Tom Waits Interviews from "The Beauty of The Mysterious," a Robert Wilson ARTE Documentary
Watch the full video: • Robert Wilson ARTE Doc...
Tom Waits sat down for a rare interview to talk about the stage director Robert Wilson in the recent French/German ARTE documentary; "The Beauty of the Mysterious".
Waits has collaborated with Wilson in three theatre plays; The Black Rider (1990), Alice (1992) and Woyzeck (2000). This interview is a retrospective on that collaboration.
Waits wrote the music for these plays and later featured some of the music in arrangements recorded for the studio albums; The Black Rider (1993) (from the play of the same name), Alice (2002) (from the play of the same name) and Blood Money (2002) (from the play Woyzeck).
About "The Beauty of The Mysterious":
"We look back at more than half a century of mysterious artistic creation while trying to crack a unique artistic code. Why are people moved to tears when Robert “Bob” Wilson puts minimalistic petrol pumps into a production of Shakespeare’s sonnets? Why does merciless repetition change our understanding of something? Together with Tom Waits, Willem Dafoe or Marina Abramović we trace back our own experience of Bob’s art. Is it true what Philipp Glass the collaborator of the milestone piece “Einstein on the Beach” laughingly and with apparent pleasure exclaims “what does it mean? It doesn’t mean anything!”?"

Tom Waits is such a cult of personality, will always love his music and art. One of the first songs I ever heard by him was "Anywhere I lay my head" off of the Rain Dogs album, and his singing was so wild and insane I thought for sure it was supposed to be a joke and it hooked me to listen to the whole CD. to this day it is still one of my favorite albums out there

I listen to Tom daily, have since I first heard Pasties when Small Change came out - I was 12 at the time and in Cleveland we had a great radio station WWWM M105 which was well known for playing music the mainstream channels wouldn't or couldn't play (If 6 was a 9 comes to mind also from that era and channel). So I begged my mother to take me to the record store so I could buy Small Change with money I was saving in of course my piggy bank. I still have that album today and cherish it. Tom plays Zachariah in Seven Psychopaths and just kills it. You just have to watch him in the "Fishing with John" video too! A brilliant engineer of entertainment Tom is. Whenever Tom's name comes up I just can't help but wonder, "What's he building in there?"

Merci beaucoup! "You're innocent when you dream" Why doesn't Tom move next door to me?! Nothing like this astonishing show ever comes to the boring place I am stuck in- why don't I move- well check out the lyrics to "I Don't Wanna Grow Up"- that sort of jazz. I was reminded of Amanda Palmer in her Dresden Doll days and of when she played a living statue, a bride handing out flowers to make some "bread". At my age I decided to retrieve an old wedding dress from the attic- a thrift shop purchase because I had this Waits-ian idea for the curtains around an as yet unpurchased canopy bed- yeah I get some of those scathing brilliant ideas too but my partner isn't tolerant like Kathleen so I figured well Iive a block from a park. I"ll get some kabuki make-up, a long white wig and make a box and add some Victorian touches to the dress and steal some flowers and ta da! scare the kids as Dickens' Miss Haversham.... Love you Tom. Spent the morning playing Mule Variations...Falsetto! You can call me anytime collect! Namaste from Ontario, Canada

I remember finding this cassette of "the Black Rider"... wondering if this was a real theatrical event. Sometimes living in the US is awful isolating. You wouldn't see a clip of this here. That's the sad part. But there IS a lot of space. A lot of blank pages to fill up with something. If you can tend to it, maybe it won't be an ugly thing. I've never seen high art in a strip mall... well, not intentionally. The line Tom just said, whether intentional or not. Saying it takes a lot out of you "you lose a lot of hair! But you know, it has to be made from SOMETHING!" I'm assuming hair. Thanks for that.

I’m not American and I’ve been a declared fan of his for about 3 decades, so I don’t know if I’m in a position to say anything, but I still will, of course. Any country has weaknesses and strengths. One of the American weaknesses is the fear of opinions, often labelled “political”, as if that was a bad thing. It seems present even in this thread. I want to cancel the cancellers. This type of people probably are so limited they don’t understand that Tom Waits is so much more than funny and weird, so they haven’t discovered they must hate him. But America also has so much more than limiting naysayers. There is room for so many good thoughts and new ideas. If anyone can dream up a topic, there’s probably a whole scene devoted to it somewhere in the US. People deeply interested and willing to go all the way to really understand. This multitude is a wonderful strength of America. Not the only one, but one I love. think this is how Tom succeeded, helped by the people smart enough to be curious and to see i diamond in the raw. I live in Amsterdam, where there’s some of that same multitude. On that note, I see this quality being under attack all over the world, perhaps even more in the US than here. A certain ex president is spreading the poison of lies and intolerance. Selfishness is presented as not shameful anymore. Well, it is shameful! That’s one of many images one might read out of Tom Waits’ music.
