i love that absolutely calmly psychotic energy hearns possessed... it's rarely duplicated, although many a boxer attempt to pull off the "come at me, you can't hurt me" message. only a select few, such as hearns, & much more recently, notably in terence crawford, have i seen it done well; the smiling in yr opponent's face & just generally effing with them, much like a cat with a battered mouse. it's so brutally beautiful when executed appropriately. ♥️🥊♾

Let's be clear here though...Shields was only in this fight to survive, NEVER to win. All of his actions were to NOT get knocked out early and to carry Tommy into the later rounds which he did. And as a result, this proved to be a pyrrhic-victory for Shields...he'd lasted into the "Championship Rounds" with a guy like Hearns while not getting "too beaten-up" in the process. But, the truth be told, Shields never stood a chance and took a massive beating here...just one look at his back alone at the conclusion of the contest attests to that. He was on the defensive the entire fight and never showed any offensive capability. It was only a result of his severe defensive effectiveness and willingness to survive that he lasted as long as he did. His face, back and general posture at the end told the true true story of how badly he'd been beaten...

@@thetommoody ...Your comment is correct. However, it's more of a commentary on the greatness of Thomas Hearns, at the Welterweight level. I looked up Randy Shields, expecting to see a basic, journeyman career and found the following: *Career record of 41-9-1 (21 by KO) *Outpointed Sugar Ray Leonard to win the 1973 National AAU Light Welterweight Championship. *Lost to Sugar Ray Leonard by a ten-round unanimous decision on October 6, 1978. *Challenged Pipino Cuevas for the WBA Welterweight Championship on July 30, 1979, and lost by a fifteen-round unanimous decision. Shields lost by just one point on two of the three official scorecards. He was the only fighter to go the distance with Cuevas in eleven successful title defenses. *Won the vacant NABF Welterweight Championship in 1980. *Challenged Thomas Hearns for the WBA Welterweight Championship on April 25, 1981, and was stopped on cuts after twelve rounds. *Inducted into the California Boxing Hall of Fame in 2006. So this guy wasn't some tomato can-journeyman. I think fighters had real problems with Tommy's 78" reach. It was like fighting someone who stood 6' 6". He also, especially at 147 lbs, had fists of stone. He toyed with Shields, an excellent defensive boxer, like, as another poster put it, "a cat with a battered mouse."

Shields superb defense gave Tommy and SRL a test. Ray once said he was like trying to hit a shadow. As soon as you threw the punch, he had moved. When the Leonard-Hearns superfight was announced Shields, who fought both, was asked who'd win. He accurately predicted Tommy would build up a lead, but Ray would win the fight.

agree. his angles and footworks are fantastic! Sugar Ray has a great footwork and angles but it did not took long for Hearns to figure it out. while Shields gives Hearns a lot of trouble figuring out how to land his devastating right hand or any clean shot at all. Hearns can't find his range. Luckily for Hearns, he is tall, got long arms ,devastating power and a good counter-puncher it's hard to make a careless move against him.

This Randy Shields was so very good. His movements and angles are giving Hearns trouble landing his right or any clean shot. If he just live and fight in today's era I would give him a good chance beating Errol Spence, a sure win prediction over Keith Thurman, a 65-35 chance of beating Manny Pacquiao, even the top prime version, YES, I'LL GIVE HIM 65%. A couple of observations from Tommy Hearn's "greatest fan" :) - Opening myself up for some probable negative feedback but I ALWAYS admired Howard Cosell's fight commentary, especially when it concerned Hearns...he was spot on here with respect to Hearns' boxing ability and patience in taking Shields out, and, moreover, his expert analysis in the Leonard-Hearns-1 saga. - There's a very large difference in a man "coming to fight" vs. "coming to survive." Shields' fight plan here was clearly the latter...and he had the talent and gamesmanship to do so. Yes he landed some counter punches and even "pushed" Hearns to the canvas once. But make no mistake about it, this fight was nothing more than extending Tommy into the Championship rounds to prepare him for Leonard. - Finally, Hearns' boxing ability...up to this point, only those close to Tommy knew that he had been an amazing boxer long before he filled out physically (and it's strange to say that he "filled out" while still being exceedingly thin at 147 lbs) and developing his huge right hand. What I've always loved about Hearns was his ability to retreat from "Hitman" to boxer...watch his classic destruction of Wilfred Benitez to see what I'm referring to. This fight was actually a key conversion in Tommy's career...it introduced him on a National stage as a Champion on National TV (yes, he'd been on National TV many times previously, but not nearly as publicized as this fight) and promptly showed an ability that most folks didn't realize that he had. I remember, vividly, watching this and thinking that here was a master boxer at such a young age (the same as me!!). The only unknown at this point in his career was his ability to take a punch from a high-class fighter and unfortunately for us Hearns fans, we've seen the outcome of that.

