Script:
Hi guys, in this video I wanted to show you guys how and why I did my last short film titled “Legend Of the Bar”. First let me tell you why i did this film. It was very simple. I was on vacation in Ecuador. I travel there often and always wanted to a bigger project there. I also met a filmmaker there, his name is Danny Ruan… and I wanted to see how good he is and if we like working together before we commit to work on something bigger. So I took an old feature film script I had written years ago and took one of the scenes from that script and turned it into a short film by adding a sort of a quick beginning and ending. This way we had a story we could tell. I asked Danny to be the cinematographer. Also asked if he could help me get the locations. He right away told me that there is this cool desert he likes shooting, so I rewrote my script to take place in a desert because originally it was in a forest.
And that’s the first tip I’ll tell you. If you are starting out and want to get your first paying job or make contacts in the industry the best thing you can do is to stop making excuses as to why you can’t make it as a filmmaker. Instead of complaining come up with your own film and shoot it. Take a look at what is available to you and use it in your film. If you live on a farm then set the film’s story to be on a farm. If you have a motorcycle then use that in your film. This way you’ll make sure that you complete the film and also you’ll learn and get better with each little film you do like this until you get so good that other talented people in the industry will recognize your talent. Also if you’re already working in the film industry and you think you’re mister big shot. I would still suggest that whenever you have some free time in between projects, use it to do little test films to collaborate with other people or to get even better at your craft.
Danny also helped get the actors for the film and the crew. So right away I was not only impressed with his talent as a cinematographer but also how resourceful he was despite that we had zero budget.

Love what you have to say here, and it is very very true. To resonate with what you've already explained Tom and share with readers from my perspective, working on your first short film (even as minimal as a run/gun gorilla docu) will help understanding the fundamental core of any film making which is *production* (mentally can divided into pre/live/wrap/post) and understanding what goes into each of these stages is dependent on time vs resource ($ is a resource too but not always available, so learn to be "resourceful" !) which are allocated for each stage of film production. Understanding how each of these stages fit together is something you have to really do yourself or have your hands deeply involved in (don't be afraid to learn to take on a new roll/study it!) will help on a micro to macro scale; to me, learning to be highly resourceful and learning who you work best with is paramount! Of course in the end, all pieces of the pie are necessary to understand. I encourage anyone involved in film making/getting into it to learn to at least be versed or have a hands on understanding of EVERY position/roll, because on set, every roll is vital, and if you aren't able to understand that, you'll miss the small yet vital details on a larger set that can drastically effect the end production. (PAs not being on top of crafty or not having enough to cover it, resulting in very hangry talent who are not performing at their best comes to mind). To end, NEVER let your head get big, the quite guy next to you or the eccentric over talker may know more and be more skilled than you could have imagined and you'd do well to continue to learn from them and life around you

This is great! My thoughts exactly. It is easy to postpone (making) because of not having access to money for your BIG project, but short projects are a great way to practice your skills and accumulate work you can use as a resume or to even send to film festivals.

Thank you for sharing this, Tom! :D I currently have a 600D and a couple of lenses and I'm thinking of making short films to cut my teeth before I buy a better camera - I was thinking between the GH4 and the a6500 or the GH5 and the a7iii (of course, that may change by the time I actually upgrade) - but was wondering what your thoughts are on these different systems (or any other recommendations) for narrative filmmaking (meaning short films) :D Keep up the awesome work!

Awesome. Tom, had a question. How do they record audio of so many characters at the same time ? I read somewhere the audio is always recorded in the studio later after the scenes. But howcome they match so accurate ? One human being can never be exactly speaking at the same tempo the second time.
@TomAntos
@TomAntos 6 жыл бұрын
Soumendra Jena usually on a bigger film each actor has their own lavalier microphone plus there will be multiple shotgun mics. Dialog is sometimes also recorded later on in studio but that's only if it was impossible to get good audio during production because like you said it's never gonna sound the same.

Hi Tom, been watching your channel for a couple of years. I've learned a lot from you. Thank you. I need advice. I'm a photographer and want to shoot my first feature film in 2018. I currently have a Nikon D610 and Nikkor AIS lenses (28mm f2.8, 50mm f1.4, 85mm f2, 105mm f2.5). I want to invest into camera that shoot 4k. The cameras I was looking at was Nikon D850 which would be great for photography but I don't know about using it for a feature. I was thinking about the GH5 but then I would have to worry about buying new lenses and the crop factor. I would love the Ursa mini pro but I only have a $4000 budget for camera. I respect your opinion of you were in my shoes.
