Guitar WISDOM is a great theme for you! You take lessons from guitar and apply them to all of life. I love how you circled back to the Beatles who you loved when you were young and now you are diving in so much deeper and learning new things from songs you loved back then. Tomo This is such a great video . Filled with so much wisdom and questions ( for self reflection) I need to spend more time reflecting upon my influences…I’m 69 and thinking about my first musical influence … the Beatles … I fondly remember going with my Dad to buy my first album “ Meet the Beatles “ my Dad who has passed always encouraged me to enjoy music . Your questions made me pause and realize how much music has enriched and have added magic to my life . Sadly lately I’ve lost that magic part of my life. Today I’ve decided to spend more time listening to music and less time surfing the internet. I’m a member of guitar wisdom and starting today I’ve promised myself to spend at least 10 minutes a day ( hopefully more 🎶). Learning and listening to music and like you spend time writing music . Any new songwriting lesson on KZfaq or Guitar Wisdom would be appreciated. Thank you Tomo for helping an older guitarist and songwriter 😊 get back to music . And yes I too am so thankful for my parents for giving me so much love and support in life ❤. We are blessed men. Many Thanks🙏 Best Frank

Definitely you. I have shared your motto to many people and they all love it. The greatest thing about it is that it works for anyone, even for none-musicians😊 I used to beat myself up, hide and just practice home without sharing my music in public. However, I’ve been going to many jams and stuff now because I’m always telling myself “don’t worry, don’t compare, don’t expect too fast and kind to yourself”. Also, I believe rhythm guitar skill is very important, so I love your rhythm guitar practice method. I feel like I was able to improve my rhymes guitar skills because of that❤ Thank you🙏❤️

You've been a huge influence to me Tomo. Throughout the years there have been many musicians that inspired me and given me something to strive for, but I've always had great anxiety about playing at a certain level or creating something original which eventually drove me to distance myself from playing for years. Your outlook toward life and music has given me a real second life as a musician and I've been taking up piano and guitar again with more humility as well as enthusiasm. I always return to the words on your t-shirt as I learn to enjoy the process and let go of the pressure that we tend to put on ourselves. There's no joy like making music together!

I actually thought I'd see the Ventures in the list. I thought they're quite popular in Japan. My dad had a few of their live in Japan cassettes. The Ventures, The Shadows and The Beatles are what really got me to love the guitar. As someone who mainly plays rhythm, George Harrison's style of combining rhythm and lead in Here Comes the Sun was so mind-blowing to me. Both Bruce Welsh and Don Wilson are such amazing rhythm guitarists.

My biggest influence, looking back, was my step-father. He started playing the guitar at 60, after we saw Mississippi John Hurt at a folk festival. He played into his 90s. He lived Tomo's wisdom. I later realized it was because he was a Stoic. He kept a copy of Epictetus in his dresser drawer. It took me years to understand its meaning. My own Earth, Wind & Fire experience was Cream, sitting in the 5th row, no idea what I was seeing or hearing. I was in 11th grade. I had to listen to Wheels of Fire to appreciate it. I can't list my influences chronologically because I listened to too many different kinds of music. In my pantheon the top 3 are Louis Armstrong, Muddy Waters, and Dylan. But Miles Davis followed by Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins changed my attitude. As a trumpet player, Miles played in a way I'd never thought possible. Exploring jazz I realized you could play the same instrument in virtually completely different ways. Young and Hawkins blew me away. It seems crazy that having seen Hendrix, I needed Miles to lead the way. But was a good trumpet player and a mediocre guitar player. I knew what Miles was doing, I was only guessing with Jimi. My playing journey led from the trumpet - the only instrument I learned the standard way and performed with - through toying with the guitar, harmonica and banjo for a long time. During the pandemic I decided to focus on music. It was then I narrowed down my instrument to the electric guitar and my "influences" to 5: Clapton, Hendrix, Garcia, and John Mayer. I've seen the first three. Though Dylan is probably my ultimate influence, for the guitar I'd add Jimmy Page. Though I bought the first album when it came out, I never became a big Led Zeppelin fan. And I'm not interested in playing their music, with a few exceptions. But I admire Page enormously, for his playing and overall creativity. As with Jack White also. While all of these people have enriched my life, I can't say they changed it. Not in the way that Tomo has, by making me realize what was right in front of my eyes, but had gone unrecognized. Thank you, Tomo.

