Wow! I was at that show in the audience. Feb 20, 1978. Traveled cross-country from the east coast and stopped in L.A. It was one of my best memories of the trip. Kenny Rogers was a show guest, too.

No actually, Andy Kaufman is a character played by Tony Clifton. He had to kill off Andy so he could focus on his new character, Donald Trump!
@rog94415 жыл бұрын
I love these KZfaq clips of Andy Kaufman. He's a different character in every appearance. Steve Martin was totally prepared for this. But then Andy outsmarted Steve by not putting on an act for once, and actually just being himself and answering the questions straight! He was always one step ahead of every one!:)

Nobody but Steve Martin could get this candid interview out of this genius. This is really special.

I knew Andy before he was famous and he was very difficult to get to know. When Andy was really Andy you were never sure if that was him. What was there was like a big kid. He was much more comfortable in different roles.

these two come from one branch, but one was able to really explore it. Steve Martin is a genius who did great standup, Andy was a performance art genius. Steve's great stuff is right there in front of you. Andy's stuff happens somewhere behind your eyes.

The way some people over-analyze Andy Kaufman reminds me of how people did the same thing with Chance the gardiner, in the movie "Being There."
@Realtrollking29883 жыл бұрын
It's because of Bob zmuda. Andy wasn't that odd or weird or even brilliant. They should be analyzing zmuda. Hes rewritten history and made people obsessed with Kaufman. Andy would've been known for taxi and that's it if not for zmuda. Just remember every controversial thing he's done, zmuda was there. There's a reason for that

I understand his humor it is an angle I use. I have been told I’m funny! I remember one time I was feeling not myself so I approached my coworkers and heard them say “ oh here he comes” I am awkward in social settings so I told them I haven’t been feeling myself lately. Then someone said “Oh yeah what’s wrong”? I said nothing but it is a good thing. 🎉😊

I can't believe how much he played Steve Martin here. I should hope Steve Martin wasn't that out of touch with what the true genius behind Kaufman's routines was.

He was known, especially to this crowd.....He'd already been on Carson and SNL multiple times each and people were familiar with his style, notice the roaring cheers when he mentions his Elvis skit! "Taxi" hadn't quite started but was on the way later that year. I think Steve was entering his peak around this time and had only recently begun guest hosting, so he kept it relatively restrained being Carson was "the Man" and didn't want to shake things up too much on his show. He also seemed to understand that part of what made it great television was the way Carson could take a step back and let his guests shine.

"There are a lot of different foreign people in New York..." Um, I'll respectfully submit that this is not Andy speaking frankly. It's a bit. And the bit may well be Andy speaking frankly. The beauty of Andy is that every time you saw his work, it was like taking acid--you could just never tell what was real, and what wasn't--therefore destroying the whole concept of "reality." Brilliant.
