Didn't you know John Deere are bringing out a hovercraft 😉 But damn it certainly puts things in perspective seeing all of that, this time last year we were applying NPK but I don't think we will be doing so for a fair while yet as it is wet enough here and we don't have fields that wet, muddy gloop yes, swimming no.

Great approach! Anyone watching this can learn something from this. Building building building, We need more education as to how this affects everyone! These is a better answer. There seem to be a lot of empty buildings in every larger country. Land is SO important! Good job Tom.

Tom can you mark on the banks with a coloured stake or stick to show where the drains are so both you and the guy cleaning the ditch knows where they are and can check of they are clear and running. Only asking as I clean ditches out for a living and you would be surprised how many farmers do this to ensure their drains dont get damaged and they can find them to inspect them.

@@judithp8552 - pumps require lots of energy - once again, more consumption! The Dutch also widen drains, 'make room for the river', slows things down so less erosion.

There was an experiment done by a farm collective in Pontbren, Mid Wales, where they planted small shelter belts of Hazel trees ( I think) within the fields. The roots from the trees opened up the soil for quite a large area beyond the perimeter of the shelter belt thus allowing far greater infiltration (up to x67 ) of water below the poached layer of top soil and into the more permeable layer below. The main effect was reduced flooding in that area but they also saw an increase in grass yield and as a bonus the Hazel was coppiced and chipped to make bedding for the cattle while they were in the sheds in Winter.

Just a though from across the big pond, try digging the ditch 4' deeper and put the mud on the banks and smooth the banks and shoot 4" of gunnite concrete on the banks and install all new drain outlets to the new ditch and let it rain!! imho.

That was so much fun to watch! And it also gave a far better perspective of the drainage issues you spoke about in an earlier video, I think you should send this to Environmental agency, as the pen pushers in charge will have no idea about those bank issues. And yes please do another video with your Dad about the pumping stations etc, as this is a side to farming that many of us don't even think about. Well done and thank you for the entertainment :)

We were waiting for the soaking Tom lol... At home we mark a white strip on a fence post to indicate where a land drain enters a ditch. makes it easy to find if needed. When the water level drops it an idea to mark the outlet up. It will also help the EA contractors identify the drains position and no excuse for digging them out or covering them. It looks like the EA will have a lot of work fixing the bank erosion. another great video . top job as always .

you should have a map of the drains on your farm from when they were layed you can also buy die to see if the drains are working but I notice the puddles in the field are the same level as the ditch

I noticed how the trees are holding the banks together on one side, and on the complete opposite where there is none, it's all falling in, maybe it's time to plant trees that has good rooting structure. Get together with your neighbour's and buy in bulk, and look for a small grant from the E.P.A to help you out. And the shelter it will provide will be great for the cattle. The long term benefits will out way the cost with out question.

You should paint those fence post so u know right where the drains are. We mark all of ours to make sure they stay clear.

Good vid, And very informative it’s been a big issue for years with New housing and Developments effecting drains / Farms fealds and established Housing. I think there should be more investment into drainage also looking at places like US at there Drains and Storm Drainage maybe an idea. Enjoying the channel keep up the Graft👍👍👍

The ditch getting wider but shallower isn't going to help anyone so some thing really needs to be done about that erosion. Come the summer you probably won't need a jetski and will be able to paddle down in your wellies! :)

“Hello am I still pretty??” 🤣🤣🤣 On a serious note I know exactly what you’re talking about but on a city scape because San Antonio Texas USA has major floods in 1998 and 2002 and we have done major overhauls in our drainage systems because it was so bad. Some flood plains where home were built were bought out and torn down because of the hazard but mostly overhauls to the drains system.
