Kara has been riding for about a year and a half now and her jumping skills have really progressed so we decided to take a closer look and help her take her riding to the next level!
In this video we are looking at Kara's basic MTB skills as she develops and learns more advanced skills. We are using the MTB hopper lite ramp to progress because it can be adjusted really easily from a really safe table top jump, gap jump, step down or even just to the flat ground. Kara has progressed really fast from learning all of her basic MTB skills and starting to learn more advanced MTB skills.

I'm old, I was quite old when I learned jumps. It took years. The thing that held me back was not understanding boosting. I kept absorbing take offs a bit with my limbs. I found that pushing with my feet with the front wheel pulled up made the whole thing just work better. Just a spring in the ankles on the pedals to start with. It feels like the push into the back tyre up the ramp, right to the lip, makes the back wheel hold the bike straighter in the air and, although you go higher, it feels safer. Next is to pull the bars towards your belt buckle and springing with the knees as well as the ankles on take off (boost) tom shows it perfectly in the slow mo. Took me years. So good when I got it!! Wear pads and have someone with you to learn.

Filming yourself is incredibly helpful , especially as there often is a huge difference between what you think and even what you feel you're doing and what you're actually really doing. And its difficult to understand when someone tries to explain what he sees and you get him/her wrong. Seeing yourself, in slo-mo is really the best thing to learn.

Some decent progression there, I found learning the bunny hop helped get more height on jumps. Have you considered doing any jump specific strength and conditioning/agility training with Kara? Plyometrics and sprints would transfer greatly for pedaling power and getting that pop

I think one of the biggest problems with beginners is the position on the bike. They tend to stay to tall and it is hard to adapt to the motion on the bike at different speeds. I would not get in to the pop or any other details. I would start with the first setup (the long rollin), get the weight of the rider lower (flex them legs a bit more and keep the but over the rear axle) and hit the jumps at different speeds (increase the number of crancks or the lengts from the start to the ramp). Cheers Tom ! Thanks for the cool videos.

Doesn't matter how hard you pull if you don't preload by bending the knees more coming into the jump. If you watch Tom's slow motion, that preload is just a fraction of a second before the jump. For most people it is much slower. Best way to learn that is to practice getting the maximum height on the tiniest jump.

Pump tracks are great to learn to jump, helpfull for balence when doing maneys and learning to pop of the jumps. And your speed is controled by your pumping so it teaches you to flow better if your trying to clear stuff and get a bit looser on the bike. Pluss there a great workout. 🥵👍

Trying to progress my girls, the older two are 9 and 11, been riding flats for 5 years. Tecently got them some new 26" wheel proper bikes, ultra small frames, hydraulic brakes. No sus. Light weight 20lb bikes, so they can learn bike handling and gain some skills. Took them down a red trail (no forced jumps, or drops) at walking speed so they could see the obstacles then had some guy bollock me that I should have bought them full sus bikes before doing the trail. Bollocks. Bikes didn't have sus when I learned to ride, and the weight advantage made them easy to throw about! Your thoughts....?
@carlettob72
@carlettob72 3 жыл бұрын
Nice work..and my point of view. It's not only pulling! You need to push on the handlebar and then pull like in a bunnyhop (and like Tom is showing in the video) otherwise your body is not in the right position and you are going to pull only with the arms and not with the bodiweight. It takes time and confidence buiding and I'm still learning because it is scary... Well done anyway!
@mattgies
@mattgies 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it looks to me like Tom pushes the bars away at the base of the jump, so he has more space to pull the bars back towards him at the top of the jump.
@carlettob72
@carlettob72 3 жыл бұрын
@@mattgies not at the base in general but the arms must be fully extended at the end of the lip... I'm still working on this even if on a bigger ramp... This is a small ramp so maybe it seems he started at the base but on a longer lips it must be timed correctly otherwise you crash
@IthacaDon
@IthacaDon 3 жыл бұрын
I am a terrible jumper but it seems to me that being aware of when the rear wheel is clear of the ramp lip is very important. Once the rear wheel is clear of the ramp you can use the bottom bracket as the pivot point rather than attempting to lower the front too early and finding yourself doing a front wheelie and then OTB!

I'd say Kara is doing really good however she is looking a bit like a passenger on her bike. She is actually squishing the jump a lot too. That is, she isn't jumping off of the ramp. She is just rolling and using the angle of the ramp to go up. Then she keeps her body as low as possible and bends her knees up as she takes off. Learning to jump is scary though. Personally, I think drills are a better way to get better technique. Two that helped me, that might help others are; 1) practice manual bunny hops. That is, manual for a split second and then jump off the rear wheel before the front wheel comes down. When you get good at this, do it a meter or so before a gutter and hop up the gutter. So roll towards a gutter, manual about a meter from the gutter and then jump through the feet just before the rear wheel hits the gutter. This will really get you to lift the wheel to a good spot and then jump the whole bike up from the rear wheel with the bike in a good wheel up position. 2) Set the ramp up in front of a higher landing (above the lip) to force the rider to lift the wheel up to clear the landing and actually make them jump higher or risk running into the front of the landing. For the first ramp angle, the landing might be 40cm higher than the lip. It's basically a step up with the landing quite close to the take off.
