This is really helpful, I am struggling to decide what can be better for video shooting, I just started to learn to do all of that, and it is really hard to decide without really deep research when the budget is really low, videos like this, really helps.

I loved that you showed some portraits (which I do with sony cameras). I didnt find much difference in urban landscapes, but a lot in the final video, and in the shoots of rapid subjects. The comparison is very interesting, phones are clearly becoming excellent (in technical/software sense) cameras, but the big optical lenses with the ergonomics of a professional camera still deliver another kind of premium experience and results ( I don't know if those differences are only percieved by photographers or also by the general public).

Really well done comparison, it's quite cool to see the difference between the two for all of us who can't really test such things

Think a camera and a cellphone won't ever be able to truly compete till you can change Aperture. My first android phone was a galaxy s9 plus and absolutely loved it. On that phone you had two aperture options. This allows you to control several key factors. You can open it up and have very strong depth of field/ background blur and tons of light. Or very closed and small which makes everything in a picture crisp, but little light. Light usually isnt and issue trying to get exposure of your subject unless it's night time photography. Many improvements have been made to night time photography on phones though. Having a fixed aperture significantly holds the phone back of all the awesome potential packed in there. Light, which is what photography is capturing, is photographed in three processes: ISO, Shutter Speed, Aperture. Samsung trys to give you the aperture setting through EV, you can only manual change two of the three at a time because EV (Aperture) is permanently fixed. Through Samsungs software, they can by pass this need some through image processing. If adjustable apertures ever comes to a phone, traditional cameras will fade into history, that would be the final nail. Except for artists at that point haha. Tech needs to come a long way to get that hardware down to a compact form factor in a cell phone, it's getting close!

White balance is really the only difference I could see between the two, and that can be changed in pro mode or after-the-fact.

I have this phone, in this colour. Honestly? Moving from my S23 Ultra, I see minimal improvements. Screen is the best display ever, the anti-glare is amazing. In direct sunlight it's mad, fully readable without colour-shift. The 5X, 50MP lens works better than the old, 10x, 10MP in my opinion. 2 Months later, the cameras have improved for sure, but there is still work to be done. I will give Samsung props, they have been consistently pushing OS updates and security patches. Aprils came in on March 30tth. I've found Samsung have become one of the quickest to launch patches now, faster than even Pixels sometimes. Performance wise, oddly I felt the S23U was more fluid, but again this may just be animation choices and performance refinement needed in updates.

Excellent video Tom. As a keen amateur photographer, I’ve spent a lot of money on camera equipment over the years, but my DSLR equipment is ancient now in comparison to the latest iterations of cameras. It still captures motion blur images and it’s still easier to take photos of small, fast moving objects better than Smart phones, but that’s where the advantages end. My Samsung S22 Ultra takes clearer images from my old DSLR when it comes to landscapes, portraits, street photography. However I must admit I only review my photos on my 15” laptop and I don’t enlarge my images. I’d be interested to see how your photos stack up in comparison, if they’re enlarged into poster size images. What has also dissuaded me from walking around with a DSLR with large lenses is the reactions from the general public. A couple of years ago a family was walking past as I was taking landscape photos using; my DSLR with battery grip of the beautiful scenery in the Derbyshire Dales. I overheard the teenager telling his parents, “Oh look!, he’s using one of those big, old fashioned cameras to take photos”. I laughed to myself at the time, but as your excellent video proves, the general images captured for hobbyists level photographers from modern Smart phones are comparable to expensive semi pro, to pro level mirrorless cameras and lenses that cost thousands. Even I’m starting to think using a large DSLR style camera with ridiculously large lenses seem a little like walking around playing music on a tape deck from a ghetto blaster on your shoulder, whilst everyone around you are discreetly listening to their music via Bluetooth headphones connected to their Smart phones. I’ll never stop using my DSLR, but it’s purely when I feel like being artistic with my photography. I’ve stopped using it for capturing general images.

Phones really made a huge jump in photography and in some cases they really can beat DSLRs for let say (instagramable pics), but still can be seen huge software coverage on the photos. Nice video!

itll be so nice if samsung made their own DSLR full frame camera with the same hardware as the s24 , basically bit like they did in 2013 ? with the galaxy s4 zoom ( theyd had to partner with sony or cannon etc for the proper lens and sensors ,but have its s24 capabilities included , basically a smart camera

The fact we can compare a small rectangular blocks camera that's not just a camera but also does other stuff to a bigger block that only has one function is still mind-boggling to me.

This video reiterated for me what I used to maintain a decade ago that a mobile camera phone cannot be as good as an actual camera basically because of the variable lenses that can be used in the latter but all those thoughts had been kind of pushed into the background by all the noise that the marketing blitz around mobile phones made during the time.
