My mother tongue is Mizo. Spoken in the Northeast Indian state of "Mizoram". Our language is also tonal and the way u pronounce it makes a huge difference in the meaning.

This makes me feel proud to know this language, I would never have been able to otherwise learn it if I didn’t speak it natively😂😂😂

It's fascinating... and extremely difficult! Why couldn't they just invent different words?

Babies are able to learn tonal languages with no problem at all. It's only really a difficult to adult learners (those of whom speak a non-tonal language natively). A speaker of a tonal language could just as easily say, "how difficult English doesn't use tones. They have invent so many more longer words!"

It's also connected to musicality. When every sentence is almost sung, it should be easy to sing on key and vice versa.

@@HappyBeezerStudios I can't sing or recognise a single note. I wouldn't have a prayer. Kudos to all those who can.

Is there a good way to learn and get used to tones if you didn’t grow up with a to am language?
@vulgarlang
@vulgarlang Жыл бұрын
Likely the best way to learn tones is to start learning a tonal language. It's important to note that tonal languages are not like music: the pitch of the tones are not precise and the same all the times. They are relative to teach speaker's own vocal range and in comparing one syllable to the next. This means the exact pitch can vary quite a bit! Likely you need to start to getting a feel for these "relative" tones just through exposure. This is similar to how you need to "get your ear in" for any new languages phonemes by exposure.

High x low is pitch accent, not tone
@vulgarlang
@vulgarlang 2 жыл бұрын
More accurately, "pitch accent" is a kind of tone system (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tone_(linguistics)#Tone_and_pitch_accent). Meanwhile "high" and "low" are indeed "tones". It's just that they could be tones in a pitch-accented language.
