I had always wondered what Lara's doppelganger did after the end of Underworld's DLC. Like, she was a free person now. Nothing stopped her from just living life

I still want to see AOD recreated with all the original ideas that were supposed to be in the game

I would really like to see the return of kurtis, Von Croy, and Sophia. I have a theory they could say or write in that the Von croy that died in AOD was another shape shifter.

Kurtis absolutely needs to make a return to the series! AOD is my favorite installation in the Tomb Raider series and I’d love nothing more than to see the entire AOD story flushed out.

For TR Underworld they were initially planning three atlantean levels. It seems to me that they were considering making more connections between Anniversary and Underworld.

There was also that Roanoke plot line that was hinted at the end of the reboot, but it was never followed up in Rise. That unknown golden statue in her trophy room was never explained in game. Also Gunderson survived AOD but I guess he wasn't really all that important. Quite strangely enough there is a funny connection between LAU and the reboot that no one seems to care: Sam Nishimura has a rich uncle that funds her expedition to Yamatai. Could that rich uncle be Toru Nishimura from Tomb Raider Legend?

The divine source being an Atlantean artifact is so cool! Never noticed that before. And also the fact that Lara has 2 Excaliburs lol. Thanks for making this video, I really enjoyed it!

Well done, this was just what I needed. Let us now anticipate what plot timeline will the Netflix anime explore, how will it relate with Amazon's series, and where the next game will fit into all of these stories. Personally, I just want the latex top, shorts, braid, dual pistols and red glasses Lara to make a freaking iconic entry in an epic intro scene in at least one of these upcoming projects. ❤ cheers!

this episode is a true masterpiece!!

One interesting thing about Tihocan's survival and possible further adventures is how he could easily be the inspiration for numerous monster-slaying heroes throughout mythology, especially given Natla's story of creating said monsters. Heracles versus various supernatural creatures, all said to be the children of Echidna. Adam versus Lilith. Perseus versus Medusa ("Queen") and the sea-monster sent after Andromeda. Nimrod the mighty hunter. Samson versus the lion he strangled. Beowulf versus Grendel, Grendel's mother, and the dragon. Thor versus Jormungandr, Odin versus Fenrir, both monsters being the brothers of the goddess Hel. The other interesting thing the "Legend" series created was the symbol/rune for the Atlantean Pyramid: the diamond-shaped omega with the central shaft and volcanic chamber. It implies that the "pyramid" has an underground component that was built INTO the volcanic island Atlantis was founded upon, and that it generates energy thermovoltaically (heat into electricity). Then there's the relationship between Natla Technologies and Amanda Evert and James Rutland, as implied by the crates that may have originally been an Easter egg. James William Rutland, Junior, was a definite parody of George W. Bush, especially his mundane military service and ties to America's military industrial complex; was Natla Technologies a part of it? And Amanda Evert was a unlockable skin for replaying the game, besides already functioning as Lara's evil, and American, counterpart; how did she know that the "Wraith Stone" would deactivate the monster killing her fellow students at Paraiso? And how did Amanda take control of Natla Technologies in "Underworld" if Natla was confirmed to be alive since "Anniversary"? The one problem with combining the Classic and Legend timelines is Lara's past; her parents are definitely alive in Classic, and are definitely dead in Legend. Amanda could be the key to there being two timelines. The timeloop created by the simultaneous "sword in the stones" in Legend could have caused the engine fire that crashed the plane in the Himalayas. But in the Classic series, student Lara could have decided not to go to Paraiso with Amanda, who was an obvious weirdo obsessed with mysticism, and never triggers the Legend timeloop, preventing her parents from dying. Lara may be carrying on the tradition of the British Museum in artefact pillaging for (as Indiana Jones put it) fortune and glory, but at least she doesn't believe she has some paranormal destiny like Amanda.

