find her place at her magazine and at Downton, and seeing Gwen's story she finally decides to take a woman editor.

I love the fact that Thomas had to sit and listen as Gwen explained how Sybil was the one who helped her and how the family treated Gwen very nicely and were ashamed that they did not know her after working for 2 years. Thomas must have been burning up inside knowing that he failed to ruin her lunch. Thomas was a evil person, but in the last seasons they did show that deep inside he was a very scared person who was not happy being his self and was full of jealousy for anyone who made it out of service. Even though I hated Thomas I have to admit his part made the show very interesting.

Sybil told Robert, "Gwen is in the library being interviewed" and he complained he couldn't use the library because of a housemaid. Also, when Pamuk was staying at Downton the whole family were talking about Gwen during dinner. I don't see why the Crawleys should be expected to remember a maid (who now has a completely different kind of job and a different last name) who only worked there for two years. In addition, Gwen worked at Downton before the war, before it became a convalescent home. So a lot of people had been in and out of that house since she was last there.

So I can somewhat understand Barrow's nastiness to Gwen, born out of his jealousy. But what reason has Mary got for being nasty to Gwen? Soon as she heard that Gwen used to be a housemaid she immediately adopted a condescending manner. Even Edith and Cora said they were at fault for not recognising her but Mary is simply being nasty to someone who already feels very uncomfortable. She always looks down on anyone she considers beneath her.

I'm thinking that Gwen didn't say anything to Thomas because she hadn't know until right before she arrived at Downton that she would be there at all, didn't have a chance to prepare and didn't know who would be at the door. I think thats the entire point of the class system. Rose is an aristocrat and is thus able to do as she pleases. Her actions are simply looked at as eccentric or at worst some societal faux pas. On the other hand if Gwen was to do that, she would not only piss off her benefactor Lady Painswick and also cheese off the Crawleys.
