Doc’s last words of “This is funny” was reference to him telling people, throughout his life, that he’d die with his boots on. But in the end, shoeless in a hospital.

Doc Holiday was that once in a lifetime roll that even the best actors/actresses may never get to play, and Kilmer did not waste his opportunity(F*** the Academy). And that's very high praise considering all the amazing performances offered in this film, everyone brought their "A" game and then some(and he still stood out). A truly classic movie, and one of the best westerns ever put to film.

For years I thought he said Huckleberry too...turns out, Kilmer's southern accent made it sound that way. He actually says "Huckle bearer." Basically telling Ringo he'll be his pallbearer.

Believe it or not, Wyatt Earp actually walked into a river in the middle of a crossfire, constantly yelled “NO”, and didn’t get shot. Unbelievable.

No he didn't. That scene is PURE Hollywood. If you want to get a better idea of how that confrontation actually played out, I recommend InRangeTV's video on it. I'll leave the link here to it, but if you're not keen on clicking on links (which is good practice for security on the internet) you can all just search out "InRangeTV How Wyatt Earp Murdered Curly Bill Brocious?" and it'll pop up. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eN-baJuCtN3bk58.html With that said, the way the confrontation probably did go do down was still something to see. While he didn't walk out into a river in the midst of gunfire like that (he had gotten off his horse and was approaching a ridge overlooking the Cowboy's campsite), Earp claims that Bill's shot did whiz pass him through his overcoat. Essentially they surprised each other, Bill shot at him, missed, and he unloaded two shots from his shotgun into Bill. Later another bullet flew past his horse pommel as he was bending down that he said he could actually smell. Of course, there's a fair bit of circumstantial reasoning to figure that Earp was prone to dramatizing the events of his own life for the notoriety. So who knows if what he claims is 100% truth. But we know it did occur, and however it occurred, wasn't as portrayed in this film. But it was possibly fairly dramatic in its own sense if Earp's words are true.

The Earps were not as squeaky clean, especially Wyatt, but he had a huge heart. Doc Holliday as an actual doctor, a dentist. After contracting Tuberculosis while practicing, he didn't want to die from it, so he became a gunfighter and led a self-destructive lifestyle. But because of his steady hands and quick reflexes he was too good and still died of TB.

Yea this film glosses over a lot of the moral ambiguities with Wyatt's life and these events. It definitely takes it all in the best possible light for Wyatt. But it is one hell of an entertaining film.

The big problem that always comes up with the Earp detractors is they try to make the Cowboys insto misunderstood hooligans. No, the Cowboys were murderous outlaw scum. The Earps were bad, the Cowboys were worse.

On the other hand you may be the antichrist.” I think every married man has felt this way at least once. 😄When John Wayne was a young kid working in the props department at one of the big studios, he became friends with Wyatt Earp. In later years he always said that his distinctive walk and slow drawling voice were based on Earp.

A little context, Matti and Wyatt had a common law marriage. He was a pimp and she was one of his girls. So when Ike calls him out on it its true. The other thing that a lot of people miss is Jonny Tyler is Bill Bob Thornton

This is the only Western I regularly re-watch and that’s primarily for Kilmer’s mastery at his role. Like others mentioned, it was blasphemous he wasn’t even nominated for the role because his performance isn’t just iconic, it’s legendary. I mean-I literally can’t see anyone else playing Holiday to even the same level as Kilmer. Nobody should even try, he locked it down forever.

Many people believe that Val Kilmer deserved an Oscar for this role. As great as Tommy Lee Jones and John Malkovich are, they didn't need Oscar noms for THOSE roles. I would've loved to have seen Kilmer and Oldman from True Romance get noms that year.

@@authorrayrogers Jones' performance would have been far too iconic to leave out. To this day, it is still his most revered role. Malkovich's nomination is arguable when compared to a lot of the other candidates, but that performance has also become underrated over the years.

Mattie wasn't Wyatt's legal wife - - she was a common-law wife, a girlfriend who had wife status from prolonged association with him. If it came to a legal case or lawsuit Wyatt would be responsible for Mattie's welfare and actions, but there were no marriage vows that would require a divorce to dissolve. There were five Earp brothers - - James, Virgil, Wyatt, Morgan and Warren - - and they tended to associate with prostitutes, which is why Ike Clanton accused Virgil of being a "pimp." Mattie was one of these, as was James's wife.