Trinity could also be an offshoot of the Cabal who had infiltrated the church, much like the Lux Veritatis were an offshoot of the Templars, staying around even long after the order was shut down, like how Sailor Moon’s manga & anime series actually being a spin-off of an older manga about Sailor Venus & Artemis called Codename: Sailor V which ended up overshadowing the original. Maybe Trinity included Joachim “Shapeshifter” Karel among its ranks and they were responsible for tricking Vasiley into redirecting bombers to Castle Kreigler. Karel could also have been using Trinity/Cabal members in the Nazi party to uncover Natla’s pyramid, explaining the Indiana Jones version changes to Natla’s Mines in-game. This ties into what he says to Lara disguised as Bouchard: that the Cabal were active during the war. 20 Years of Tomb Raider also says that Murti planned to make Nephillim & Atlanteans the same species and TR1/TRAE Natla was going to return as would be revealed in the third AOD game, Dreams of Resurrection. Either the Nazis were unable to reach the pyramid or if they did, Karel realised using its machines to breed Nephillim back like Natla first tried (prior to the comet strike & Nea Kameni erupting to destroy the city) would be useless without the scion and he didn’t know where the 2 of the original three 3 elders had hidden it. (Perhaps Qualopec in his tomb was a sleeper as of TRAE or the skeleton on his throne was a decoy?) Maybe once Natla was out, she learned about the scion locations from other Nephillim in Cappadocia. Maybe her plan of forcing humans to evolve via natural selection was her part in trying to create more suitable, stronger humans for Eckhardt’s Nephuman conversion experiments.

I'd say the probability of seeing Qualopec again would increase the moment Tihocan appeared. But yeah it's the sad expectation of mine that if anything from that story appears again, it'd be based on Anniversary and not TR1. As for Legend time travel, I'm very painfully aware of this and I kinda just... ignore it. For now. I mean, that's a huge revelation that the story itself decides to ignore as well, it's never mentioned or referenced again. It's like they wanted that cool moment of revelation but didn't want to wade through the mud of complications that time travel brings into a story. If I ever used it in a fic (it's possible, I do have one LAU fic), I'll probably leave it in a videochat form. That is, you can communicate with somone from another time, but you can't *physically* travel through time. It's still messy with possibilities but at least the possibilities are a bit restricted. As for two Excaliburs, I'm also very aware of that and I do very much plan to reference it in that fanfic. Not as Lara dual wielding them, but rather maybe Lara... letting a friend/enemy/frienemy evetually have one, as that person is also quite interested in the dais (no need to name names, eh?). I still think that they might take some things that are from real myths and stories and do something completely different with them, as to not be constrained by previous TR plots. Basically how Seth is in ToO with zero connection to TR4. Maybe Lara finds the Spear of Destiny but the circumstances have nothing to do with TR5. Like a shoutout without having to do any actual work of connecting the older story. Maybe I'm being too pessimistic here, but I still see the differences between TR1 and TRA or even Classic Winston and LAU Winston and I just... feel like the past stories might go through such huge adaptations we might wonder if it's "bringing them back" or just doing their own thing with an artefact of the same name. Hey, I can be only pleasantly surprised if I have low expectations! (Well, I secretly have many hopes but I'd rather not because that way lies disappointment.) It's fun to listen to all these speculations though! Lots of stuff would be awesome to see again, if done right :)

Besides Kurtis, there’s also Lara’s working class edgy cousin Melissa from TRAE but I don’t think she counts as a playable character fully as TRAE was cancelled and the Restoration Project is nowhere near finished, the leaked alpha build it uses as its base only letting us swap Lara’s model for hers or Indiana Jones’s (who I guess could be kept in the final game as an alternate character or outfit/skin as the long scrapped male TR protagonist, Fletcher Christian for a laugh). Melissa would still be cool to see even outside the eventual fully finished TRAE: she’s basically the Tails to Lara’s Sonic & Kurtis’s Shadow or Blaze but with the personality & skills of Rouge the bat. Basically from a side of the Croft family that’s not rich and her being the co-op character is explained as her wanting to join Lara on an adventure just to see how she gets her artefacts. It’s implied she was originally intending to burgle Lara’s Home but Lara instead offered to trade items she found with her Yu-Gi-Oh cards style so Melissa could sell them on the black market to provide for her family. This latter bit would have appeared in the game as a secrets trading system with other players via WLAN on the OG release & internet on later platforms so the player could build up sets of artefacts in order to unlock secret bonus levels.

