In this video I am teaching Kara to drop off on her MTB.. she is a complete MTB beginner but she is progressing well and for me teaching her its been really rewarding seeing her progress to this level.
We started on the basics and progressed through beginner MTB tricks, learnt how to ride corners, hills and common bike park features including jumps and in this video Kara is learning jumps!
We hope that you enjoy the video! :)

Kara, looks like you keep your body locked when you're in the air and upon landing. This is not criticism this is just observation. Try to compress your body upon Landing it will lessen the pressure on the suspension and make you land much smoother. And maybe transfer your body around a little bit while you're in the air forward to backwards loosen up a bit young lady. But excellent riding you are learning fast. Try and go with the flow of the Terrain. Try and relax a bit more. Just one person's observation and again not trying to criticize your doing very very good. Keep up the good work.

This is a superb video. The techniques are clearly demonstrated, but just as importantly, you’re showing the progression of a newbie. It’s awesome to watch her learn and sends a really positive message to other female mtb riders.

I started watching this channel around the time Kara first hit the Olympic mountain bike track. Regularly showing her progression since then (which has been really impressive) is a great way to differentiate this channel from all the other bike vlogs. It also seems to be having the bonus effect of getting rid of some of the more small minded KZfaq users. Win-win! Best wishes for your post-op recovery. Cheers.

What was said near the end about crashing being detrimental to your progress is huge. Most of us hurt our pride when we crash, but some of us get really put off by the pain of crashing and the fear of trying again. When I was really ambitious about getting my act together and doing slopestyle jumps, I watched barry nobles' jump class vid and then literally just began launching off 1 inch high kerbs. Then I went to 1 foot pump rollers, and so on. I only ever attempted what I actually felt confident I could do. By the time I made it to a 6 foot tabletop, I hadn't crashed once.

Your videos are perfect since generally, we see experts making the move. In your case, you are giving a lesson to someone who is not an expert and that gives the assurance that we can do it too. In my case specifically, I see the mistakes I make and I understand faster how to correct them. Example: until now, nobody had explained that it was necessary to put your body in the middle of the MTB to lighten the front wheel to perform the drop-offs. Indeed, an expert does it automatically and does not think that a novice does not know this.

She's getting good so quick! Those bikeparks in the uk look so amazing. All the bikeparks i've been to here in switzerland have no really good drop learning zones and the one in Lemzerheide is just above the bar next to the gondola, so definitely not comfortable to learn drops on for someone with little confidence in jumping and dropping...

What about the compressing arms close to the bars and pushing out as the front wheel leaves the lip technique? I've been trying that and it really helps avoid the front dropping first. In fact it feels much safer than the unweighting the front technique you recommend here.
@PaulGPixelBike
@PaulGPixelBike 4 жыл бұрын
Really jealous of Kara making such a big progress so fast. Couple of tips though. Do not practice drops and jumps alone, you might clear a feature 9/10 times, but that 1 time you can be fatigued or have a second of fear and faceplant knocking yourself out and being alone in this situation is really bad. I'm telling from experience. Also might wanna wear fullface when going of drops, I doubt enduro helmet will do much while faceplanting right into the dirt. Again, I know this from experience. Sadly. And yes, making a progress and then crashing will hurt your confidence and progress 100%. It's been 1.5 years since I broke my nose and had a concussion when I tried clearing a small drop (which I did 4 times previously), and I still can't bring myself upto continuing training. Anyways, these are just my tips.

You guys are so wise -learn but stop whilst you're ahead instead of pushing it. Would love to find something like that place for my own tech learning. Especially gaps - I like how you have access to multiple lines with same type of feature but different sizes. Most of where I ride it is either A-line with a big feature or a B-line with no feature. Not confidence inspiring for learning. Well done Kara and you to Tom as a teacher.

If you watch world cup racers they tend to set up more forward with their chest low, so they can push the bike through the drop and absorb the "lip" with their legs. Perhaps that is a more advanced drop technique for minimising time spent in the air?
