Episode 2 finishes our Facebook parody conversation touching on James Crenshaw, Don Mayfield, Redboy, and other topics.
We have had a lot of interest from the first video, even reactions to our reactions of Facebook dogmen. We appreciate the interest and you are welcome to keep riding the wave. All critiques and judgements are welcome to help us to continue to get better, no matter how non-sensical or insignificant the source.
We will record again December 16th, 2023 and put out a video every other Sunday in 2024. Keep the questions coming in the comments and we will do our best to cover as many as possible after the pre-planned topic of conversation.

Enough about the how do you feel about so and so. That’s all opinion based and just like you or me depending on who you ask you’ll get a different answer. When your speaking with a great man in anything the goal is to let him riff and just sit back and listen. I’ve spoke to Tom for hours and those conversations will be forever remembered. Mr. Egan Skinner told me thirty-five years before I talked with Tom. That the sire of Bass Red Boy was Teal's Tip. Teal's Susie Que was a full litter sister and also a three-time winner. I believe one more was Skinner's Dummy and Loposay's Beanie.

Hello Tom, I do remember that dog Mr. Bourbon in my pedigrees. This dog was back in V.J. and our Orbie Coplin dogs. That dog is listed a good many times in our O. Coplin pedigrees. Heinzl/ Royce/E. Winningham/Kinard had dogs that had that dog in their bloodlines. Would like to add that Pat Patrick a couple weeks or less before moving down to Arizona. He and a few dog men visited Mr. Coplin and they rolled some dogs. Mr. Coplin got the best of the rolls with one of his male dogs showing extra good. Mr. Coplin made the mistake of showing Pat and group his dog yard. He told and showed them of his better dogs and one very good brood bitch. Dog yard was aways from his house. Week or so later those specific dogs were stolen, and Patrick had moved and long gone. Mr. Coplin called me and was highly upset. He was up in age at that time. Mr. Coplin like some of those old timers believed that if you have a game line of dogs with no bite or ability that adding some of that old Lightner Red nose Blood into that line. Can add bite back and deeper gameness. Enjoying your interviews. Take care and God Bless. @@tomgarner54

It was Dean Plemmons, Egan Skinner and a Wallace in Cheraw County. That were trying to revive the Red Nose Lightner dogs and the later smaller version of Lightner's dogs. Some of it was also crossed to the Cotton's Bullet stud dog. Mr. Skinner lost most of his dogs before he moved to Charleston S.C. He lived on a creek and a flash type flood drowned a good many. Those last handful of dogs he had mostly were brindle and black. An Indian dog man in N.C. last name Lambert had a few of those dogs. I was young and dumb back then, so missed out on some of those old bloodlines that are no more. V.J. is down to about six or so dogs, not in good health. He kept what we had blended for around 40 years. @@tomgarner54

Ive never heard Old Family Red Nose Dogs to be described as aggressive but they were described as being the type of dog that would hunt and wait their time for when the opponent is tired and to finish. I think it was Lightner/ who had to write an Article to try to lesson the craze there was for the Old Family Reds. When Richard Stratton saw Tombstone it reminded him of the the Old Red Type. The dog we had was a repeat breeding of the little gator Dog . A dog called gardner spooky We ended up with champion black smoke Champion black devil. Two time winner spit who lost To champion Mamba going for her championship. And two time winner copenhagen That mister bean owned . Cross great with the red boy and rascal dogs . Never got a chance to talk to Mr. Gardner. Or meet him . The dead have great luck with his dogs . Don't know if these podcasts are helping or harming the dog game. It's good to know the history. And the knowledge that Mr. Gardner shares. But to bash. Legendary dog men , Was completely unnecessary Most old dog men were outlaws They lived by their own rules And no, some of them probably wasn't nobody. You wanted to set an extra kitchen table for dinner But what we are talking about is what they Contributed to The dog game . Very few people in this dog Game old school or modern carry a clean slate Someone out there somewhere has something negative to say. Great interview, Mr. Gardner. I know it bakes for a better podcast, but just think it's unnecessary to do that

The number of generations it would take to breed a dog with specific traits depends on several factors, including the complexity of the traits, the genetic variation of the breed, and the selection pressure applied during breeding. However, it is generally estimated that it would take at least several generations, and possibly as many as 10 or more generations, to reliably breed a dog with a new or enhanced trait. For example, a study published in the journal Genetics in 2019 found that it took an average of 14 generations of selective breeding to increase the amount of white fur in a population of Labrador retrievers. This suggests that it would likely take a similar number of generations to breed a dog with other complex traits, such as a new coat color or a specific behavioral trait. The genetic variation of the breed also plays a role in determining how many generations of breeding are needed to achieve a desired trait. If the breed has a lot of genetic variation, then it will be easier to select for the desired trait and the trait will be more likely to become fixed in the population. However, if the breed has low genetic variation, then it will be more difficult to select for the desired trait and it may take more generations to achieve the desired outcome. Finally, the selection pressure applied during breeding also affects the number of generations needed to achieve a desired trait. If breeders are very selective and only mate dogs that have the desired trait, then the trait will become fixed in the population more quickly. However, if breeders are less selective, then it will take more generations to achieve the desired outcome. In general, it is important to note that breeding dogs is a complex process that should only be undertaken by experienced breeders who are knowledgeable about genetics and who are committed to the welfare of the animals. Breeders should always prioritize the health and well-being of the dogs they breed, and they should never breed dogs for traits that could make them more susceptible to disease or injury.

