Tom Cruise flying a Boeing Stearman biplane 'on location' at Duxford Airfield, UK on 29th September 2021 for filming of 'Mission: Impossible 8'. According to recent media reports Tom is 'learning to fly' the Stearman for a 'stunt' in the movie 'Mission:Impossible 8'. He already holds a helicopter pilots licence and a fixed wing pilots licence and also owns and flies a P-51 Mustang.
The Stearman aircraft that he's flying is equipped with two movie camera rigs, one mounted on the outer port wing struts and another on the inner starboard wing struts. Despite the media's assumptions, let's not forget that the cameras fitted to the Stearman are there because filming is being done for the movie - they're not there to record a critique of the flight or Tom Cruise's handling of the aircraft and the reason for the flights is to get material for the movie. So the way that the plane is being flown and landed is possibly intentional.
The 1943 Boeing Stearman Model 75 (E75N1), is US registered as N65691 and owned by Paramount Overseas Productions Inc. The second aircraft, another Stearman is also owned by Paramount and carries US registration N801RB. At least four Stearmans have been at Duxford for filming duties since mid September.
The aircraft are initially seen returning from a filming 'mission', before Tom later goes out again in his Stearman for some 'circuits' and 'bumps' of the airfield, shortly before the 'heavens opened' and the rain arrived.
His front seat passenger is former German Air Force Pilot and graduate of the US National Test Pilot School, Klaus Plasa.

The stearman, I worked ground crew for one years ago. It was quite an experience. In front of the prop when it was spinning, loud AF behind it you can talk at normal volume. I do feel the plane should only be painted in the Yellow/blue, the all yellow, or silver/yellow scheme. That’s how it looks best.

Yes, the ol' Stearman can be a challenge to land in a crosswind, but previous comments notwithstanding, these sure look like student landings to me. I understand that Mr. Cruise owns (and routinely flies?) a P-51, but there isn't much evidence of taildragger experience here that I see-I'm not hearing/seeing indications of throttle use when he gets slow after a bounce or too slow in the flare before touchdown. Short bursts of moderate power in these attitudes cushion any rebounding and boost flight control authority. Better not to allow the tail to drop prematurely in a wheel landing-the wings are still developing lift, and consequently, dropping the tail too early in the roll will increase lift and result in just the sort of floating, bounding, and control issues I'm seeing here-a touch of forward stick to keep the weight on the main gear wheels in the rollout till the tailwheel touches would help. Full aft stick once that tailwheel is on the ground of course. Beautiful 450 Stearmans.

Exactly right critique: better to keep it on the wheels as long as possible, pinning it to the surface…..then as she slows you can pull the control stick back … but what do I know.

Everyone is Chuck Yeager in the comments. He learned to flying a complicated helicopter in a few months and was very good at it. Who knows where he was in his experience with this airplane when this was filmed but my guess is he'll have it down pat in no time. He also drove an F1 car and did extremely well at that in no time. What about you Chuck, flown anything complicated besides you mouth?

@@bruce2357 Tom Cruise became interested in flying after filming Top Gun 1. Air show pilot Art Scholl who died while filming a sequence in the original Top Gun got Tom interested in a Pitts Special. He bought a Pitts Special S2B and flew that for many years. That's a very high performance biplane. However he was clearly struggling with the Stearman in this video.

@@bruce2357 Why yes Bruce, I have ["flown anything..."]. Restricting the record of my experience to the conventional gear (tailwheel) types I've flown alone, you can include: Citabrias (with HEEL brakes), Piper regular and super Cubs, Waco YMF-5's, Cessna 188 Agtrucks (about 800 hours of ag-time), DC-3's, Maule m7 235's, Great Lakes biplanes, a Wilga, and... Boeing Stearmans. I have roughly 8000 hours total time, 2000 or so of which was in the right seat of C-152's as a flight instructor. I hold a multi-engine ATP license. It's possible the man up front in this video is an instructor. Mr. Cruise would likely benefit from time with a good one (as I have).

That was a big difference back then between the American way of learning to fly and the British way of learning. the Stearman demanding your full attention and was a brute and nicknamed the washing machine about scared you to death! but the tiger moth on the other hand would make you fall in love with flying! it was very gentle

I learnt to fly on the Tiger Moth, and found things quite the reverse. The old saying is that the Tiger is an easy aeroplane to fly badly, but difficult to fly well, as it exaggerates any flaws in technique. On the other hand, I found the Stearman an absolute doddle to fly, a big pussy cat. Mind you, that was after 300hrs on Tiger Moths, Austers and Chipmunks.

