How has the God of Mischief grown over a decade of sinister tricks and foiled plans and even the occasional death in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? The man who plays him, Tom Hiddleston, sat down with Rotten Tomatoes for a deep dive to talk through just that. From learning he got the role of Loki in the original ‘Thor’ (he auditioned to play the title character) and then stepping into his costume for the first time, all the way to the test screenings that ultimately saved his life after audiences reacted negatively to his ‘Dark World’ death scene, it’s been a wild journey. In this exclusive extended interview, Hiddleston reflects on Loki’s most important moments and his approach to the character (and how he has adapted that over the years), and reveals what kind of Loki we can expect in the new Disney+ miniseries that bears his name.

We don't just love Loki, we're sci-fi fans, and after watching decades of Star Trek and other sci-fi shows like Stargate, we know that there are countless ways of killing main characters without having them actually be dead. If a character isn't wearing a red shirt, they can always find away to kill them off without having them die permanently, wether it's finding a way to kill and revive the actual character or killing off an alternate version of that character. If there's an alternate universe, or time line, or any other sort of duplicate of the character, they're even more likely to die than someone in a red shirt.

@@Primalxbeast if a convenient Sci-Fi/Fantasy death loophole isn't gonna resurrect a beloved character, then the devoted Sci-Fi/Fantasy nerds will. 😆 I love Tom Hiddleston as an actor and really enjoy a lot of his other work outside the MCU, but I absolutely love him as Loki. He is Loki, I can't imagine anyone else in the role. He's given so much to the character & it wouldn't be the same without him. Despite his many deaths in the MCU, I don't think I'll ever be prepared for the final goodbye to his Loki (which will hopefully be a long way off yet 🤞🏻🙏🏻). 💚

Thank god people didn't buy that Loki would be dead and essentially made Marvel change it. How they could just get rid of him so easily after how popular he was in The Avengers is beyond me. In the series you can see how much he reviewed fan behavior and highlighted what we've loved about Loki. Right down to the hair flips, heh-hehs, and contrary attitude. And then he himself infused the character with the capacity to love, to enchant, and to win over. Avenger's Loki expressed love with straight-faced self-sacrifice. Series Loki is a Shakespearean tragedy of heartbreak and disorientation. In DND terms, his charisma stat is well over 20.

It’s a good point that Loki has probably always felt different, even before knowing he wasn’t Asgardian. If you don’t know why you feel this why, it can be quite frightening, especially if your family is pretending nothing’s wrong. And then finding out the truth at the 11th hour would certainly be traumatizing. Moral of the story, don’t lie to your kids. ;)
@misatchi
@misatchi 3 жыл бұрын
It's so crazy, I ended up reading the Kid Loki comics right after Avengers came out and understood that Loki was more than a villain and that in the comics, his last hurrah before he becomes Kid Loki is sacrificing himself to save Asgard. He was never just a villain, he is a true anti hero. He plays both sides and he loves his adopted family even if there is jealousy and pain in not being related by blood. Thor's never ending acceptance to bring him back if he is willing to fight alongside him is exactly what he needs. There are times in the comics when Thor himself acts villainous and plain rude to Loki. There is even a time when Loki becomes worthy of Mjolnir because of it but when the spell on Thor wears off he can no longer hold it and Thor has no memory of it so he tells him he is just lying as usual. It's so hard to watch his journey from Kid Loki to Agent of Asgard because there is SO MUCH self hate and a lot of the time, he is left to deal with these intense feelings alone. But he makes friends and he starts to reinvent himself and realize that he doesn't need to be held back by his mistakes. He can have an awful, painful past but the future is for him to decide. Loki is the one telling the story. And the Agent of Asgard comics end with Loki confronting the worst version of himself and what does he do? He walks over to him and he forgives him. He understands how things ended up that way and that even the most "evil" version of himself just wanted to prove he was worth something underneath it all. Loki has grown as a character in the comics just as he has grown on screen. It's crazy to reflect on everything that has happened from Thor 2011-now. There is something incredibly empowering to see Loki go through so much and still find a reason to try and learning to love yourself is HARD but to see someone as messy and broken as Loki do it is incredibly moving. It's important to tell your story and remember that it's never too late to start over. This is not the story of a villain or a God who has it all figured out. There is something incredibly human about Marvel's Loki. Loki is trying to do the best he can, just like the rest of us.

Loki has such an amazing range; playful, witty, charismatic, charming and fun. Tom may have been describing Loki but from what I can tell is those seem to be the characteristics of The Great Tom Hiddleston. I feel like the role of Loki could have been a semi minor role that may have dissipated through the evolution of the MCU but Tom made it something so much more!!! Loki the series is fantastic and I am so excited to see every episode!!! Tom and Sophia are fabulous together!

I always find it charming and endearing when an actor enjoys taking ownership of a long-running character as much as we enjoy watching them inhabit it. Actors seem to me to be artistic hobo's; making us love characters only to plop it on a shelf and grab a spot on the next train. Although I totally understand this professionally, when an actor holds on to a character and carries it along with them, it's extra special because here is a friend that I thought I would be forced to leave behind, and now I don't have to. There's a shared love of that friend. Actors like Tom with Loki, Anthony Daniels with C3-PO, Leonard Nimoy with Spock, etc, make deeply enjoying those characters "safe", because I know they won't let them simply fade away. Even if they're not actively playing those characters anymore, I want them to continue loving them as much as I do. They can hop any boxcar they like then, and I know our mutual friend is safely stowed in their pocket.