What are some traits that makes dogs more susceptible to diseases, and why would somebody breed traits that they know will jeopardize the health of their dogs?
@socratesXLIX
@socratesXLIX 7 ай бұрын
@@arnoldragland2591 Due to their history of being bred for fighting and athleticism, American Pit Bull Terriers (APBTs) have undergone significant selective breeding, leading to some genetic predispositions and health concerns. Here are some negative effects of heavy inbreeding specific to APBTs: Skin Issues: Allergic dermatitis: APBTs have a higher prevalence of allergic dermatitis, causing skin irritation, itching, and inflammation. This can be triggered by environmental allergens like pollen or dust mites, or even food ingredients. Demodicosis: This skin condition, caused by a naturally occurring mite, can manifest as hair loss, scaling, and crusting, particularly in young puppies or immunocompromised dogs. Inbreeding can worsen the severity and recurrence of demodicosis. Ichthyosis: This rare skin disorder causes dry, scaling skin and can be difficult to manage, requiring lifelong treatment. Musculoskeletal Problems: Hip dysplasia: This malformation of the hip joint can lead to pain, lameness, and arthritis. Inbreeding increases the risk of inheriting this genetic condition in APBTs. Cruciate ligament tears: The cruciate ligaments stabilize the knee joint. APBTs, particularly those bred for athleticism, are prone to tearing these ligaments due to their active lifestyles and breed's predisposition. Patellar luxation: This condition involves the kneecap slipping out of place, causing pain and lameness. Inbreeding can increase the risk of this hereditary condition in APBTs. Neurological Issues: Cerebellar ataxia: This neurological disorder affects coordination and balance, leading to tremors, stumbling, and head tremors. It can be diagnosed early in life and requires supportive care. Seizures: APBTs are predisposed to various types of seizures, including idiopathic epilepsy, which can be difficult to control and have a significant impact on their quality of life. Other Health Concerns: Cardiac issues: Inherited heart defects like cardiomyopathy and arrhythmias can occur in APBTs, leading to decreased stamina, shortness of breath, and even sudden death. Autoimmune diseases: Some APBTs are prone to developing autoimmune disorders like hypothyroidism, which disrupts hormone production and affects metabolism, skin, and energy levels. Eye problems: Cataracts, entropion (inward rolling eyelids), and cherry eye (prolapsed third eyelid) are some of the eye issues that can affect APBTs and require veterinary intervention. It's important to note that not all APBTs will develop these health problems, and many lead healthy lives. However, being aware of the potential consequences of heavy inbreeding can help breeders make informed decisions and encourage responsible breeding practices that prioritize the long-term health and well-being of the breed.

@@catfishapprentice9299 The American Kennel Club (AKC) does not currently have a specific coefficient of inbreeding (COI) limit for American Staffordshire Terriers (AmStaffs). This recommendation is based on the general principle that avoiding excessive inbreeding helps to maintain the health and genetic diversity of a breed.

Three questions for Tom! Who does he have frozen semen off of and are they available for the public? Who are his favorite three dogs from the pass and present and why? If he can go back in time and change anything as far as in his program what would he change?

Funny Richard Stratton said a very similar thing. He said the best dog(s) he ever saw were two brothers out west in California. They were Blue Dogs. This story comes off the back of him just finishing explaining just how prominent the Blue Strain of dogs actually were...

watching this for the the third time. just so much information and food for thought. it occurred to me just now, 3 questions - 1. i don't use facebook, but i do have an account so i can at least open pages. where is this FB page, so i can ask a question next time? 2. who's the interviewer? what's he up to? he sounds cool. and knowledgable in his own right. 3. when they say redboy is ofrn, do they mean tom's tramp? or further back?

not to be pedantic, but i believe the quote is actually "the great (or rather PERFECT) is the enemy of the good." but point taken. that said, i wish i could hang out with tom all the time. maybe i'll buy a piece of dirt down the road from bull dog hill. i would love to hear tom's thoughts on lines coming out of couturier's heavy Ruffian and Bolio blood, the way they started to turn blue and bringing back in more traditional, frisco based lines, on bottom. i got a guy who is basically that - heavy ruffian/bolio on top, and frisco on bottom. he's big. and he's pretty. but he is fearless and proven - at least to the extent that is possible these days . he works hard. and he's a great house dog too. maybe buy a little black gyp off tom?

re Aesthetics/forums, can we talk about parameters of "breeding for color"? forum talk is absolutely almost snobbishly anti breeding for color. but we all know that the early dogmen saw color as very important, whether by virtue of their line breeding conforming to a particular color, or because they had real beliefs that all red dogs are X or all black dogs are Y ... where do we draw the line? for instance, if i have a hard working dog with a lot of pink skin, who gets sunburned and freckled, isn't it okay for me to try and preserve the coat color that is working for me, but try and protect the dogs from sun exposure? isn't that a legitimate concern?