Mattie was actually a prostitute who had been working for Wyatt. He, Virgil, and Morgan were all, at one time or another, essentially pimps. All three took up with prostitutes they turned into common-law wives.

Yeah, Arizona have NEVER recognized "common law" marriages ... not then, not now. So, actually, she was never any more than a girlfriend, but the status you spoke of was indeed NEEDED back then, because even then, upper society, which they participated in, looked down on prostitutes and, they even looked down on unmarried couples living together. Also, girls usually go through the entire movie looking poorly at Wyatt, thinking he was horrible for even looking at Josephine, but he NEVER cheated on anyone ... they never actually hooked up until over a year AFTER all three split up and went their separate ways. Wyatt tracked down Josie after his talk with Doc, and Maddie was already long gone by then. Just thought you might like to add that to your notes😊👍.

As you have probably gathered by now, Addie, Wyatt Earp, Morgan Earp, Virgil Earp and their families, Doc Holliday, and Ike Clanton and the Cowboys gang were actual, real-life historical figures in the Wild West. The shootout at the OK corral actually took place largely as portrayed, with Wyatt being the only participant who was not killed or wounded in the gunfight. The incident in which Doc and the Earps were caught in the crossfire ambush at the river, during which Wyatt Earp waded out into the water amidst a hail of bullets, also really happened. (Laudanum is a mixture of opium and alcohol, and Wyatt's common-law wife was addicted to it, which led to her death from an overdose.)

Holiday was also not wounded in the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. He did have a bullet go through his coattail but none hit him.

And Ringo is still lying under a rock cairn, beneath the big oak, he can still be visited to this day,-no one is sure just how he died, or at whose hand,-there is some speculation that it may have been by his own.

I should have added that the big oak is no more, it having fallen to the ravages of time parts on the ground remaining-the chances of "Doc" doing the deed are quite remote-hem having been involved in a trial in another state.@@88wildcat

Although it doesn't show the passage of time, John Henry "Doc" Holiday was a dentist who died 6 years after the events of Tombstone in a Colorado sanitorium of Tuberculosis ,

In real life Curly Bill did accidentally shoot the old town sheriff. He was going to hand over his guns, but being drunk or high as the film depicted, at the time the gun accidentally went off. The sheriff didn't die right away, and he and Wyatt Earp gave statements saying they believed that it was an accidental shooting and not straight murder as was shown in the movie.

I think the movie try to meet in the middle. Look like a accident. Also looks purposely. Similar to the johnny Ringo killing. They can't say for certain. Notice doc aim look weird yet possible. Then the area where johnny Ringo looked like suicide

I have an original copy of the Tombstone Epitaph from 1881. On the front page is an article defending Curly Bill in the shooting. This stuff really happened!!.

That final Wyatt/Doc scene is one of the saddest moments in cinema history, genuinely moving. Followed by a happy ending to round off the film.

This is more than a Western. This is History. That was the Gunfight at the OK Corral. The Earp family and Doc Holiday were all famous at the time/

Glad you enjoyed it! Of the *many* films based on the events in Tombstone in 1881 and thereabouts, this one is the closest to the actual historical facts -- although many of the facts shown here are *suspected* facts that were never actually proved. (e.g., Wyatt's vendetta against the Cochise County Cowboys after the death of his brother Morgan is a fact, but whether he actually killed anyone in that vendetta is disputed, as is the question of whether Doc Holiday killed Johnny Ringo.) Doc Holiday is always the most flamboyant, fun role in these films, but I don't think anyone has touched Kilmer's portrayal.

A great book to read is Wyatt Earp Speaks by Wyatt Earp edited by John Richard Stephens, Wyatt gives first hand accounts and it is supported with witness statements and newspaper write ups of the time. Wyatt Warp did kill Curly Bill and his statement to the others near the river was, "If you fellows are hungry for a fight you can go on and get your fill" " I got Curly Bill and I was satisfied". Wyatt does not mention Johnny Ringo, papers and Court documents prove it was not Doc Holliday that killed Johnny Ringo. Holliday was in Cokorado at the time of Ringo's death. Great movie it strongly follows a lot of what was written with exception of Holliday-Ringo shootout.

Congratulations on your very first western, Addie! That line when Virgil told his distraught wife, "I've still got one good arm to hug you with" is one of the many historically true things that really happened in this fantastic movie.

As others have said not only is this a great western based on actual people(with a lot of poetic license) Val Kilmer took his role to the top.level. He no doubt should have won an Oscar. Everytime he spoke or even was in the scene he grabbed your undivided attention... I've seen this at least 50x and it never fails to entertain... Great reaction Addie❤ Another great western is the 2007 version of 310 to Yuma with Russell Crowe and Christian Bale .....