He's so perfect, he even pronounces mischievous correctly. Most people pronounce it mis-CHEE-vee-ous, not MIS-chi-vous.
@MargoB
@MargoB 2 жыл бұрын
I've always wondered where the "mis-CHEE-vee-uhs" pronunciation came from, especially because "mischief" doesn't include the "chee" sound. Perhaps because we see "...chiev..." and, using the phonetics we were taught, know we're to say "ee" when we see "ie"? Funny humans, we 😁.

Loki is a complex character, and when the chips are down, he can do the right thing sometimes, and he can show loyalty to the Asgardians or his brother Thor when they have a common enemy, such as in Ragnorak or Endgame. In his Loki series, he shows loyalty to Sophie, and some kind of friendship to Owen Wilsons' character towards the end of the Loki series. Fun to watch, as Loki is a lot of things.

kenneth branagh and tom hiddleston worked on wallander together in the early 2000s. i didn't know branagh directed thor, i'm guessing he had a sense that hiddleston would do well as loki and had something to do with him being brought on board.

its because the script and your (Tom Hiddleston) performance was far to memorable. People connected with Loki, they loved him, no one was ready to say goodbye to him yet. I remember even watching the movie when he got stabbed I was thinking "He Better NOT be dead!!". At the end I kept thinking, "They better show us what REALLY happened to Loki" and thank god they chose to alter the story to keep Loki in!! Come "Infinity War" I thought the exact same thing again! And thank goodness in "End Game" you see Loki grab the Tesseract, instantly telling us fans "Don't worry, Loki is ok" :-) Now I am enjoying the show, and I hope it stayes on for many seasons!! I think for many people including me, Loki is the favorite Marvel Character period! (At least since the MCU anyway) Also... if they DID kill Loki in Thor 2... He wouldn't have been in Ragnarok... can you imagine Ragnarok (one of the best films period) without loki!?

It's really interesting watching this interview after seeing the first two eps of "Loki." When Tom is talking about chaos and order at around the 18 minute mark, that's a central theme/element of the series, the philosophical drive behind Loki's actions. Loki embraces chaos, lives for chaos, but too much chaos spins out in to madness. as we've seen so far in the show. Tom's not spoiling here at all, he gives away no plot (but he is hinting directly at some of the show--Mobius and Loki discuss on screen the order/chaos stuff, and also talk about understanding people aren't truly good or truly bad, phrasing Tom uses at about 19:25). He's candidly talking about the thematic elements so beautifully. It makes me wonder if the series is going to also have Loki reflect on his relationships with his mother and brother, and maybe look at why his childhood was so traumatic (he's already started processing trauma when reading the report on the destruction of Asgard). That would explain why Owen Wilson went to "Loki school" to understand the psychological depths of the character. Why bother if you're not going to do a deep mental dive into it? Which so far the series is doing. At the end of the interview, when Tom talks about Loki being out of control, out of his comfort zone--it's all over the character and the series thus far. I think when he says "It's very confronting for [Loki]" to be in an uncomfortable situation, I think that's the thrust of the series. Tom Hiddleston is an absolute treasure. I wish him all the happiness and success his heart desires. He's a great actor, he has the sexiest voice, and he seems to have a compassionate, lovely personality. I bet he's a joy!

Let's face it: Tom Hiddleston is RDJ's successor as the center of the MCU. Or at least he should be. I think he would be too humble to describe himself as such, but there is no one left who has a greater screen presence. Sure you could argue a hero has to be at the center of a universe of superheroes, but Loki in his Series has appeared to have the capacity for genuine self-reflection and development. If it's true that Kang is the big bad in the series and will appear in Ant-Man and possibly other movies, then it would make for an interesting dynamic to have Loki at the center of the good guys trying to take down Kang. Will any of the Avengers forgive him for Coulson? If the series version of Loki ends up back in the present day with the TVA compromised and an uncertain future ahead as I suspect, and they need Loki to help defeat Kang, then the answer is they're going to have to try and work with him, forgiveness or not. Lots of interesting possibilities for the MCU if Tom Hiddleston is allowed to take on a major role in it.

If they have killed Loki in Dark World I would have been so livid with Marvel. Like seriously, that would have been such a wasted opportunity to throw away for a villain redemption that was just primed and ready and begging to happen. Most audiences don’t always buy villain redemption arcs but this was one of those rare cases where the fans we literally *screaming* for an arc. Killings Loki off in Dark World would have ruined a lot of the best parts of Ragnorok and Infinity War. I am so glad they decided to take more time and care with Loki’s story and give it the attention he deserved because I don’t think the fans would have accepted it any other way. There are *still* fans who refuse to accept his death. Can you imagine if they had kept it to Dark World? An unfinished and spur of the moment redemptive act that gets him killed before anything of substance could play out? Personally, I don’t think I would have watched anymore Marvel films after that if that’s their idea of engaging story telling. As it is, I still don’t think they properly addressed all the issues between Loki and Thor BUT maybe this will change with the tv series. I really truly can’t imagine a Thor movie without Loki would be worth the price of a theater ticket. 🗡🐍✨💚💛
