At first I thought the idea is ridiculous and pointless. With a bit of thought, though, I think real-world architects building for the Metaverse is perfectly fine, and even a great idea. Like you said, they get to try out designs that could never work in reality without some significant leaps in technology, if at all. On the idea of the Metaverse as a whole (advertising included) how many millions of people play immersive computer games and meet up in them with their friends? Advertising has been included in games for as long as I've been playing them (the WipEout franchise comes to mind, advertising Kappa and other sponsors). How many millions of people watch eSport tournaments? That's not all that different to watching virtual Man City play a virtual game. I spend real money on virtual assets in games every so often, so if a big architect practice like ZHA was to design a bespoke building that was ground-breaking, I can see people wanting the prestige of owning that. The one thing I have against the Metaverse, is if things that happen within it start to affect peoples' lives in the real world.

I can understand the translatable value of an Architect's real world skills into the Metaverse. What I can't understand is why people are assuming that the value of a limited resource like prime real estate, will translate over to the value of virtual property. It's the internet....The real estate is unlimited. However, I guess what you're paying for is actually the point of congregation, and assuming that Facebook is going to have the best virtual city. Idk why though.

My issue is that yes you have unlimited freedom in building in the metaverse but it still has no application to the real world if you’re ignoring real world laws. What’s the point then other then to make quick money off virtual reality
@rookstun
@rookstun 2 жыл бұрын
@@supercadet111 The same way video games have done it. If it's comfortable to be or explore in, then it will grow in value. Unlimited real estate is a bit of a meme term too. There will always be server size limits, performance optimizations, co-op benefits and more. Bad levels don't get traction. Bad metaverse estates won't either.

The biggest dislike I have over it is that this isn't new. What's new is that it's now big-tech corporate-based and costs millions. Essentially ALL other AR and VR worlds have existed for decades, and the new corporatism and money all around it is just... Gross. Everyone calls it a "new world" and "new idea", but it's not at all new -- the only new part is the domination of corporations in it. Heck, even Minecraft is a "metaverse" and everything in this video could be done in there too... minus the millions of dollars spent on a virtual world with literally infinite space and teleportation capability.

Metaverse TLDR: clueless corporations attempting to turn 3D spaces into content and service delivery platforms. It was dumb in the 90's, and it is dumb now. The thing that is really, REALLY important to understand about Metaverse, is that is discards all of the lessons that developers of virtual worlds have learned over the past few decades. Absolutely nothing about it is new, and those of us who've been around virtual spaces are shaking our heads as past mistakes are repeated with bigger budgets and more fanciful PR animations. Like we're used to from techbros, they don't actually understand virtual worlds as much as they like to pretend, because they don't understand what people like them for, and equally what they *don't* like them for. People like virtual worlds when they are a mix of socializing and expressing your creative side. What this means is that it attracts a crowd of people who enjoy making their own things and showing them off. It attracts people who, for some reason or another, lack functional community spaces in the real world. And it attracts people who want to engage in virtual relationships to break the boundaries of distance. What virtual worlds don't do well AT ALL is everything else that these clueless techbros try to pile on top of it. And the reason for that is pretty damn simple: every other usecase has too many hoops to jump through just to get an experience that is already solved by far simpler products, and they lack the social dimension that make virtual worlds worth participating in. Digital museums? It's called Wikipedia. Education? Skillshare and a plethora of others have that covered. Documentaries and filmmaking? How many streaming services are we at yet? Anything business related? Online shopping already has it nailed. Critically, non of these usecases have monetization schemes or special advantages that are somehow helped or created by being in a 3D space with a virtual avatar. If anything, they just cost money and make for an inferior, frustrating user experience compared to a normal website. It's been done, and it's been a massive flop each and every time some doe-eyed executive attempted it. Virtual worlds are social and creative outlets, not content platforms. If the 'Metaverse' sticks at all, expect it to resemble something more akin to Second Life, and for all of these "virtual urbanism design firms" to quietly go out of business in just a few years time when Facebook et al. finally get the message that there's no solid usecase and subsequently stop subsidizing the whole thing altogether.