I'd definitely give a lot to have some more connection to AOD especially if we find out what happens to Kurtis 😊

When you mentioned the doppelganger, it hit me that she's had a lot of those in various places. The "bacon Lara" in the first game, the statue in the Temple of Osiris, even the reflections in those trick mirrors in several of the games. You might even include the figure on her cenotaph in the framing story of Chronicles. Also, the first few games all end with defeating the Big Boss and then Lara having to go through one more trial before escaping. In Last Revelation, she traps (not destroys) Set and then gets stuck under the pyramid herself as the whole thing collapses (and the the closing credits show her endlessly wandering around that tomb, fighting zombies and dodging traps for all eternity). Why wouldn't she put up with only a certain amount of this before re-opening the seal and trying to strike a deal with Set to free them both? Surely this is the source of her darker persona come AOD; she's basically possessed the same way Von Croy had been earlier.

In those times of deep uncertainty regarding the franchise, which is slowly growing into disinterest, hearing you theorize so passionately about stories I used to really love as a kid, takes me back to that time, when I used to theorize myself. This feels good, and it's making me curious again about what could come next. There sure is a lot of material to explore and expand! I didn't realize all the links between the Atlanteans throughout the franchise, it definitely feels like more than coincidence. Hope we'll start getting clues in the close future about what they're preparing!

Amazing video! THere are so many cool ideas here which could totally work in a United timeline! I think for me, seeing characters return like Kurtis, Amanda, Natla and even Tihocan would be a wonderful way to remember Lara's past adventures while creating new ones!

You actually generated some interested in Tihocan for me! Before I couldn't have cared less! Tbh I don't think any subjects will be brought up again outside of brief references. It should all be about moving forward, and I can't see Crystal bringing up subject matter from some old ass PS2 games, because then for context they'd have to retell those stories...

I didn't even make the connection between Tihocan and the dead kings and queens in Legend. That's a good theory. In England, Lara mentions that a group of people raise kings and queens in order to shape the course of human history. Could be interesting to see if this idea returns.

I would go the other way on Kurtis and say there's no chance of him returning *because* he's so well defined. The more vague and open-ended a lore element is, the more opportunity there is to do new things with it, without having to worry about contradicting established canon or upsetting fans. Someone like Kurtis presents very limited opportunities to explore new avenues, do your own thing and put your own stamp on the idea.

Great video! There are a lot of interesting points. This video sums up well why I think unifying the timelines can be great if done right. As for what Crystal is planning to do, all I can conclude is this: It's pretty much confirmed that the next game is going to tie in with the upcoming anime series, live-action series, and upcoming movie. (It may even unite the previous films with this new timeline. But, we don't know yet.) We know that something like this has never been done before. So Crystal either has a brand new storyline that will extend into future games and collaborators or, for the sake of unifying the timelines, Crystal could be revisiting each established adventure. I have reasons to believe that Crystal is planning to remaster or remake the previous titles. If you want to know more, I'll explain it in another post. But I warn you that my "evidence" can simply be circumstantial. Another theory is that the leak is true, and everything will tie to that. We'll have to wait and see.

I would honestly love to see everything tie back to Atlantis and the three rulers. Like I agree with you, I think that is at the core of the series. And Natla is effectively Lara's nemesis, she has to come back. And I also wonder where Tihocan is. Imagine Natla freeing Seth and working with the Nephilim guy too. Then Tihocan and Horus show up to help Lara in some way. And I'd give anything to see Kurtis in a game again.

What I really want to happen is Trinity had been created by Natla, Tihocan and Qualopec, this would connect the Survivor Trilogy with The Classics and start at this game retelling the Classic Era with modern graphics and improvements... I think we should have the Classics and LAU Trilogy remade or reimaginated, like Capcom is doing with Resident Evil 2 and 4.

Honestly, Amanda and Kurtis need to make a comeback. They're the most fleshed out side characters, suggesting that Tihocan was the Shaman/ wizard just works! I'd die if they confirmed it 😂

In TR3, in nevada section, can we mention the fact the artefact "Element 115" is in an alien UFO in aera 51 ? Ok, seems the artefact have been used by the area 51 staff as a powerful energy source to power the UFO, but the fact it seems be "compatible" with alien technology makes me ponders about...