Wyatt and Maddy were never married however Josephine and Wyatt did marry and were together 47 years this is basically an embellished recount of the shootout at the OK CORRAL and what happened before and after pretty close to accurate including Wyatt in the river againr curly bill

I will never get tired of this movie and glad you got around to it. Unforgiven [1992], True Grit [2010], High Noon [1952] and The Magnificent Seven [1960] are all westerns I think you'd enjoy. The Magnificent Seven is a western remake of a Japanese film called The Seven Samurai and Unforgiven was remade in Japan under the same title but set in Japan with Samurai in place of cowboys. If you only watch once please watch Unforgiven it's still my favorite Clint Eastwood film as both actor and director.

Watch Sergio Leone's "Dollars" trilogy before "Unforgiven." The latter film deconstructs the entire Western genre, in which the "Dollars" trilogy features prominently, albeit as "Revisionist" Westerns.

Addie, this is almost entirely a true story. Real people and kind of a condensed version of a lot of things from the lives of these people. Wyatt once was involved in a gunfight with several people at the same time. When it was over there were nearly 20 holes in his coat, but in his entire life he was never shot once. Oh and Wyatt and Maddie were never married. She had been a saloon girl he met in his travels and they were traveling through life together for a time. Enjoyed your reaction. Will be checking out more of your vids.

This was the 4th film i remember seeing Michael Biehn (Ringo) and Bill Paxton (Morgan) in together. 1sr was Terminator, 2nd Aliens, 3rd was Navy Seals. Biehn was also a gun slinger in season 2 of the Mandalorian the Ahsoka episode.

A lot of people don't notice Billy Bob Thornton, as the first dealer that Kurt Russell slaps. Billy Bob in Slingblade and in U-Turn, and this... 3 unbelievably different and unrecognizable characters.

The exchange of Latin between Ringo and Doc: This is not a direct translation but in general what they meant: Wyatt: He's drunk. Doc (Latin): There is truth in wine. (Meaning: Even if I'm drunk, I know what I'm saying, or When I drink, I speak the truth.) Ringo (Latin): Do what you do best. Doc (Latin): I don't think drinking is what I do best. Ringo (Latin): Some people need to learn from experience. (Touches his gun). Doc (Latin): Rest in peace. (Meaning: It's your funeral)

Wyatt was the luckiest gunman ever. Both him and Curly had double barrel 12gauges loaded with triple aught buckshot (basically a fist-full of .32s firing at the same time), and they were 50feet from each other before Wyatt let loose both barrels. Anything at that range became ground chuck. And when he tried to ride away, his gun belt slid down his legs hobbling him around his knees. So all the while this is happening, Curly's boys kept on shooting at him. Finally, after getting his belt up, Wyatt rides back to his buddies and that's where he found his coat shredded on both sides from triple aught buck and .45s, three holes through his pants, his saddle horn sheared off, the heel of one of his boots shot off, five through the crown of his hat, and three through the brim. His guardian angel was working overtime that day.

Thank you. Wyatt Earp lived long enough to be an advisor to movie stars of Hollywood during the silent age, and was friends with the first great cowboy star Tom Mix. There is a, completely fictional, movie "Sunset" (1988) starring James Garner and Bruce Willis that covers that period of his life.

Three scenes in cinema that will guarantee to bring most guys to tears: 1...the death of Mr. Spock ("The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few") 2...the death of Anakin Skywalker ("You were my brother Anakin. I loved you") and 3...the death of Doc Holliday ("If you ever had any feeling for me, leave now") That scene kills me EVERY time I watch it.

Bill Paxton (Morgan Earp) and Michael Biehn {Johnny Ringo) were both in "Aliens"! Michael Biehn kinda disappeared for a long time, but then he showed up in The Mandalorian, the episode we first saw Jedi Ahsoka Tano. He was the right hand man to the woman who ran the town.

The behind the scenes story of this movie is absolutely fascinating. The screenwriter, Kevin Jarre, was the original director. He was fired after four weeks because of his inexperience and clashing with the actors. Kurt Russell took over directing duties but didn't want to be credited, so he brought in journeyman George Pan Cosmatos to basically just do what Kurt told him. Their agreement was that Kurt would never reveal this while George was alive, but after he died Kurt opened up about the whole saga. Michael Biehn hated Cosmatos, and said that basically NOBODY directed the movie.

