OOOOOH my gosh...two videos in and I'm hooked!!! Kaye you had me leaning in to my laptop, like I was going to be able to smell that sauce! Watching you taste those tomatoes... sitting there back-dropped by the plants holding that perfect tray with your stray hair falling, seeing your expressions go through the changes was powerful.. about as captivating as this stuff gets...I made all the right sounds at the right time; just wow! That was exceptional. 🍅 ✍️)))

It was great to see the tomatoes growing through the season Kaye, and actually quite reassuring to see the harvest you ended up with in spite of the blight (my outdoor tomatoes were completely wiped out). And as for the bloopers at the end - I can completely relate! Take care x

I'm 80 now and started my flowers and veggies from seed 50 years ago. Used vermiculite in half gallon milk cartons cut lengthwise so they were about 2 inches deep to sprout only. Then I plucked the sprouts easily from the verm. and planted them in any container that held my good garden soil about 4 inches deep that i baked in cooky sheets to kill weed seeds and blended with vermiculite and watered with a dilute solution of Miracle grow. I used the heat provided by our TV, which was always on, (we had 5 kids) and the top surface held 4 or 5 milk carton halves which had saran wrap on top and a magazine for darkness. Checked daily for germination cuz w/o light they'd get leggy real fast. I had 2 grow lights in the basement for the next step. I kept the lights really close to the plants and they plants were never leggy but rather squatty and thick stemmed. Northeast Montana is cold country and nights even in summer rarely get above 60 even tho the days can reach 80s and 90s. Pop and beer cardboard flats lined with plastic made good plant trays and the price was right. Hubby did cobble together a leanto greehouse on southside of the unused garage with the old storm windows when we got new windows on the farmhouse his folks had built. Used a propane heater in it when the nites were frosty. Set the plants out in June that were started in March. All this to encourage you to use what u have and have don't give up on having a garden.

My husband rolls his eyes when he hears the whistling introduction to your videos. I re-watch them so many times! I have tried or plan to try many of the varieties of tomato (and peppers) you've grown. I love your garden and would love to see the layout to see how I might maximize my space. I feel like a groupie, but I do love all the love you put into your videos (and your garden)!

Oh, thank you so much! Tell your hubs I deliberated long and hard about my theme music, as when I started there were only a handful of actual web shows to look at. I wanted it to be homey and personal, and I remembered Andy Griffith and the whistle. I hope he can learn to love it. :) I really appreciate your support! I will think about showing my layout now that beds are emptying, you can see it a lot better. Though I do not have enough walk space. 18" is not enough. :)

Challenges this summer? Everything! LOL! Every year's a challenge! Overall, it was a great year! Spring crops did great & I have potatoes & onions to last thru the winter. Summer stuff did, and is doing well. About the only thing that was a bit of a disappointment were the "sweetie" cherry tomatoes like you grew. They didn't do nearly as well as the Japanese cherries I usually grow. Maybe it was just the weather!???? All the peppers were insane, and still going strong. Bags & bags in the freezer. And now the "bad-boys" (Ghost, Trinidad Scorpion & 7 Pot Douglahs )are ripening up! Then I've got sweet potatoes, long onions, spinach, carrots & lettuce that'll be coming in Dec./Jan.! So, yeah…Great year! Italy???? Wow! You're the world traveler as well! Sounds cool!
@Latebloomershow
@Latebloomershow 7 жыл бұрын
Yep, the Italy trip was 3-fold purpose. You'll hear about it. What do you do with those hot peppers? I don't grow anything hotter than CRH and still I don't know what to do with them. Your operation is going full-strong year-round, too! I'm taking this winter off. I have to let this disc in my back heal. Been bothering me since, IDK, March or April, and harvesting those cherry toms really made it worse. Take care and thanks for the support!

Try crushing up 4-5 "Tums" or "Rolaids" and add them to the bottom of your planting hole when you first plant your tomatoes. The added Calcium/Magnesium helps prevent the blossom end rot.

Super💓 Awesome 👍 Thank U very much for growing our neglected wild cherry tomato. The technic of harvesting this tomato is , wait 'till all fruits from a cluster are all ripe 🍅 then cut the whole cluster. Thank you very much again miss Kaye for this video , I feel so honored😗😗😗😙😙💛💙💜💚❤ CHICKEN TIGHTS WITH BUTINGGAN (Bootinggun)SAUCE:( any var.can do) 4 pcs. Chicken tights (opt.) 500g Butiggan (Bootinggun) tomato(it depends on u how much you like) 3 cloves garlic mince or crushed 1 big onion sliced or diced Salt or fish sauce Pinch of black pepper PROCEDURE: Marinate the chicken only with salt for 20-30 min. Then fry them until golden brown. Remove the the fried chicken from oil. Saute garlic 'till a little bit brownish in color Then put the onion @nd pepper. If the onion starts to smell good, then you can put the butinggan tomatoes. Cook for 5 min. Then put tbe sauteed ingredients in a blender. Put the pureed ingredients back into the pan together with the fried chicken tights. Then put the salt or fish sauce for the taste and simmer for 10 mins.

I have a feeling you may have bought tomato plants in a nursery that are determinate. Most tomato seeds you buy, including all heirloom seeds I think, are indeterminate, which never stop growing. Determinate stop about 3-4' high, set all their tomatoes at once and are done. After trying that the first year, I went to indeterminate. Let me know what you plant this year. If you buy nursery plants make sure they tell you which one you are buying.

Great stuff Kaye. I know what it`s like to deal with disease problems. I live in Sacramento and I planted on March 25 and had a great initital harvest but fusarium wilt eventually killed off all my tomatoes. Planted a mix of heirlooms and hybrids. Next summer I have to solarize my garden to rid the soil of disease. Gardening can be a real battle sometime, can`t it? Keep up the good work.