Absolutely love this video!! I've been thinking a lot about who we may see again and I'd love if anyone from the LAU trilogy returned including Natla. Touching on what you said at 20:41 however, I always assumed that this really was Natla's true death this time. We see after Lara yeets Mjölnir at her and she falls into the acid that she orders Doppie to take her to that chamber that heals her of her wounds. After finding this out I always thought this was the explanation as to why Natla was able to recover each time she 'died' (with flawless skin no doubt). I really want to see her again and i think its very possible when also thinking back to Shadow's deleted scene, but I always thought Lara's Shadow featured her true death, and if we saw her again I'd assume they would be discarding this ending with Doppie watching her burn in the acid. But yeah it is Natla after all, she probably got up and splashed some water in her face and she was fine again lmao. (EDIT: Also I really hope they bring back Grey DeLisle!!)

So my theory of how they could connect all the times lines based on things we already know and theories some of which are mentioned in the video is as follows (this is probably going to be long so please bear with me) : Natla, Tihocan and Qualopec are nicknamed the Order of Trinity by their fellow Atlantians for their advances in technology, magic, medicine etc. However Natla becomes obssessed with the idea that their advancements could be used to create a forced evolution and starts conducting unethical experiments using the scion with the agenda of bringing about the seventh age. Natla is banished by Tihocan and Qualopec and is frozen in a crystal for her transgressions, Qualopec retires to what becomes his 'tomb' and decides to watch over his piece of the scion. Tihocan initally chooses to do the same but eventually tires of this and decides to leave his tomb/fake his death and instead goes out into the world and becomes the Shaman/Merlin etc watching over humanity to ensure that it does not make the same mistakes as him and his fellow Atlantians made. Natla is eventaully reawoken and goes on to create Natla Technologies, she discovers that a group dating back as far as Atlantis calling itself the Order of Trinity upholds her belief that humanity can be controlled and changed for the better through the use of ancient artifacts. Natla ends up becoming the sole benefactor of Trinity so that she has her own personal army to help bring about the seventh age through any means necessary. Amelia Croft disappears in Tibet after surviving a plane crash with her daughter Lara. The events of TR 2013 and Rise happen with Lara destroying the divine source which was an Atlantian artifact that gave mortals immortailty but could possibly have different effects on an already immortal Atlantian. Lara also learns that her father was killed by Trinity. A few years after the events of Shadow, Lara has made a name for herself as a famous archaeologist and Natla having heard of the young woman who stopped Trinity several times decides to hire her to find the scion in Qualopec's tomb. Knowing Lara won't hand over the scion so easily she sends Larson to get it from her. She knows Lara's past with Trinity so she doesn't send anyone directly tied to Trinity so as not to raise Lara's suspicions. The events of anniversary happen and Natla deals with Lara directly as she knows how much of a threat Lara is to her plans. The events of of Tomb Raider 2 through AOD happen. The sword fragments are made of the same meteroite that Lara encounters in TR3. Tihocan still in possesion of Atlantian knowledge forms the meteroite to create both the swords and gates which lead to Helheim, the blue liquid at Helheim is a liquid form of the same substance the Divine source was made from. Tihocan would bring worthy leaders that had proven themselves to Helheim to grant them immortailty so that they could help him guard and inspire humanity for the better. However the liquid source somehow became corrupted and created the zombie like thralls, so Tihocan instead crystalised the ancient leaders (such as King Arthur) and told the stories of these great leaders which became myths and legends over time. Natla at the events of Underworld would reveal she killed Richard while also revealing she is in fact the secret head of Trinity. There is probably a few things I missed or didn't think of that could fit together. I love the idea of Tihocan teaming up with Lara at some stage to take down Natla. I also think that the time bending in Legend is somehow tied to Lara's being able to see directly into the past when she puts parts of the scion together

Oh my... Just get tHe ParEnTs out of the picture and let Lara be the icon that made her name and fortune all by herself

TL:DR This is my theory: Lara Croft is older and is now a world famous archeologists and adventurer who is somewhat of a believer of religious beliefs. She has debated psudo Archeologists and even confronted the Ancient Astronaut theorists who have ridiculed her and smeared her name. She one day gets a call from a mysterious man that was "watching" her throughout time (Tiocan) and would want to work with her. She accepts and travels to India to meet him but was ambushed by Trinity. Now Lara must decide whether she should continue with this or abandon the mission altogether. This would lead up to where we see The Vatican as the base of operations for Trinity and they would soon start investigating an ancient dig site in New Mexico in which Natla would be discovered and Natla would lure out Tihocan and he would reveal his true identity to Lara as one of the leaders of Atlantis. Trinity would then look at the spear from TR:Chronicles and it would be linked to the divine source. Finally, Marco Bartoli would act as a villan and also Natla and this would lead Lara to travel to locations like Venice, Rome, and Rügen (divine source origins).

