Belichick didn't start Brady in '01! Bledsoe's injury forced him to play the backup (Brady) & he stumbled onto the GOAT! In 2000 (Bill's 1 pre-Brady season) he was 5-11 w/ Bledsoe & put Brady at QB3. The Pats were in the SB a few years before w/ Parcells & a playoff team w/ Carroll. 2000 was a huge drop-off before Brady took over in '01.

It wasn’t even that Bledsoe was bad. He was the Bills best QB for almost 20 years and set several AFC records on the squad. Def one of the top 10 QBs during his era overshadowed by Brady and being on a bad Bills team that he had to carry to some relevancy. So to me getting rid of Cam was less about Cam and how much Belicheck prefers molding new, smart talent. When he’s got a hot hand he prefers riding it over stability because he sees upside in that long term investment…and that’s not wrong. The big difference for Bill this time is I don’t think he understands how special Brady was and there’s legit AFC East competition. I do like Mac a lot, but I’m still doubtful he can carry a team like Brady did during 09-13 when the talent around him wasn’t so great. Brady’s tenacity is unique for human beings.

Fun fact: Bill Belichick had a conversation with Robert Kraft before the regular season in 2001 saying he would’ve started Brady over Bledsoe. But ultimately stuck with Bledsoe because of seniority and well the 101 million dollar contract. Belichick wanted to start Brady over Bledsoe to start the 2001 season because brady had progressed so much in the training camp and preseason. Brady had such a better training camp and preseason than Bledsoe it was hard for belichick to make the move at QB. Bledsoe played pretty well in the AFC championship game, led two offensive scoring drives (TD and field goal - other TD was a blocked FG attempt). He also had a ball almost picked late in the game which could have had a major impact on the outcome. He had been more prone to those type of plays at the tail end of his Patriots career, thus Belichick went with the QB that was more likely to make the better decisions and less likely to turn the ball over. Totally appreciate what Bledsoe did in NE, but was the right and gutsy call at the time to go with Brady!

He had the ball at Steelers 40 yard line when he took over and scored only 3 points in 2nd half. The main reason he was benched for SB, I believe, was how he played in SB between Packers vs Pats, his 4 INT cost the game and I think Belichick blamed him for that.

Bledsoe played exceptionally well considering he hadn't played in near 4 months. Keep in mind that in 2001 all the games were bumped back a week because of 9/11. Which meant there was only one week between the conference championships and the Super Bowl. So Tom only had one week to get his ankle ready, after Bledsoe had gotten them the victory in the AFC Title. Which made the call to start Brady in the Super Bowl even more controversial.

Belichick went through this in Cleveland when he got rid of Kosar. If you go to Halberstrams book, you will see Belichick was not a big fan of Bledsoe. For proof, he traded Bledsoe within the division and only lost one game to him.

Did homie say Bledsoe was drafted in 96? 😂 he was the first overall pick in 93 fam. Been a Patriots fan my whole life, the first football game I ever went to was in 93 with my uncle, I remember he had us wait super long to get this guy's autograph which didn't end up happening until later on in the season 😆 but in that moment I became a Bledsoe guy. I remember hating Tom Brady in the beginning for like the first two seasons because I felt like he eliminated Drew (which in a way did happen 😂). Obviously I eventually came around to My overall opinion of Brady being the GOAT. And even though he isn't with the Pats any longer I'm still grateful for all of the memories. Watching this first episode brought back some memories man for real

One thing that just kind of slips under this Bill Belichick keeps telling everybody now that he wanted Tom Brady to start as a rookie but why would he pay Drew Bledsoe 103 million dollars. Remember he came in to the Patriots organization as a head coach GM combo sounds like he's trying to rewrite history

@@herschelsleuth4539 Incorrect! Bledsoe started and played in the 2000 season and also started and played in the 1st two games of the 2001 season until he was taken out by Mo Lewis in the 4th quarter of the second game against the Jets. He also played later that season in the AFC championship against the Steelers after Brady went down with an ankle injury. Bledsoe was then traded to the Bills in the offseason in 2002 for a 2003 1st round pick that resulted in the Pats drafting Ty Warren.

Brady had great numbers, and playing WELL in that Steelers AFC Championship game before his injury

They were so wrong about the timeline. Bill Parcels left after the super bowl. Pete Carroll was the head coach between 97-99. Bledsoe signed in March 2001 and drafted in 1993. Belichick was hired before the 2000 season.

I don't know if they mention it in the doc but there where guys that said if Bledsoe wasn't the best teammate ever Brady wouldn't have completed a pass... Everyone loves to point out that Bledsoe came in for Brady and “won” the afc title game, but Bledsoe was terrible in that game outside of one drive. Kordell Stewart was worse than Bledsoe and the only reason the Steelers didn’t win that game
