Growing Up Without Borders

Күн бұрын

Today we are taking you on a tour around one of the biggest ancient cities on Earth - Angkor Wat, Cambodia.
Lying just minutes outside Siem Reap, this ancient megalopolis used to be the size of modern-day Los Angeles. Another fan fact that not many people know about Angkor Wat is that Angelina Jolie filmed Tomb Raider right here in this temple.
At arrival, we headed for the ticket office. They offered two types of tickets 1-day pass and a 3-day pass. One thing to have in mind when visiting Angkor Wat as a couple or group - you all have to show up and have your pictures taken individually. On the plus side, kids under 12 can enter for free.
Lined with temples, narrow corridors, and massive towers, Angkor left such a strong impression on all of us. We absolutely loved every second of walking down history lane. Built in the 12th century and spreading across 400 acres, the entire Angkor Wat complex was impossible to explore in one day.
All that walking under the hot Cambodian sun also called for refreshment, so we decided to grab some food and cold drinks right outside the main Angkor temple.
Our next stop was the Phnom Bakheng. To reach this holy spot, we had to climb up the mountain. There was an option to take a ride, but we wanted to hike instead.
Good thing we started early because it was already getting crowded. The reason we wanted to get there on time was to witness a breathtaking sunset from the top of the Phnom Bakheng temple. And we weren’t disappointed!
The next morning, we had to rise up early before the sun was out. Why? Well, Angkor Wat is also famous for having the best sunrise views, and we wouldn’t miss that for anything.
Even though we headed out early, there were already plenty of people waiting for the sun to illuminate the day.
After such a blissful morning, we went back to our hotel for a delicious breakfast and then headed back out to do some more exploring around the Angkor Wat complex.
.
This time, we decided to visit the Ta Prohm temple, ad oh boy, were we in for a pleasant surprise! We took some of the coolest shots ever! This is also where the movie Tomb Raider Lara Croft was filmed with Angelina Jolie!
Next was the Ta Keo temple and its super steep, massive steps. It made us wonder if people in the past were a lot taller. What do you think?
And the last stop of the day was the Bayon temple, famous for the over 200 faces carved out of stone.
Back at the hotel, we jumped into the pool to relax and refresh after the long day, and then it was time for dinner.
We decided to do it like locals do and grab some food by the river. Funny enough, we experienced something called social proof, getting all the tourists to sit with us in the same little food place.
We finished the night with delicious ice cream, and then we were off to bed!

Cambodia is a beautiful country with rich cultural heritage. I am Indian and fortunate enough to visit the Angkor Wat and other temples during 2018. Being indian and Hindu I could easily connect to the magnificent structures.

I have a long fascination with the history of the Hindu religion and why there’s a big temple in Cambodia. The Khmer language is in Sanskrit, which is an ancient language. From what I understand, there was once an Indian Prince who met a Naga Princess. He noticed that all of the Naga warriors were females and instead of fighting them, he asked to marry the Princess and through their Union birthed the Khmer people. It puzzles me because the Nagas in the carvings are depicted as half serpent and half human female upper body, similarly like mermaids. And also why gold are so adorned throughout the temples.

@@mikewhocheeseharry5292 Naga are said to be half human half snake race of being they can shape shift according to Hindu legends. Patanjali who wrote yoga sutra was a Naga. They come from Nagalokha its is in one of the 14 relms (7 upper 7 under) of existence. We humans live in the 7th lokha the lowest of upper relms, while Nagas lives in one of the worlds in the 8th lokha.

Wonderfully well educated young Ladies, all showing respect around temples. I was awe-struck by it's history in 2018, needed two full days and still realised later I hadn't explored it all. Looking at the stone work quality, this was a highly skilled, intelligent culture of hard working engineers and craftsmen. Mesmerizing again for me watching this video. Thankyou.

You have to explore all the Khmer temples in Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, and the Malay peninsula to get a whole broader understanding of the complexity and engineering of the Khmer empire. Angkor the capital is just the tip of the iceberg.

The waterfalls in Phnom Kulen is part of a mega city of the khmer empire called Mahendraparvata. There are ancient temples and a massive pyramid there but its hard to get to due to no roads and dense jungle. The Khmers back then had to cut stones and engineered the mountain landscape just to build a city there. Amazing stuff.

Thank for making these amazing videos in Cambodia (for some reasons, I've been following you guys for a while now :) (even for local, touring Angkor Wat is tiring but im glad you could make the most of it) and I love how you mentioned the social momentum in the video (I learned that when the first and second people initiate the clapping then the rest after the fourth and fifth will clap too). And (*just in case) if you ever wonder why almost all the stairs that lead to critical points of the building are so steep, because, in fact, they are NOT designed to walk on(especially for ordinary citizens or daily activities)...Technically, all of the temples aren't designed for people (not even for the king or queen). Nobody lives there except the Gods of believers. King and Queen usually live in wooden palace. Once in a while, they would come to do some offerings or ritual events with citizens then back home. And why the window is so small, well, because it isn't a window either. Perhaps, you might have noticed some doors or windows were carved for aesthetic and representing purpose but not the actual purpose of windows (which to introduce light itself). In the ancient period, statues are put and locked in dark, the Angkor Wat where you stand is peacefully quiet and inaccessible to climb to its core by many....just like what you could have imagined how heavens feel like and this concept is also applied to the steep stairs as well....(*Note: these are what my professor have told me in my school, so yeah it is important to find concrete proof for applied usage about this steep stairs and window but for most cases, you can absolutely take this as a general perception about Angkor Wat) hope you have a wonderful time in Cambodia and beyond.!!...really want to travel the world someday (*not as many as you guys did hahaha.... but yeah that IS what adventurous people love to do, isn't it.!) ;) ~David

I agree all these structures were not meant to be climbed by the general public. These places are used to be worshipping and ceremonial purposes only. I don’t how true it is but I heard the reason the stairs are small because when the priests or anyone climbs up theirs toes will not be pointed directly to the sacred place. To me that theory makes sense since all these structures are meant to be worshiping only.

You should add Beng Melea, Koh Ker, and the Preah Vihear temples also. They are remains and examples of how just wealthy and powerful the Khmer empire truly was back in those days.

Wow! It was so much to see and take in. It would have probably been better to have a tour guide to explain all these details to us.

@@GrowingUpWithoutBorders yes the temples of Angkor are just the tip of the iceberg of the whole Khmer Empire. You can literally see thousands of khmer temples in what is now Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Malay peninsula.