In The Tomb Raider 2 expansion pack "Return to Russia" she fights tons of Yeti. Maybe go after the origin of said Yeti. In TR 3, what if the extraterrestrials get summoned sending Lara on an X-Files adventure.

I always felt like the classic games were possible in the universe of the LAU trilogy, if you ignore lore that wasn't directly explained in-game (such as the parents thing). With the survivor trilogy I think the biggest conflicts are with TR1/anniversary due to Lara's first killing experience, but I still think many adventures of her could work (though no longer the LAU ones due to the family thing)

I'm loving the Tihocan theory. It creates the question though: is there anyone Lara has previously encountered whom would likely have been Tihocan shape-shifted?

Fantastic episode, Chris! I would really like to see Von Croy and Kurtis return, and I believe Natla and the Doppelganger will come back at some point. With the upcoming unification, there are so many possibilities if they do it correctly. It's the main reason I'm excited about the unified era, because as of now, anything is possible again in Tomb Raider. The developers are playing in the entire sandbox instead of a small corner of it. I've said this before, but I also want to see characters like Anaya and Carter Bell return. I want Lara to have a tomb-raiding rival who occasionally gets the best of her. And while I agree that it's probably very unlikely, I kinda want to see Seth return as well. More of Lara against ancient deities, please!

I want to know about the mystery of architecture discrepancies between 2003 & 2006 in the ancient world, they went from having the most complex structures to having carved marks clearly on walls to indicate traversal routes - I want it explained just how an ancient world obsessed with complex and convoluted traversal of their creations became so basic seemingly without reason!!!!!

Anniversary is the only Tomb Raider I have played and finished. I could never get passed the waterfall growing up with the OG cause I havent tried.

That is creepy that the statue of Qualopec moves... I always wondered what happened to them. Someone should make some memes of Tihocan outside his tomb, up to shenanigans... As cool as Natla is, I don't like the idea of her bieng the sole survivor through bieng frozen in time... and the others dying. I also love Tomb Raider 1... but I never liked the blood and flesh-walls, and mutants Atlantis twist from the ps1 game. With Tomb Raider 2 and 3 I'd like to see more with Marco Bartolli, Dr. Willard, Sophia Leigh.

What IF tihocan actually did go for a stroll, and we see him in game four, which would explain why falling didn't kill him, and he DID actually come back to protect his part of the scion, which also explains why he could take a million bullets and still live, you said he could look like a regular human, I'm thinking if that's true tihocan was actually Pierre. Crystal should have carried on the direction that started in Underworld (which for me is the best game in the franchise) the reboot games were awful and not necessary. I would like to see Anaya from Legend return again in future games.

I’ve just thought of another loose end from Tomb Raider 4, what happened to the character of Jean-Yves after he was freed by Lara in the Citadel level ? He was one of my favourite characters in the series and I was very sad he did not make an appearance in Chronicles or in Angel Of Darkness 😕

I'm wondering what design they'll go with in future games. You know like will they go for something stylised like the older games or realistic looking like the more recent ones. I'd love them to go for a more stylised over realistic looking...this is not relevant to the topic at hand but watching this got me thinking...simply because i prefer the asthetic of the older games, there's just something charming about it.

Let's make one thingclear. There is no way in hell to 'unify' Classic Lara with later incarnations.

