I'm super stoked to have this '83 MIJ Squier Strat staying at uncle Eric's place again. I bought this guitar back in 1999 at Daddy's Junky Music in Boston, MA. It served me well during my Berklee years, and then I passed it off to my good friend and songwriting partner, Joe Romeo, who used it for countless gigs as his main guitar.

Great ramble. Loved it! And, as always, great musicianship. Was in True Tone Music in Santa Monica last summer and this guy was having his way with an older Japanese Strat and after I complimented his playing he said that Fender really nails the sweet spot for quality vs cost with their Japanese made guitars. So I bought a Japanese Tele w/ Bigsby (entirely inspired by yours) and I'd have to agree. I connect more with that Tele than my custom shop Tele, which I sold as a result. Thanks for another great video.

Eric, I appreciate how even handed you are when talking about gear. You don’t seem to have an “agenda”, you simply give your opinions. The Weber Mini Mass is absultely one of the best gear purchases I have ever made. I am literally always playing through one; the sound is reasonably transparent, and they are dead simple to use. They are so useful for live and studio and honestly I think they sound better than the really expensive active attenuators with cab sims and other stuff. I much prefer to record a real amp and speakers, while using an attenuator, vs using an IR or amp simulator. Your ramblings are awesome.
@EricHaugenGuitar
@EricHaugenGuitar 3 жыл бұрын
Agree! Simulators work ok in a pinch, but I like to hear air moving. And yeah! All things we put between our guitar and the speaker change the sound to some extent, for me, as long as the result is a good change I'm happy with it :-)

That's a neat strat, thanks for sharing. My first guitar was a Squier Bullet in '89. It was later dismantled and the neck was joined to a jaguar shaped body that I made, my first homemade guitar ~'93. Sadly all that stuff is dust in the wind. I love the MIJ Fender stuff and it's still sort of affordable but going up.

Anytime someone mentions Big Star, an Alex Chilton gets its wings. I almost met him once. Saw him out the back of the gig venue in the afternoon smoking..um..a "cigarette" (of some variety). I left him in peace and went to the show that night. He was amazing. And he did a comedy routine based around "What's in Alex's bag?" He had rolling papers and pulled them out and gave the crowd a massive wink. Charming dude. Sadly missed. As the song goes: "I never travel far without a little Big Star".

Middle pickup is the most underrated pickup setting on a Strat, I love it! People complain it's either not bright enough compared to the bridge sound or doesn't have the woof of the neck pickup, but for me it fixes most problems I have with both those pickups. You can also try out the Blender pot CTS makes which allows you to use 2 extra pickup combinations; bridge and neck like a Tele and all three at once. I much prefer both those options than either position 2 or 4 on a regular Strat.

But here we are in corona-verse so that's not an option. Avoid the USA Fenders - pointlessly expensive and feel weird The Mexican, Japanese, Chinese, and Indonesian made Fenders are all potentially very good guitars! I love the Classic 50s, & 60s series, which now I think is "Vintera." Plus yeah the Squier Classic Vibes are so great and so cheap! Or hunt down a made in Japan on Reverb & Ebay

LOVE your Strat!! I happen to have the very exact same guitar myself - 1983 Squier Strat, MIJ, all black w/ maple neck, 70's style headstock & logo. I got mine brand new in January of 1984 (made in Dec. 1983) and have had it all these years. Those MIJ Squiers are really well made guitars. I too took off the original pickguard/pickup assembly and have it packed away. I'm currently running a set of DiMarzio Area '58/'58/'61 pickups in it with a Toneshaper control module for custom switching options. Curious, I'd love to know if ours happened to be made around the same time? Mine has a JV serial number on the neck plate.

My first band out of school, sans internet and all that info, I chose Gibson designs because they were easier to play and do vocals.So yeah, - Fenders ARE much more simultaneously reactive and sensitive, while also being bullet proof.All I can say there is that my The Paul had a glued on, tenon neck, - or it would have had a broken one, - on several occasions. What's also superior about the Fenders that I play now are those single coils; push some real aggression into humbuckers, and you've got mud.Even the vintage output PAF's are no fun in comparison.(SG's and Firebirds are still cool, - but with P90's...) Also part of my early ,wrongfully encouraged , career was a Hiwatt 100 head, - before most clubs had PA's ,and soundmen, and backlines. Besides being deafeningly loud, it also had endless headroom, which was nearly impossible to distort; good thing for stacked Rat's, MicroAmps, and Morley FuzzWahs. You shouldn't be worrying about copy right strikes; if you have original material from those old projects, that's the only cover I want to hear.Always keep proving that you're listening with your ears, instead of some BS, misplaced loyalty, - or shilling for paid endorsements.Always good stuff.

If set up properly, you can totally get it to work great! I only use 3 springs in the back, so there's less tension. So the dynamic thing about single coil pickups is exactly why I love Fenders (or single coils, in general) as well. Some things can only be done with humbuckers, but I'm not usually looking to do those things. Even with humbuckers, I'm into the lowest-gain ones I can get. I do have a Gretsch with TV Jones Classic Plus Filtertrons in it, and I do like the character of those, but the typical modern higher-gain humbuckers are not for me.

I have looked at the attenuators before, but get overwhelmed on how to hook them up. I have a Fender Princeton 12" speaker tweed version, and sometimes would like to play it not so loud. How does the weber attenuator hook up? Nice Squire by the way. I haven't been able to bond with my Strat yet - it's a 2008 American Std I bought a few years ago. Just can't figure it out - but love it when I hear someone play a strat who has them figured out. I play my tele and a 2004 Epiphone Sheraton more than anything else.

The newer USA Fender necks are kinda weird - like a wide, U-shaped thing. I can never quite hang with it either! Weber's got really great customer service and they'll always reply to email questions! What you'll need is 2 speaker cables and a 1/4 to 1/4 adapter: www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/GPP105--hosa-gpp-105-1-4-inch-trs-coupler You'd disconnect the little flat plug from the back of your princeton, hook up the speaker cable there, & run it into the mini mass. From the output of the minimass, you'd run another speaker cable, connect the adapter and then plug the flat plug back in to the other side of the adapter. That way the signal goes: amp -> speaker cable -> minimass -> adapter -> original plug -> speaker *NEVER PLAY YOUR AMP WITHOUT THE SIGNAL GOING SOMEWHERE* you can cook the transformer that way
