This was TOM WAITS's first ever appearance on the LETTERMAN show.the first of at least ten appeances.I like the fact that both he and DAVE have a mutual friendship.

I'm SO glad Worldwide Pants, or whomever, is releasing this tranche of high quality videos. This particular one has resonance as I saw its original airing and I'd thought I'd misheard him say he was born in a cab in Valparaiso, Indiana. I've been looking for this clip for over almost forty years! Tom has quite the sense of humor: there are no cabs in Valpo ha ha.

Swordfish Trombone was the album Letterman is holding up. This would be a whole new sound for Waits , and it would be followed by Rain Dogs and Frank's Wild 'Year, two of my favorite 80's albums.

@@colinwilliams553 This is just my perception - it seems Waits learned a few things, holds an instrument, can sit at a piano and noodle. He has his act, nothing wrong with that. See the Black and White Roy Orbison show, for example. His voice sounds to me like a white guy performing in a minstrel show. Just my $2. (Inflation).
