I was there in 2018 when the park was dedicated to him. His two daughters, granddaughter, his brother and his ex-wife were there. Saw all the beautiful murals too. There's a Tom Petty Birthday Bash that happens every year (except for 2020 and 2021 - thanks COVID!), so I've been there several times for that. Home to Bo Diddley too. Great town!

I found this very interesting. I've listened to Tom's music but I didn't know anything about his history. It's amazing that meeting Elvis changed Tom's life.

Tom Petty wow, I fell in love with him when I was about 7 or 8, my older brother was a fan of Tom & I was forced to listen to his music lol......I just thought it was so different & so relaxing.....I never stopped listening and when I found out he died I bawled because I wanted to meet him. Elvis became one of my favorites about 4 years ago, I started really listening to his music & reading about his life. I found out he was a number 8 like me & we're both a capricorn. Man, getting the small taste of the late 80's really changed my life for the best. Kids today unless they listen to these guys have no clue what music is. God bless! Happy birthday to your lady!

Lucky enough to have met him twice

I use to sit on a friend's Grandmother's front porch, listen to Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers play Orlando Arena, Orlando, FL. Yeah, it may have been loud, but the sound was above par and smooth. She got to the point she'd call, 'Hey! Tom & Co. are playing this weekend, you coming?' We never went to live shows, why pay, when you could sit for free and her Mom brought us soda 😉They played there all the time in the 1970s. Image our surprise when they said they weren't 'famous' until the 1980s!?! They played all over the world by 1976 even!!! Thank you for sharing this with us all. Good memories indeed. ❤💯

i saw Tom Petty in concert and it’s my all time favorite concert. he was in town the summer before he passed and i wasn’t able to go. i was gonna catch the next one, but that never happened.

Looking at the big sink hole I think I can figure out where they got the name Mudcructch because when someone fell down that hill they were covered with mud and need crutches. I also was going to comment that when you went to the place where they went to practice, I saw a big white sign behind the stop sign and I thought it read: The Taxes, I thought why would anyone name a place that??? And then I saw it said the Lakes when I got a closer look. Thanks for taking me to Tom Petty's hometown, he is one of my fave singers growing up in the 80's. There will never be another guy like him.

I’m from Gainesville, born and raised. His mom was the anesthesiologist who helped care for my mom on a few surgeries and my mom thought the world of her. I know all the places you are showing and it brought back memories from over the years. Met him once there-not gonna lie he wasn’t personable at all. Oh well-can’t win them all! Funny seeing Gainesville a high School. That’s where my sister graduated from. I will say that the area that GHS is in didn’t look anything like that when he was in high school. There was the Gainesville Mall right down the road (there was a Woolworth in there and my dad was the manager at the time Tom was in high school). Thanks for showing Devils Millhopper-my goodness I haven’t been there in forever! It has changed so much yet still looks the same as well. Thanks for a walk down memory lane.

I can confirm - that house on 13th and 9th with the orange/blue shutters IS in fact an old residence of Tom Petty. While at UF, a friend of mine lived there between 1998-2000. A lot of parties. I specifically remember puking in the bushes wondering if Tom Petty had ever done the same.

I also went to GHS in the 80's. I seen's Tom Petty's picture in the 1968 yearbook. I think he dropped out second semester of his senior year. My dad knew Tom's Dad , Earl, as he would build stuff for him. Today, my folks live in the subdivision next door to the Devil's Millhopper called Ashton. Last time I was at DM, the trails weren't paved. Also, in the real rainy season, you can't get down the steps, the sinkhole will flood as it rains in Gainesville almost everyday during the summer.

If you ever go back through Gainesville, be sure to check out Satchel's Pizza and there are also two other murals, one at Heartwood Studio of TP and then there is a section for him on the 34th Street Wall that also includes the victims of the Gainesville murders. From my research back in 2017, I had pinpointed in my guesses that Mudcrutch Farm was located at 2203 NW 45th Avenue, which is close to your guess too! Thanks for the video!

Depot Street! Really great original Mudcrutch song, that Tom & Heartbreakers never did record, and I'll never know why. It would have been a hit for any band. I learned of Tom last year. Broke my heart. Then discovered all his music. His really old Mudcrutch stuff had some real gems in there.

I loved the Youre gonna Get it album even more. I think the last album I bought was Long After Dark. I was not as much into his later stuff. Nice to see his child and teenage hood. I knew he was from Gainesville from many article I read back in the 80s.