Back in my teen, I was listening to J-Rock/Visual Kei bands like X-Japan, L'Arc~en~Ciel, or Luna Sea. It's probably half stage appearance, half guitar to me. I ended up learning many songs of their, especially L'Arc and Luna Sea. After that, at one point I listen to a lot of Tommy Emmanuel (and a little bit of Chet Atkins). I tried to mimic him of course, but that's proved to be too difficult. Also I was listening to bands like T-Square or Casiopea a lot. Maybe some of Trix as well. They are some of my influences. Of course I listen to all kind of bands, and can't list them all. Those above are what I keep getting back to from time to time. I learn some of their music and use some of it in my playing too. But I don't really copy them to the exact note, which I think I should do. I don't study their music that much, only play with my level of understanding I guess. I'm a bad student, who's too lazy to do their homework :).

The five artists I most wish I could play like: Mississippi John Hurt Nick Drake Richard Thompson Steve Cropper Eddie Hazel (It kills me to leave the Rev. Gary Davis, Curtis Mayfield, and George Harrison off this list) John Hurt is probably the one I've tried hardest to learn. Richard Thompson is the guitarist I most wish I could emulate, and anyone else wouldn't be close -- he may not be the best at any specific thing, but he's very very good at seemingly everything, and I really envy that. But like everything else, I haven't made the progress I want because my life is so chaotic.

@@TomoFujitaMusic What I like the most about George Harrison is that he creates a space I feel completely immersed in. It's the same way I feel with Nick Drake or (on piano) Bill Evans -- just the feeling of being in a different world and totally immersed in it. My influences are "out" players like john scofield, pat martino, allan holdsworth,... I even studied mr. martino's method but decided i needed to learn all of the jazz stuff first instead of just playing minor scales all the time... though I tend to attempt his phrashing and switch positions using minor third "staircases" like he does. Scofield is the coolest non-shreddy cat for me (he's good friend with pat metheny too so i guess they learned off each other). Holdsworth stuff belongs to the cosmic realm which i can only observe and dare not imitating.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on influences throughout Japanese music history. Most people seem to agree that artists like Tatsuro Yamashita, YMO, or Joe Hisaishi have a "Japanese style", but it's hard to put your finger on why. Are there some common elements that "influenced" them?

I'm just a little older than Tomo and have a few similar influences. However, I think there were albums that were milestones. I wore out the Deep Purple live album Made in Japan. And there were specific songs that really made me want to play guitar and music in general from The Edgar Winter Group (Freeride, Frankenstein). So it's hard to narrow it down to five, because there was so much going on in the early 70s, from BTO to Pink Floyd to Heart and Boston and Frampton, and all the usual suspects. I think the one band that influenced my approach music was Yes, and to a lesser extent, Rush. I overthink things and that group of people made some "very complex music for overthinkers". Yes' live album introduced me to the Firebird Suite which I still like to this day. And Rick Wakeman's keyboard solo on their still blows me away. I learned a lot of chords trying to figure out Yessongs, including Mood for a Day! One other classical thing that I really like is Ravel's Bolero for the construction of melody. It seems like a story and the voices and hypnotic repetition is, well, hypnotizing! And Keith Emerson's take on Copeland's Hoedown was very inspiring... goosebumps! I liked the ELP acoustic songs a lot, too. Much later I came to the "old english guys" like Jeff Beck, long after they had established their reputations. He is the most fun player to watch for me nowadays. And all that led me back to Hendrix. And these days, I really like how Greg Koch fuses real grown-up chords and harmony with some of the old classic rock vibes to make complex rock that still rocks very organically. And he's a great interpreter of Hendrix, Clapton, and the original old blues guys, as well. I'd like to steal some of that way of songwriting, because, at heart, I'm really just an old rocker. When I hear Tomo play the blues, I immediately think of B.B. King. So that influence is very strong. I don't really hear much influences when I listen back to my own playing. I still sound like a copycat, mostly. I do enjoy clean-ish noodling with a phaser / tremolo and reverb, just to search for small pretty sounds. I don't know from who or where I might've picked that up.

A lot of people love to add overdrive, reverb, delay etc so in order to make my own tone, I avoided those! When I teach at Berklee... I rarely use reverb. Maybe one lesson out of 16 lessons. I use reverb when I show my picking dynamics not to show reverb!
@MrBradWi

@@TomoFujitaMusic I was addicted to overdrive and fuzz in my youth, but it seems like the notes don't have enough air to breathe. Very compressed or something. Notes sustain and don't sing. Allan Holdsworth figured out how to get his tone to sing and sustain without sounding like a buzz saw. I've never had any luck, so I player cleaner nowadays, for simplicity.... although I do push the fun switch once in a while just for old time's sake!