I aways had the feeling that is possible to put together the new trilogy with the classics (once reboot trilogy is about Lara's origin story). Of course, some details have to pass throught some changes in order to make everything possible (like some dates and her parents in Chronicles). And, in the end, I aways end up thinking Angel of Darkness is a good spot to move on in the series. I dream about a good remake about this one and new TR games from it (like continue her adventure from there). Great video! ❤️🌟❤️

I would love the original titles up to AOD remade. They were the best of the series in my opinion and just needed work on them to improve the gameplay, controls and to go more in depth in story. I really don't like this new whiny Lara especially voiced by Camila, she just isn't as likeable. The focus being on her parents too went away from the original too much. I found it really disappointing. I loved how independant she was because they disowned her, it took away from her character too to chase up on her dads past discoveries, I loved that she chose what to discover not based on daddy issues. I also don't care about any character added to the game since Kurtis either. I feel they aren't needed, she could have done it all alone or with very little interaction and help. Keep the focus on the enemies and give them in depth back stories and as you've mentioned there are so many that could return in interesting ways, like Natla, the Mafia and Von Croy.

I never did buy that Trinity was gone that easily and that Dominguez was the main villan. Especially when the nutso Constantine? Dominguez was nice compared to Constantine. There had to be more ppl involved. That was what always bothered me about Shadow. For underworld, id love to find out where the doppleganger went afterwards.

Hm. We know that Atlantis had its mitts all over ancient civilizations. After the fall caused by Natla, the other 2 fled and created civilizations around them in Peru and Greece. Could it be that Trinity was actually a cult startee by Natla or Qualopec, leaders of the triumverate? Ane that the assassination order for Richard were both Trinity AND Natla?

Honestly i became a fan thanks to the Survivor Trilogy. Only recently played the Avalon saga and now trying to play through the first titles junkiness xD xD (they are really a chore to get through gameplay-wise xD ).. Frankly IMHO Tomb Raider should first of all chill out on its cost.. Shadow costed 250ml... and while the Survivor Trilogy sold HALF of the total sales of the entire franchise their high production cost meant very low returns.. not good. I wouldn't mind less focus on gunplay and more puzzle and exploration (but i don't want a boring game TBH, i play TR mostly for the engaging story :D ) Having said that i really doubt that if CD bring back anything at all would be anything more than Natla/the Atlantideans.. they are easily the only "old stuff" most general fans know about old TR. Let's be hones, "purist" TR fans are not as numerous as "casual/modern" fans. And "purist" will never be satysfied so i find little value in trying to pander to them. I personally like gaming trilogy/overarching stories.. but most gaming companies don't like it.. which is a pity..

The Xbox exclusive DLC seriously left a bad taste in my mouth being a long time TR fan and PlayStation user. After that with the survivor trilogy, I felt things died off a bit. This video has almost taken me back to the time of waiting on sequels coming out pre-survivor, who knows what we’ll get! 😁

When Lara died in the game series she died me forever. That's all about timeline for me.

Unfortunately I don't think any of these characters will be present in the new tomb raider game. I have no hope for the franchise anymore. It's going to be another no tomb raider tomb raider game.

Maybe it's just me, but does anyone else feel like CD just needs to leave the Natla and Atlantis plotlines alone? For me it's getting as annoying as Lara's parents storylines, just move on already. Tomb Raider came out 27 years ago, it's time to come up with something else, and stop recycling plot points from a game that's nearly 30 years old. What made the original 5 games so unique, was in each game Lara had a different artifact to discover and mythology to explore. Personally for me, I felt TR3 did that the best, creating four (five with the expansion) unique backstories and settings for the artifacts. There's so much more that could be mined (pun intended) from the meteorite artifacts mythos than Atlantis and Natla. But I'd still rather they left those artifacts back in TR3 and the PS1 era, instead of beating that dead horse for more content. In saying that though, CD's only original story after nearly 20 years with the franchise was the Survivor Trilogy, and that just *sucked.* They also felt more like Uncharted or Assassins Creed than Tomb Raider. And when you've walked away from the identifying fundamentals of a Tomb Raider game, then for me, that's just no longer a Tomb Raider game. So no, I don't really count the Survivor Trilogy as canon, and I don't think many others do either. That's why CD is trying to combine the timelines, by forcing the terrible Survivor Trilogy with the classic originals, they're hoping that nostalgic good will from the fans, will extend to the fans accepting the divisive Survivor Trilogy. So maybe it's best they keep recycling Core Designs ideas, because there hasn't been a fresh plot or gameplay idea introduced since Core Design left the series. And no, the grappling hook doesn't count because Core included it in Chronicles. I just hope one day we get a real, original Tomb Raider game again some day. It's been a long time since AoD.
