In this video perfect water parameters are discussed. Basic acceptable reef parameters of PH 8.0-8.2, Phosphate 0.03- 0.15ppm, Alkalinity of 7DKH - 12DKH and Nitrate 0-30ppm keep a nano reef stable. The video explains 6 elements to use in keeping perfect parameters. Water change, protein skimming, kalkwasser, 2 part dosing, Bio load, and refugium all play a role in keeping quality water stability, and keep perfect reef tank parameters.

Amazing ,can I cycle live rock in tank?and I have a 20 gallon tank and I wanna add hard coral and maxima clams, would I need to install a calcium reactor?or part two dosing would be good?
@TOMReefer
@TOMReefer Жыл бұрын
Hi Nandun, yes, just make sure it’s already cycled live rock. If not you will have to let it cycle due to die off from the live rock. Also, don’t add any coral or clams until you test the water for good parameters. And 2 part dosing is fine for a 20 gallon tank.

Really awesome information you gave, but I have one question. Do you think a refugium would be good in a tank with soft corals? Or would the refugium just take all the nutrients from the corals?
@TOMReefer
@TOMReefer 2 жыл бұрын
HiChallenger, it depends, I usually wait until I see nitrate and phosphate in my water. Or, you can feed more heavily. Algae will grow in your tank regardless of the amount of nitrate and phosphate you have in it. Better that it possibly grow in a refugium then in your main display. I would wait to see if I had some nitrate and phosphate 1st. Refugium‘s also do other things not just lower nitrate and phosphate I have a video on that also. 👍🏻😊

Hey Tom. I am new to reefing. You had mentioned 2 part dosing. What exactly are you dosing?
@TOMReefer
@TOMReefer 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Raymond, thanks for watching. I dose a product called C Balance. It’s Calcium and Alkalinity. I have an older video on how to dose. Look in my PARAMETERS playlist. Good luck on your new reefing experience! Thanks again.

Do you need two part dosing & Kalk to maintain levels ?
@TOMReefer
@TOMReefer 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Jose, I wouldn’t say you “need to” but kalkwasser in your make up water keeps ph up and can help protein skimmer function, as well as precipitate phosphate. If your calc. and Alk. are at decent values, then adding only a small amount of kalkwasser in your make up water would be necessary. Kalkwasser just adds a few more benefits that 2 part doesn’t. Adding kalkwasser can also help if you have a large coral load that’s using up the calcium the 2 part is providing. 😊👍🏻

hello greetings from Philippines! my friends told me that 10 gallons nano reef tank is hard to maintain water parameters as a beginner they told me to go with atleast 50 gallons tank which is better for maintaining parameters is this true?
@TOMReefer
@TOMReefer 4 жыл бұрын
Hi KenTech41! Greetings! Thanks for watching. In my experience, stable parameters occur when you have consistent maintenance regardless of the size of your tank. If you look at my tanks 20 and 5 gallons I keep both stable enough to keep most corals that I would like. The key to stable parameters in small tanks is consistent weekly water changes of at least 20%. This keeps your calcium and alkalinity, ph, quite stable which is most important. Check out my other videos, I explain. Thanks again!

So I need to dose and use kalkwasser in my 28 gal nano? The thing is I only add 4 cups of water every 3 to 5 days with my tank hood it loses very little water. Can you recommend a video on how to use 2 part dosing?

Hi Dave, I wouldn’t recommend a solid or glass lid for your tank. Not enough oxygen exchange. And no, you don’t need to do both 2 part and kalkwasser. Look in my playlist Maintenance you should find a video on 2 part dosing. 👍🏻

I am hoping that you might shed some light on a problem I am having. I have a 13.5 g nano (7.5 with the rock) tank that has been running for over a year (around 18 months). Up until about a month ago it seemed that all was well. I was doing 50% water changes weekly (every 5 to 7 days) Recently I have experienced a drop in KH (around 6). I also noted that my Magnesium is over 1500. I do not believe my tank is over stocked. I have one coral banned shrimp and a snowflake clown. I have a fair size colony of green star polyp, two small frags of montipora , hammer coral , ducan, a frag of tree coral and a frag of pipe organ. The the hammer wont even open up any more. I do not have a skimmer as there is little to no place for it and likewise a refugium seems unlikely as well due to space. I have never dosed the tank because I was told that with a small tank such as mine, water changes should be enough. I just checked and I have 0 nitrates and 0 phosphates. I was also recently advised that a 50% water change weekly was to aggressive and my last two were only 15%. Can you advise as to what else I might do??? I also recently switched from instant ocean reef crystals to tropic marin. I was told that that should help a great deal. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
@TOMReefer
@TOMReefer 10 ай бұрын
Hi Mike, 50% weekly is a bit much. This could be why the hammer is not opening. (50% can be a bit shocking for euphyllia) however the large water change would do just the opposite to your DKH. It would keep it higher, to whatever your salt mix was. I would start with the simplest, check your test kit that you’re using for DKH make sure that is working properly, and also test your freshly mixed saltwater to see what the Dkh is. In such a small tank with that much water change you should not have a low DKH. I would only change 10% weekly or 20% every other week.

@@TOMReefer Thanks Tom. I figured like you that maybe my test kit might be off. I bought 3. LOL. I have a the simple API kit for reef tanks, the Redsea kit for reefs which includes KH, calcium and Magnesium and finally I have the Salifert kits for those three items. I'm pretty confused. I cant seem to find any real cause. Its all been good for so long. The Hammer as been in the tank for 3 or 4 months and seemed to handle the water changes fairly well. These problems seem to start around 2 months ago. I'm at a loss. I'm not exactly new to reefing. but has been since the 80's so I have a lot to learn. Thanks so much for your quick reply. If you can think of anything else I'd be glad to hear. I love your vids. You clearly know how to reef. Thanks again man.

@@MrMovieguy12 DKH can potentially drop 1 point PER DAY (e.g. 8 to 7) depending on coral load, as mine does. So I disagree that large water changes would keep it higher, since it can get sucked up by the coral in such a small amount of time in an aquarium of your size. Dosing is essential and an auto-doser would be the key to finding the stability you're looking for.