Whew! Even for an aviation freak like Tom, a stick and rudder tail dragger like a Stearman is a big chunk to bite off! I have very little tail dragger time, I do remember for take off, stick and throttle forward! For landing, stick back in your stomach. You can watch the landings and see what a handful it is. Takes big balls and lots of practice, and there's always the present danger of a ground loop. Instructor would say, "Rudder Rudder Rudder"!!! I give TC some respect for going for it, I don't know how often he tries to tie on something like that. Pilots like me will salute the tail dragger and go for the more docile nose gear arrangement.
@billbabcock1833
@billbabcock1833 Жыл бұрын
There seem to be a few people here making negative comments about Cruise's landing at the beginning. There's not a pilot who's never floated or bounced a landing. You can tell there's a crosswind from the take offs and landings, and the windsock is fully extended so there's at least a 15 knot wind. It's easy to drop the tail too soon and generate lift, especially in a biplane. No criticism here.

I was lucky enough to have flow a Stearman, actually two, for twenty years, when ever I wanted, since I was part owner. It was the first tail dragger I flew, and any other after , was a piece of cake. The only difference between me and Mr. Cruise, was, I didn't have a lot of money as he has!I spent a lot on flying, and fulfilled my childhood dream, that was influenced by the 2nd WW news reels, of the aerial combat gun cameras.A tad less than twenty years after WW2, I got my private pilots license. Loved every second of it.

‘Love TC (‘mostly off-screen!) & I’m not a pilot, but noticed the difference between initial landings of both planes. After this vid, YT suggests ‘How to fly a Stearman - Landings’, and the answer was there in the first of 13 mins; to land as slow as possible on all 3 wheels thro’ a ‘3-point stall’. ‘Can’t fault TC; there was a v strong cross-wind, and he has to keep landing his P51 out of his mind...! But you’d hope he’d hook up with plane#2 pilot and/or get tougher Instructor...

He is not flying it well. Overcontrolling, bouncing and yawing all over the place. The Stearman easily settles in with its heavy weight. It handles high winds very well. @@pittss2c601 So my knowledge of and experience with that bird is it was built as a primary trainer with tall, narrow landing gear. The gear mandates a soft & competent hand on approach and touchdown. Its a "numbers" bird. You carry too much energy & she will float and/or bounce. The tail will come around on you if you're not on top of it with the pedals. She's built that way on purpose, but still a beauty to fly.

What a litany of errors all lined up for disaster - buy a plane built by somebody else who redesigns the positioning of the fuel tank selector and fuel gauges, fly the plane despite problems seeing the fuel gauges and being able to access and turn the fuel tank selector switch, refuse offered fuel. A very sad end.

Way too fast landing for a Stearman. Giant bounces…practicing landings on camera can be humiliating.

I'm confused. That looks like a Waco YMF, not a Boeing Stearman.

It carries US FAA Registration N65691 which is recorded as a Boeing E75N1 Stearman and has 'Stearman' written on the tail, so unless somebody is playing a really good practical joke, I'm assuming it's a Stearman. That said, I have no experience of the WACO YMF - there is only 1 on the UK register and that isn't flying at the moment - looking at pictures of the YMF, yes it looks similar and a lovely looking aeroplane. The tail shape is much larger and more rounded than the Stearman and the angle between the upper and lower wings looks greater on the YMF than the Stearman with the YMF upper wing further forward. The undercarriage design appears to be different with large wheel spats and wide supports on the YMF and the engine cowling has ribs around it - lots of subtle differences that to me say that this definitely isn't a WACO YMF. But the YMF looks like a beauty!

Sadly China told our EU politicians that they wont do any business with underdeveloped countries that still allow CO2 emitting traffic, aircrafts or industry after 2030...I am sure USA and UK also will be forced by China to 100% electric traffic because today no industrialized country can afford sanctions by China....:-( China also banned all kind of synthetic fuels or hydrogen combustion. Because these are not energy efficient)

If they did then that is very hypocritical of them - no surprise there - considering that they are one of the worst offending CO2 emitting countries. Regardless of this Boeing Stearman like this and others will still be flying in and after 2030. Why? 1/. There are so few of them that the CO2 caused is so infinitesimally small that it will make no difference, 2/. They are owned by rich people and 'money talks' 3/. Ethan Hunt will save the World, 4/. If Ethan Hunt fails, Maverick will save the World, 5/. Any carbon produced can be offset by watering and mowing my lawn and allowing the grass to grow greener! (No forests were destroyed in typing this comment!) 🙏
