I was lucky enough to meet Jack Dempsey at his restaurant in NYC. He came up to me stuck out his hand and said “ Hi Sonny “. What a thrill because I had just read his biography Dempsey by the Man Himself. Great read. I was too shy and taken aback to pursue a conversation. Wish I had.

I read Dempsey as a kid and hobo on the trains had to fight for his life against the peadophiliacs who preyed on the kids, - tough start to a brilliant career.

No way! THAT is soooo AWESOME! As a young kid, my grandmother had a book on Jack Dempsey and had me read it. When I finished the book, she told me that she knew him! I said" how grandma", and she replied"we grew up together in Manassa, Colorado!" I couldn't believe it and from that point on I became a Jack Dempsey fanatic. It made me a boxing fan for life! I thought that was too cool on my grandma's part!

@@josephphoenix1376 Segregation is important for healthy societies. The marxists that oppose it committed more atrocities than all others combined in the 20th century, cheering for "diversity" is nothing less than hate speech. Everyone in America had a higher standard of living in segregated America.

Who could beaten him? 1: Ali because of his very different style, nothing like those days where they just stood in front of each other. 2:Tyson, just way more muscular and powerful and also hard to hit in his prime.

The Muhammad Ali who beat Cleveland Williams would have been far too fast and clever for both Dempsey and Louis .
@frankpaya690
@frankpaya690 3 жыл бұрын
Muhammad Ali was never known for being a power puncher the way Dempsey or Lewis or Marciano or Liston was, by the time Cleveland Williams fought Muhammad Ali, Cleveland Williams basically was a "resurrection", He had survived a gunshot wound to the abdomen from a 357. Liston said Cleveland Williams was who hit him the hardest. and it's always going to be questionable whether or not the two clay/ liston fights were fixed. The only time Liston was clearly ko'd was by leotis Martin a former sparring partner, who just by virtue of that had a huge advantage in knowing liston's fighting style and weaknesses. although Martin won the fight he never fought again after that due to a detached retina he suffered in that fight with Liston.
@ThefightingCelt
@ThefightingCelt 3 жыл бұрын
@@frankpaya690 Liston , who was much older than he claimed , was also clearly ko'd by Muhammad Ali . I said that Ali , at the specific time he fought Williams , would have easily dealt with any heavyweight in history . I know all about the hard hitting , yet slow , flat footed Cleveland Williams and his injury - but the fact is that he was tailor made for such a lightning fast master boxer like Ali , and irrespective of when he fought him , the outcome would have been the same . Ali , in 1966 , was at the very height of his powers .
@frankpaya690
@frankpaya690 3 жыл бұрын
@@ThefightingCelt he fought Cleveland Williams when Cleveland Williams was washed up, not when Cleveland Williams was at his prime. Muhammad Ali maybe could have stayed away from Williams, if they had fought when Williams was at his prime. Liston was Tko'ed when he wouldn't come out for the seventh round, in the second fight, even clay knew he hadn't hit l Liston hard, that's why he was yelling at Liston to get up, saying nobody will believe this, during the time Liston was on the canvas. Ali never clearly knocked out Liston, as Liston was soundly knocked out by leotis martin.

@@frankpaya690 I know . I think I made that quite plain . My whole argument was that at the time of this fight in Ali's career , he would have beaten any heavyweight in history . It's not about Williams - yes I know he was much older than Ali when this fight occurred , but even a younger , much fitter Williams would still not have beaten this Ali
@frankpaya690
@frankpaya690 3 жыл бұрын
@@ThefightingCelt we agree to disagree. Even Ali admitted a lot of his wins were from psychological warfare, not so much overpowering an opponent. With Foreman for example he wore Foreman out through a very dull fight really, where he was on the ropes the whole time absorbing punches.

According to old sports writers from back in Jack Dempseys day they all said Dempsey ducked all black fighters
@ccrowder
@ccrowder 3 жыл бұрын
Dempsey fought black fighters before he became champ. John Lester Johnson, that Dix references here was black. Dempsey's promoter vowed to never promote a mixed race championship fight because of all the ruckus it caused in the past. Dempsey talks about all this in his books. He says that Harry Wills was taylor made for him, but Sam Lankford would have been a bad matchup for him.
@Thelategreatjohnnybratton
@Thelategreatjohnnybratton 2 жыл бұрын
He did not duck black fighters. It’s important to understand the times. After Jack Johnson beat Jim Jeffries the country was engulfed in race riots. The promoter Tex Rickard would not match black vs white fighters. Great trainer Ray Arcel who was color blind said Dempsey would have beaten the black fighters of that era. It’s too bad those fights were not made but it was the way it was. Dempsey came under criticism from sports writers because of his avoiding WW1. Sports writers of that generation or any generation really often just need something to write about and are paid critics. I do know that Doc Kerns, Dempseys manager did not want Jack to fight Harry Greb. To us boxing historians that’s common knowledge. Jack would have fought anybody for the right $$$ but Kerns ran his career and ruined it. The bio of Dempsey Flame of Pure Fire by Roger Kahn is the definitive bio. Highly recommended reading.