After Doc has to drop out of the Earp Vendetta Ride, they house him at Henry Hooker's Ranch. Many people don't know, but the man cast as Henry Hooker is Charlton Heston - an actor who has starred in many great Western movies of the past.

Great reaction to an awesome movie! As usual from Addie. Val Kilmer is, in my mind, one of the most underrated actors of my generation. He is so insanely good at completely being whatever character he is playing. Good movies or not so good, he is just incredible. From the legendary Tombstone to the ludicrous Top Secret!, from the ever-changing character of The Saint to Mr. Mojo Rising (Jim Morrison) in The Doors, from the Iceman in Top Gun to the mega-genius college student Chris Knight in Real Genius, as Madmartagan in Willow and so many other movies I'm not sure he ever found a role that he couldn't become.

Let's give Addie a round of applause for watching her VERY FIRST Western for her channel, although she did watch Back to the Future Part III (1990) which had Western elements. 👏👏 I'm so glad that you enjoyed Tombstone (1993), despite your lack of interest in Westerns. I totally agree with you that Kurt Russell & Val Kilmer make a great duo as Wyatt Earp & Doc Holliday.

The pistol show down in the bar is an amazing scene. Doc insults Ringo, and then tells him in Latin that when he’s drunk, he’s speaking the truth 😅 then he completely clowns Ringo by copying his routine with a cup, perfectly, while also being completely shitfaced. He’s basically showing Ringo that he’s faster and better… Ringo knew he couldn’t beat Doc from that point on.

Next to "Blazing Saddles," this is a top western. Of course, there's a lot of great westerns, and they're all a bit different. I, too, am blind to Bill Paxton for some reason. But I have learned over time to recognize him when I know he's there. lol

Doc's woman was known as "Big Nose Kate". She was a character worthy of a movie of her own. That opening scene where Doc stabs the other card player really happened, but it happened years earlier. Doc didn't rob anyone. Instead, because it was self defense, he waited for the police and surrendered himself. He was taken into custody awaiting going in front of judge. Meanwhile, the man's friends formed a lynch mob and threatened to take Doc. Big Nose Kate started a fire in a stable across the street, and the mob broke up to put out the fire. She pulled a gun on Doc's guard and forced him to release Doc. The two fled the Texas town on horses she stole from the stable and ran to Dodge City. So, Kate was a badass.

As a newcomer to westerns you should be aware that TOMBSTONE is not your typical example. These are well known historical figures in an accurate historical setting. The script follows closely the biography of Wyatt, written by Stuart Lake, who was able to interview Wyatt extensively before Wyatt died in 1929. The gunfight at the OK Corral was choreographed to match the coronor's inquest record, right down to the placement of combatants and who shot who and in what order. There were a slew of witnesses and they were all familiar with the participants. They had been waiting for this fight like the fight in THE QUIET MAN between Sean Thornton and "Red" Will Danaher.

To me the best scene is when Doc kills Ringo. The second best is when Doc and Wyatt are seeing each other for the last time and Wyatt gives Doc the book he wrote about him.

13:39 FYI: Doc once faced a similar situation at Ft. Sumner over a--it figures, a poker game, but he WAS defending himself..Guy's pals were gonna hang him and Wyatt wouldn't have it..Made 'em all stand down, thus earning Holiday's loyalty and frendship. About 25 TV shows/Films about Earp and Holiday, but this one got the thier personalities,Tombstone events and aftermath perfectly.

I always laugh that no one who reacts to this movie ever seems to recognize Billy Bob Thornton playing the guy who Wyatt smacks around. He just looks so different from his later roles that it's hard to believe that it's him.

To understand Doc Holliday you need to know he was dying slowly of tuberculosis so he gave up practicing medicine and moved west spending the remainder of his life drinking gambling and gun fighting seeking a less painful death but his steady hands quick reflexes and utter lack of fear made him unbeatable.

About Doc. He was a dentist. While living in Georgia as a young man, he and, I believe his cousin, fell deeply in love. Her family objected to the match, and she was sent to a convent, breaking their hearts. Doc developed Tuberculosis and moved to the dry west in hopes of relieving the symptoms.

Doc Holiday's one liners were the best. Doc had Tuberculosis, during his dual with Rango, the body can sometimes fight off Tuberculosis, so you can be on death's door one day and feel well the next. Wyatt got newspaper famous because he was the only one not shot at the OK Coral.
