In so far as sports, sure. Teamwork means jack diddly in most workplaces though, because success is rarely shared equitably in the same way as achievement is in sports. Make your buck to take care of you and yours, family/ friends next, then community. Great speech, but not sure about that tan on Tom (little much). GOAT decisions, eh. Pat's comment on youth "today" picking hats was weird though; acting like kids from his graduating class weren't on ESPN announcing their signings.

I don't think that's true either. TB was HISTORICALLY good at one very specific thing: Avoiding mistakes. He didn't throw picks, basically ever, he'd always hit the checkdown or the crosser or throw it away or even take the sack. His deep ball kinda sucked when the guy on the other end wasn't Randy Moss, but he knew it and found other ways to make his game work for the team.

It's a wonderful feeling to be terrible at something, keep working at it, realize you've become an expert, and then see the rewards. This is one of the great things in life. You don't appreciate something if you haven't earned it. Strangely the reason Tom is the goat is because the adversity and pressure never let up in his career and therefore he never got soft.

He makes a really good point about winning on a team vs winning alone. Success feels better when you have other to celebrate with, even outside of sports. As far as the college players getting paid, I think it will work itself out in time and be good or the NFL. I think it will make it easier to spot the players who love the game vs the players who love the money and attention. We will start seeing more and more highly rated kids who chase the money instead of developing, and don't get drafted where everyone thought they would as recruits. I think we will see more players being kicked off of teams in the power 5 schools, since the portal plus the pay makes it easier to replace them. I think we will see more short term NIL deals, or terms that are based on performance. When the salary cap was introduced in the NFL, it took a little while for teams to figure out how to navigate it. I think we will see something similar over the next few years in college, as teams start to figure out what works and what doesn't. I hope they don't figure it out too fast though. These schools trying to outbid everyone else for players is making it much easier for Sark to make sure the kids he's bringing to Texas are coming to work.

The major flaw in this narrative of football as a lesson in determination, emotional maturity etc. is that football guys, neither the pros nor the dudes from you local high school, don't really exceed regular people in any of these qualities. But you don’t see artists or other craftspeople doing speeches like this. Players 20 years ago had to have great success on the field to earn big money, and to get high paid media jobs or coaching jobs afterwards. Now it seems like they just want to milk the pro leagues for the most money up front. Tom Brady, Rob Gronkowski, Julien Edelman, and Teddy Brusci all have analyst jobs. Mike Vrabel coached the Titans. Josh McDaniels got 2 head coaching gigs. If Brady and Belichik didn't have that winning culture who knows how any of them would have ended up.

I don't agree with the blanket statement that everyone should play football. And this is coming from a Michigan Wolverine fan (which Brady came from). For some sized/framed or athletically inclined individuals football is easier than for others, especially if you have a mental or physical ailment. Same goes for military service. Both of these I did early in life and ended up regretting later on due to an undiagnosed mental health issue. While I did enjoy both sports and military service due to the people around me, it did in a sense take time away from other things in life that I could have been focusing on. Like education, career, family and spiritual life. On top of that for the later types life can already be hard to excruciating enough. Playing football or perhaps any other sports could do more harm than good. This is all pretty obvious and I'm sure Tom meant well. He just ended up not explaining himself fully enough. In the end I have come to the understanding that people should do things in life based on who they know they are and what they can accomplish, not what they think they can do against all odds. Leave ego out of the equation... I enjoyed your endzone color commentary of Michigan last season with Tim Tebow and the guys and gals. Keep up the good work!

know whats also hard? getting up everyday, working a menial job, living paycheck to paycheck, staying sane while doing it, like the other 98% of the world.

How do you measure GOAT status then?

He was dedicated to himself! It cost him two opportunities at having a family. Yes, he is the GOAT for football and nothing more. His choice to pursue another Super Bowl ring, like he needs the jewelry, rather than go home and help raise his kids and work on his marriage destroyed his All American boy image, for me. He is addicted to the roar of the crowd and pursues it to the exclusion of all else, just like drug addicts to heroine. I know of what I speak. It took my husband years to deal with the addiction and my son at 50 years of age still needs a crowd of acquaintances-not good healthy friendships-just lots of admirers. Not all professional athletes can manage “real life” and all the richness it has to offer. Tom Brady is one of those.