The problem that I see with the conclusion is that all these things, architects building virtual spaces, modeling cities to analyze traffic, etc. is already possible without the notion of a "metaverse." What a supposed metaverse does, at least in relation to crypto and the blockchain, is introduce scarcity. And it raises the question for me, what benefit is there to a meta object other than a status symbol? Right now, I buy digital assets to be used in games that I play. But what use is there for me buying a house in a supposed metaverse? Status? The feeling that I own something someone else doesn't? To me, it just seems like speculation, all the way down.

So basically while the game environment artist were busy creating rich and immersive worlds that keep players engaged for hours, the real-world architects decided that partnering with crypto-bros for big money and cheap-lookign voxel graphics was a good idea. Let's be honest, any building in Withcer 3 looks better than this metaverse-crap designed by "real" architects. And if they really wanted to show what's possible to create without real-world constraints then they could ask some game or film studious to collaborate 🤷‍♂️

Mixed reality spaces will open up interesting opportunities for architecture and game design to meet. However, it will not likely be a form that emulates what we would see in the physical world. Structures in a digital world don't need to account for physics, human mobility, utilities, weathering, soundproofing, etc and would have different drivers of their design. Also the idea that infinite digital land being sold as a finite commodity is idiotic

@@ambeegaming76 it's an interesting thought, but technically that isn't how servers work. @@mattblack6736 one of the primary benefits of the internet as it was conceived, and as it operates largely to this very day - is that digital scarcity does not exist. There’s not a limited number of times a video can be viewed, a limited number of times an article can be read, or a limited number of times a game can be downloaded. Creating that scarcity serves *only* to drive up prices and make more profit, overwhelmingly for companies that already make more than enough. If you don’t disagree with digital scarcity, then fundamentally you are against the open internet as it has always been, and would change it in the pursuit of profit. That to me, makes you an idiot.

@@mattblack6736 Imagine that someone creates a digital item. It is unique and is kept unique by an NFT. Someone then comes along and makes an exact replica of it except for the NFT. What was the value of the NFT? Only by enforcing digital scarity, does it have any real value. So we have a digital world that plans to enforce digital scarcity as a huge part of its business model. Interesting and definitely hinting at bad business practices to come. What they are trying to sell is a giant open world game full of mini games and experiences. Except that much of the content is paid for at the start and expensive, so everyone is looking to make their money back. So what we will get is a world full of stuff to buy and adverts. The idea could be great, but not if they try to make big profits. If they can be patient and enforce quality content, make it free to use and try to make their money on VR headset sales instead of on the platform, it could be great. I am not that optimistic at this point as they are already trying to make a profit from selling digital plots of land when there is no reason for those plots to hold value except for selling an idea of what the future could be. They are preordering games.

at the end, the guy is really describing augmented reality instead of virtual reality. vr is naturally individualistic because only one person can have a vr headset while everyone watches but an ar headset worn by multiple people would allow multiple people to interact with a virtual world while still interacting with the physical world socially. Apple has said that ar will be better than vr and they have examples of how ar works with some apps they've helped develop. Besides this, the metaverse and nfts are currently something that people can make some money from because of the hype surrounding it and the people that are skeptical and hate on it are just people that are losing out on a new type of revenue even if that revenue comes from exploiting people who are buying into the hype. I like that you pointed out how advancements in the metaverse can help with architecture and construction in the physical world. It's all very exciting to learn about and i'm glad your video makes it easier to understand for people who are just learning about this and for people who may be skeptical and ignorant to learning about it.