Oh, FW is devastating, I'm so sorry! I really hope I don't get that one. I'm thinking about solarizing, too. Can you let me know how you are going to do it? Black plastic? YES, a real battle, but the process is so engaging and rewarding on other levels, I can't stop. I really appreciate the support. Thank you! Please share and help me make Late Bloomer sustainable this year. Thanks!

I`m going to be using the UC IPM method detailed here. They use clear plastic to get the soil temps nice and hot. Being in Sac heat in the summer will be a real bonus to help kill the pathogens. Hopefully it will also kill the damping off fungus that just killed off half of my cauliflower!! Cheers. ipm.ucanr.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn74145.html

I had the same problems with my tomatoes this year. Mine ended up dying of end rot and blight. I only got a very small harvest. So disappointed. Trying to figure out if something's wrong with my garden bed or my watering cycle. Going to mix in some new soil and compost during the winter. I hope that will fix my problem. Hopping to have better run next year. You had so many tomatoes!! Congrats! Who do you give your tomatoes to. I have a overload of cucumbers. Thanks for the great video ❤️

I gave the surplus to my once a week housekeeper and once a week garden man, Eric. Thanks so much!! Yeah, it's so disappointing. I got NOTHING from my ground cherries which I started from seed shared by Sue Ann on my To Parts East road trip. I'd like to try solarizing my beds. Here's a link someone sent me: ipm.ucanr.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn74145.html Lot of work with no sure results, but maybe worth it. I've had worst summer yet with bugs and mildew. For the first time, my peppers have been consumed by something. I've sprayed and sprayed. Maybe it's spider mites, IDK, or the mites that you can't even see. Very frustrating. Hang in there!

Hi Kaye, I am going through some medical issues and stroll trying to keep up with business and family commitments so I am trying to find the energy and enthusiasm for make sauces from this years crop. I needed this type of inspiration. Do you ever freeze you tomatoes and/or ripen off green ones at end of season? I have found a banana with the green tomatoes in a paper bag works really well and really fast for the latter. My favourite large tomato is Cherokee Purple. Have you tried it? It is meaty and delicious. Also something called Juliet Roma Hybrid is an an easy and realizable small Roma. All the best Desmond
@Latebloomershow
@Latebloomershow 7 жыл бұрын
The Berkley Tie-Dye is a close variety to Cherokee Purple in taste. Yes, they are amazing, too. Have not tried growing them from seed, though, and the Juliet I have not tried. I will be looking for disease-resistant varieties next year. The powdery mildew is just too discouraging where I am. I'm glad I inspired you!!! Thanks for watching. As I had to make this quick TN trip for my mother's birthday today, I have not had time to edit my Italy footage, but look forward to my vlogs from Sicily coming soon!

I wish to have success like this with my tomatoes. I haven't had a lot of issue with disease. Some of the things I've tried are companion planting, basil, parsley, garlic. Trimming off any leaves when they first start getting funky or buggy, and making sure to trim off any growth below 12 in. Also, spacing, allow for plenty of air flow.
@Latebloomershow
@Latebloomershow 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, all these are perfect measures. But, for me, and this tiny micro farm, I've found it nearly impossible to now crowd tomatoes, either I plant more than I can manage, or I fail to keep the suckers pruned, or both. And I'm saddled with a climate that encourages mildew. So frustrating, but I still do it! If you would like to purchase my DVD of this series as a gift or just to have for yourself to watch on your TV, all proceeds go to help produce "Late Bloomer." Also, try grafting your tomatoes, or buy them grafted, onto Maxifort root stock. The Maxifort root stock adds a lot of disease resistance to plants, improves vigor and yield. Johnny's and K-State university have excellent videos on grafting if you're not familiar with the process.

At the Farm, we grew a whole line of the "Indigo" tomatoes....blueberry, apple, et cetera....customers were split about 50/50 as to liking the flavor. Universally, though, when comparing the indigo tomatoes to different cherry tomatoes, folks preferred the non-indigo cherry tomatoes. We will not grow the blueberry again.

My Season 4 Growing Heirloom Tomatoes talks a bit about strategies, but was just told today in a comment that Trichoderma added when planting can strengthen roots. Overcrowding and watering from above will definitely increase odds of getting PM. I have not conquered PM, it's my greatest challenge, so I think I will try the trichoderma and see how that helps. Also, if you have been following my channel, you saw that I added wood chips to my garden this year. I'm hoping that gives me better results as well. Thanks for watching! Hope you subscribed.

Hi Kaye, Farmer Bob here. Down in Zone 10, Vero Beach, SoFlo, all our summer tomatoes are a fail: Heatmasters, Phoenix, FL 91s, Cherries, all. Nothing "will set fruit below 70." Oh, wow, Bob! I know FL is VERY challenging! My old neighbor (you can see him occasionally in my earliest videos in Season 1) used to tell me his dad had a garden when he was growing up in FL, but I really don't remember well what they grew. And climate is more erratic and hot now. I'm going to try to locate a FL gardener who sent me Seminole squash seeds last year. In fact, I could send them to you, since they were climatized for FL. I didn't have luck with them here. I haven't heard from him in a year, so.... be patient. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy my videos!

One pot wouldn't be so much space. Some people do manage to grow small cherry tomato plants indoors. It's never a waste of time to try to grow edible plants. You learn so much, and it's so engaging, hopeful and grounding. But, do you have a balcony? If so a good, tall 10-15 gallon pot is best. Tomatoes need heat. I would have to research it before giving more advice. Thanks for watching!! That's awesome you are growing herbs. Don't forget you can grow micro-greens indoors all year long!
