John Deere X320 How to replace the Drive Belt under the mower.

I used a Stens 265-312 belt from amazon for $27.00 the john deere p/n is M151277 its a 92 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch belt John Deere belt on amazon amzn.to/3woPczg (paid link)
• John Deere X320 how to... ----- this is the link I show you how to remove the mower deck
1. Jack the front end up
2. unbolt the steering arms from steering
3. remove old belt and check for wood in pulley
4. installed new belt over fan pulley and then below the fan pulley between the pulley and the case of the transmission.
5. install it over the engine pulley and then bellow the engine pulley onto the shaft of the engine.
6. then install it on rear fan pulley
7. then install it on the engine pulley there is just enough room to push it over the pulley
8. then install it onto the 2 idler pulleys in the middle of the tractor.
9. then install the spring for the idler or tensioner pulley.

Thanks for the video. I have had to replace this belt 2x on my X320 with 820 hours on it. Over time the belt stretches/wears so that it comes out of the front V-pulley (a design flaw in my opinion). Here are my written instructions which align pretty well with this video: - Tools: 10mm, 13mm, 17mm sockets; 15mm spanner wrench; shoe lace to remove traction spring. - Steps: Remove mower deck, push mower onto ramps, apply brake, use shoe lace to unhook traction spring, remove V-idler pulley (13mm socket), loosen/remove belt guide (M151787) near pulley (10mm socket), remove spring locking pin (M146729) from rod (M155671), loosen/remove tie rods (2x) at front wheel spindle (17mm socket with 15mm spanner wrench), route new belt. Final belt placement over back and front pulleys requires it to go over front pulley spindle but not on pulley, then over transmission pulley/fan, then onto front pulley spindle.

Great job ! Unless I find a way to hoist the front of my tractor straight up and secure it there, I ain't replacing mine..that's for sure. I hope you'll get yourself a couple of wooden blocks to place them under the tractor making sure it wasn't drop down on you.. Good luck and work safe!

Push brake first and use parking brake to hold it. That makes quite a bit of slack in the belt that makes getting it on pulleys easy. Mine would come off the front pulls sometimes when I’d coast to a stop after turning off key. Put back on many times before I was smart enough to do the parking brake. 😊

In addition to those helpful tips, I found in order to change the belt on my X320 I needed to do the following. 1. I had a U bracket that guided the belt that needed to be removed. Right side as you sit on the tractor. 2. You need to release the deck lift lock lever that was raised when the deck was removed in order to clear the belt from a flange. Once the belt is on don't forget to lock the lever in the up position so you can get the deck back on. 3. Have someone depress the brake pedal so you can easily slide the belt over the front top pulley.

@@bubblerings I think I can see where there could be a confusion and I edited my post. You push the brake pedal (I left out foot pedal) in order to slide the belt over the pulley. I also found that if no one is present, I pull the foot pedal forward and tie it off to the front axle which allows me to put the belt back on. Just make sure it's secure. You don't want to have your hand on the belt if it gives way or you will trap your hand between the belt and pulley. Have you cell phone by your side. 😁 I hope that helps. Sorry for the confusion.

@@bubblerings Ah, I see where I created a confusion. What I'm calling the clutch pedal is actually the brake pedal. It performs the same function. By depressing the brake pedal, it disengages the drive belt from the pulley system which gives slack to the belt so that you can slide the belt onto the top pulley. Sorry for the confusion and I have made the change in my original post. Thank you for questioning that as it will make it much clearer for others.

On my 2005 x320 there is also a belt keeper next to the engine pulley that the belt has to go to the inside if it goes to the out side it starts to ware the belt.

It looks like you forgot to set the parking brake. That will take the belt tensioner out of play and the belt will go on much easier. Hope that helps!

For the final step in removal I had to have the brake in the off position. It went well then. Be sure to get it in the guides properly. My model is an 2005 X300.

On my model 135, I have to disconnect the steering mechanism and pull the steering column up and out of the way to route the belt. I haven't started mine yet, my only option is to pay the dealer $250+ to do the job.

Instead of taking the spring off just engage your brake and that will give you enough slack to replace your belt with out taking off the spring

I would recommend just taking the whole seat and rear fender assembly off too. Then U can pull the tank, rear fan and pulleys as well. Then walk it back on at the rear. Also loosen the two idlers. On the X tractors it’s actually pretty easy and gives a bunch more work space. There is usually a lot of debris that can be cleaned off the mechanicals while ur in there

Found after struggling a bit and viewing a couple more vids that if you take the PTO clutch off, replacing the belt becomes much easier. With the PTO off, and the idlers/tensioners removed the belt slips off the front pulley easily and then you've loads of room to get it off the back. You do still have to pull the steering arms. Two clips retain the PTO electrical cable and then it plugs in up in the engine compartment. slip the cable under to the clutch assy, undo that big bolt on the engine crank and be carefull. On newer mowers the clutch slips right off, on my 5 year old a night with penetrating oil and a little pry bar from the top got it moving, couldn't get it to budge by hand. With all the finagling to get the path clear, the PTO is actually the easiest part. Both those idler/tensioner pulleys are just over 30 bucks together, one had bad bearings and the other been replaced before. Also, you can take the rear cover off back by the fan with just a couple 8mm bolts. I have big hands so any extra room I can free up helps as well. Your video got me to order the belt last year and my crazy schedual got me to this point where I could get to the belt swap. Had to use the snow blower twice this year, was really worried about getting back up the hill. Thanks for your effort, just thought I'd help out if I could.

How did you get it above the big round bar? I can’t figure it out! I get taking it off the steering rack but is there any other major bits to unbolt to get it in? I just can’t work out how it fits. At 6.49 you’re nearly pointing to the bar I mean

Please show where the spring attaches. You said the spring goes up here but don't show where it attaches. You show where the back attaches but not the front. Thank You. I have the X300, and can't figure where the front of the spring goes. It came off by itself so I'm not sure where it goes.

@@JustADad oh okay interesting. Mine wore thru one of the plastic ‘plastic’ pulleys I replaced the pulleys but never the belt. I wondered if I should. I will once I change the trans oil. Have you ever done that ?