Hi sir, I enjoyed reading feedback. Hearns is my inspiration in boxing, I learn a lot from him. I plan to be pro. His fights are remarkable to study boxing. To me, the weak point of Hitman was his legs, you can see in this fight he lost balance many times, which did not necessarly made a problem here, but it testifies that his lack of strenght and enurance in legs. In his fight against Benitez, which is to me his top performance, we can see his legs are in much better condition, he uses footwork the entire fight and delivers a perfect, astonishing performance. To me, this Hearns was unbeatable. I can relate to this cause i approximately have the same body than Heanrs, long and thin, i have less wide shoulders so a slightly shorter range, that annoys me less me to fight on the inside. I have an extremely natural low body fat percentage, which is the same advantages had Heanrs all along his welter, super welter and middleweights fights, being sharp and powerful even with such a low fat percentage, cause it's our natural body condition. But i have the same thin natural legs than Hearns, and it creates the same default; so since a year I'm working hard on my legs, i need more and more work, but itt's getting better, especially in flexibility of leg movement, it's much smoother. I still don't have enough muscle endurance thought, and this can make a huge difference on late rounds. I think, Heanrs has the best punching technique i've ever seen, his fists are sharp as blades. My coach always said, if Hearns's coaches taught him from the begining to focus on training his legs, and taught him about footwork just as he uses in Benitez fight, then he would be untouchable. For this reason I believe Benitez-Hearns fight is one of the greatest fight in boxing history, it's a real encyclopedia. Edit : Tommy's footwork in round 6 is what i'm talking about, astonishing, devastating, much better control of the distance, giving his opponenent a very hard time to follow and focus. So Hearns perfectly know hpow tu use it, it's just too bad he didn't do it much more often, and i strongly believe it's due to his thin legs.

@@salvatormundi5184 Hi, great to see a Hearns fan. From the sound of it, you're still very young so you didn't get to see Tommy fight live like I did. You really missed a Master at work, my man. Yeah, I think it was his legs but it more had to do with his moving up in weight "unnaturally," if I can be so blunt...back then the Kronk gym and the general public really wanted to see him win multiple crowns and I always hated that they moved him up so fast. IMHO, he still wasn't a natural Middleweight even when he fought Hagler and his later fights showed the results of this unnatural movement...the Kinchen fight which he probably lost, the Barkley fights which were a joke...etc. Even when he won the Light-Heavy-weight title against Andries, he looked unnatural. Anyway, keep going my friend...I too took up boxing because of Tommy...I was a 6'8" Light Heavy Weight, fighting at 175 lbs for 18 fights. Just like you, I had ultra-thin legs but I DID have a good right hand (at the Light Heavyweight rank) and enjoyed fighting like Hearns. Unfortunately, when I reached 21 years of age, I couldn't make 175 lbs anymore and my next classification was Cruiserweight, 190 lbs. My walking around weight was only 185 lbs so I was suddenly fighting Heavyweights coming down to 190 lbs. What a difference! But I kept watyching Hearns and fights like this Shields encounter and the Benitez fight to hone my boxing skills and it helped me at Cruiserweight when I couldn't land the right hand and knock guys out. Anyway, I had to stop because my skin became so cut (I'm white) and scarred that I'd start bleeding after just getting hit with a jab. So keep going Rocky, good luck man!

thomas moody Thank you for your experience sharing, that’s awesome to read that. You’re right, I just turned 23; with the pandemic I couldn’t start my « pro career » yet, but I can’t wait. Your thought on Hearns moving wait too fast is very interesting and enlightens my understanding of his career. Wow, it must have been quite a mess when you had to move up to cruiserweight. Was losing weight too difficult or impossible to make with your body ? I also have a good long range right hand that I learned from Tommy, but I mostly can land it because of my lead hand, which I strongly believe Tommy Hearns had THE best jab in boxing history. And I use a lot of jab as well, as keeping pressure or using lead hook, which ko’d some sparring partner as well. Actually, in this era, every fighter I’m thinking of had a thunderous left/lead hook, a sniping right hand, and a snake-like jab. Even watching S.R. Robinson, that man punches were thunders, and I love that feeling. I apologize for my English. Btw I’m Rocky I changed the pseudo.

15:48 Their left feet connected while Hearns right foot simultaneously slipped badly. The punch from Shields was a tap. An arm punch, no torque.

Why was Shields so passive? He could use more often his nice jab. He didn't try to get closer with Hearns. It looks like he didn't try to win.

Shields was tall for a welter, but his reach was no better than Cuevas. (70 inch vs Hearns 78)

Shields was a heck of a fighter. He ended up one generation too early with Ray Leonard, Hearns, Benitez, Duran out there. If Shields was in the Donald Curry, Marlon Starling generation he would have done much better....even win a title.

Come on Howard, the right that "dropped" Hearns was between his shoulder blades Lol!.......Don't think that scores a knock down..........Hearns at Welterweight and Super Welterweight was as good as it gets in Boxing history and he was a great World Champion all the way up to Light heavyweight.

Technically and tactical, there was nothing shifts couldn't do different, what it was was he's lack of explosive and strength.

WOW!!! What a chin, aka "beard", Shields had. Often times, some fighters who are not hard punchers, or are feather fisted, are the ones with the granite chins. Winky Wright was a prime example, years later, at 154 ibs, in his dominant victories over boxer-punchers, Shane Mosely, and, dynamite fisted, Felix Trinidad. Conversely the exact opposite can occur, where power punchers like Terry Norris, Vincent Pettway, and Roy Jones Jr. have weak, or "crystal" chins. Sometimes all the elements like up properly and you get a boxer who possesses both explosive power and an iron-granite chin like the great Marvelous Marvin Hagler, and "Iron" Mike Tyson. Check it Out! Ciao!!!

Shields made hearns miss a lot. There was a round where shields frustrated the hell out of hearns. And most of shields cuts came from headbutts.