So far all the metaverse games I have seen take place on Earth. What about space? I would love to live in the USS Voyager. Buy a quarters with a view of outer space. Customize your personal quarters with posters, trophies, and statues. Sit on the bridge. Play games in the holodeck. Talk with friends in the bar. Explore the warp core. Instead of selling the game itself, they could sell rooms inside the ship. You pay $10 for an enlisted room. $20 for an officers room. $60 for a captain's room. Decorate the room. You could also invite friends to hang out in your room or hang out in their room. Just like selling cruise ship rooms.

There's a Japanese anime called SwordArt Online. The concept is basically a virtual headset that intercepts with neurotransmitters from your brain, thus providing perfect virtual reality immersion. The plot involves the first set of users being held hostage in the virtual world, while their bodies wither away in the physical world though.😅

We have been doing this for over 20 years now. People were buying and selling real estate on Ultima Online for real money even back then. Loads of internet denizens have been living double lives in places like Second Life and MMORPGS since the internet was invented. I don't get why any of this is considered "new and cutting edge". Hell, 99% of the avatars I've seen are absolute garbage that look like they were designed by a corporate drone. There is nothing appealing looking about any of it. You don't need an architect to design a building in a video game, you need an artist. Maybe I'm just missing the point, but this just looks like the next crypto-bro pyramid scheme. META might bring on a sort of linkedin audience, but if stuff like VRchat is any indication, no one is going to walk around looking like a bland fisher-price looking human in a virtual world that just looks like they cloned real life.

I don't understand why these people just seem to want to recreate existing architectural motifs. In the metaverse (hate that word) there are no physical limits, you could do all kinds of things... For instance, picture a house where the two main levels are all in one space, but one is oriented to the floor and the other is on the ceiling, so that you could look up and see another upside-down floor where the people are looking up at you. This is the kind of real innovation the virtual world offers. You could have a house where the different rooms were all in wildly different sectors of the virtual world, connected by doorways that are effectively portals... The possibilities are endless once you let go of preconceived notions of architecture, which after all are mostly dictated by physical laws that would no longer necessarily apply.

Great overview on Architecture & design in / for the metaverse @Tomorrow's Build, thanks. I share your position and many of your views. You said it several times no matter what we think of it, "it's happening". From my exploration I found the same and it's because every person has their own values and it is no less valid just because some of us can't understand it. Basically, what is real for me IS real, the same way what is real for anyone else IS real too. IMO Architect & Designers who ignore this will be at a loss, especially those that are planning / need to still practice 5+ years from now. "Metaverse" is just a new word for multiple virtual worlds that has been with / around us for decades via digital games. Yes, a lot of new tech like blockchain, digital currencies and the culture of a decentralized ecosystem / world is now part of the story. And I absolutely like that this brings a lot of opportunities to many people that would otherwise not exist. Freedom to create design / experiences / entire worlds and even new lives for many. And why should this upset some people that this is monetized? The gaming world has been doing it since day 1. The "Metaverse" that is now evolving are making the idea of virtual / digital worlds a mainstream reality. As an Architect already working in building digitization and digital twins, I see a real future for any design professional in the "metaverse". Built environments have been an integral part of computer / mobile device / internet / VR games. There-in already lies a connection with the real world. Businesses in the physical world has just up to now ignored the fact that they miss out on opportunities in the virtual worlds. In fact, we are already working on ways to bring digital twin integration with metaverse platforms. For those that don't know: "digital twin" are digital versions of the real world assets that is (here's the key) bi-directionally connected to that real world asset. So with this digital twin integrated in the metaverse environment, it would be possible to work & live while in the / a metaverse and monitor & control a real world asset. On the flip side, those from the gaming world will in turn also gain new opportunities to collaborate on integrating real world projects in this digital realm. The future is integrated & digital. 🤩

We already interact directly less often with others because of the internet … this isn’t news … there have been ongoing issues regarding lack of real life relationships, growing loneliness, suicides and now, somehow - we believe that MORE time online will create real honest relationships? Does anyone else see the folly?
