One of the greatest Light-Heavyweights of all time! Obviously this highlight was difficult to make due to lack of footage, it would have been much longer if more was available.

Loughran was known to have such a high level of ring awareness that he would end many rounds right by his own corner, leaving the opposing fighter to walk across the ring to their own corner, round after round. Truly an all time great, his bout with Gene Tunney was a no contest that sportswriters were split on which fighter won, as Loughran was seen to have outboxed Gene, but Tunney was seen to have done more damage.

He looks like James Corbett mixed with a lil gene Tunney and Larry Holmes. That's boxing 😍😍👌🏾

Thanks for your priceless work, haNZAgod! When someone wants to know about Harry Greb's opponents, Tommy Loughran is one of the ones I point them to.

A beautiful fighter. The definition of an educated left hand and great footwork. Beat several Hall of Famers. Just an All Time Great!

no high guard necessary for this boy. What a master of range and timing. Seems like an impossible style by today's standards.

@@jayf4357 👍Also seems like natural reflexes combined with a ton of competitive ring experience. Something that would be nearly impossible to develop off sparring and 1-2 fights a year, like today's fighters.

You said it yourself - low hands, but a master of range & timing, due to a ton of competitive experience. A lot of them fought like that.
@JoshSmith222
@JoshSmith222 Жыл бұрын
@@kufujitsu Agreed. The loose guard requires tight reflexes and exert timing, but broadens the focal area of the opponent and creates countering and offensive opportunities in the process. Some observers think it's a flaw in the old timers, but I see it as an indication of technically mastery - and it's proven in the case of ATG's like Tommy. I read one post that said Sugar Ray Robinson didn't KNOW the hight guard - He made it through decades of fighting at the elite level without ever being truly stopped, so he obviously had his defense in check. The high guard was just generally to limiting for his style and he had the timing, range control, bob, weave, clinching etc. down to the point where it was rarely needed - certainly not something to hide behind for extended periods.

@@JoshSmith222 Prime Ali, Carlos Monzon, Gene Tunney, Tony Ganzoneri, Benny Leonard - They all had a low guard, but it was always from long range. When their opponent got closer, it was like a magnet that brought their gloves up. They also knew how take away their opponents' punching room with their lead shoulder, kept their feet moving to offset their opponent, used upper body movement to avoid shots & create room for their own offense. The closest in style to those guys these days seems to be Regis Prograis. He does it the same way, hands down at long range, then his gloves seem to go up automatically as his opponent gets closer. He must have worked really hard in the gym to get the knack of fighting that way.

HanZA great video as always! One of my favorite video editors on here. Not as flashy as some, but that's okay because you still produce great quality videos and you pump out a video about as often as Harry Greb fought. I saw your comment and I was just about to say I imagine this video was tough to do considering the extremely limited amount of footage on Loughran's end.
