More French repertoire this time, the beautiful Tombeau de Lenclos by Gautier. This guitar is a joy to play, and beautifully put together by Rohan Lowe of Lowe Guitars: www.loweguitars.co.uk It is tuned to the same intervals of a baroque lute, and I'm reading straight from the lute tablature. It was not intended to sound like a baroque lute, it has its own aesthetic and a beautiful tone. More videos to come. I teach students across the globe via Zoom. Let me know if interested. If you like what I do, why not "buy me a coffee" by making a donation to www.paypal.com/paypalme/Suppo... All donations go to help fund my free videos, research and websites - a sadly not-for-profit venture! Rob

Rob, more French lute music, please! It have grown a love for it over the last decade. "Like a perfume, you just can't find the edges of it." What a great description.

Thanks, Neal. Yes, it creeps into your being without you being aware, and then you slowly realise you can’t live without it! And we both love that crossover between it and Scottish lute music. Best wishes to you, Neal.

When to the sessions of sweet silent thought I summon up remembrance of things past, I sigh the lack of many a thing I sought, And with old woes new wail my dear time's waste: Then can I drown an eye, unus'd to flow, For precious friends hid in death's dateless night, And weep afresh love's long since cancell'd woe, And moan th' expense of many a vanish'd sight; Then can I grieve at grievances foregone, And heavily from woe to woe tell o'er The sad account of fore-bemoaned moan, Which I new pay as if not paid before. But if the while I think on thee, dear friend, All losses are restor'd, and sorrows end. [WS, sonnet 30] Your playing of Gaultier's wonderfully meditative tune, his elegy in celebration of M. de L'Enclos, calls to mind this very musical poem. Admirable both ! Kudos to luthier Rohan Lowe for building this gem of an instrument, and to you, maestro, for this deeply moving, soulful performance. Heartfelt thanks, with very best wishes from France.

Great to hear the 13 string again Rob. I think I can hear hints of Robert de Visee in this piece. Very different from German Baroque, as you say, but interesting for it & pleasant.

Hi Conall. I think you can hear hints of Gautier in de Visée. Ennemond Gautier was one of the first to create this style, with Denis Gautier perfecting it. Rob de Visée was a latecomer to the style, perhaps even its final flourish before the inevitable demise. Glad you like it!

I like the amorphous thing, but can understand how fewer people would. Also, it seems like there's a lot more freedom of interpretation so more required of the player or else it ends up being just a formless mess. :)

One of the French lute players said, “Why don’t we notate our music the way we play it?”, which always gives me pause for thought!
