For Tony Andrews (Funktion One), the “Audio Moment” is at the heart of his work. You know, those eyes-closed moments when you sink away into sound and you feel your awareness expanding. Through all his loudspeaker development processes, chasing this moment is what drives him forward. With reference to Giulio Tononi and Integrated Information Theory, seeing sound, spacing out, elevated states of consciousness, Glastos 1971 and the M25 raves, Tony let’s us into his mindset and way of thinking about sound.
“If you want to be really good at Audio, you have to know how to space out.” If you’ve ever wanted to know what makes Tony Andrews tick and how he thinks and feels about audio, watch this fantastic presentation from PLASA London 2015, which was packed to the rafters and left the audience somewhat emotional at the end. The conversation is facilitated by Mike Nicholson.

This all makes absolute sense to me. Crystal clear. I’ve always thought I was a bit mad thinking like this, but the most spiritual experience of my life so far was the first time I heard a massive sound system outside. The way he talks about music listening as meditation. Everything. Amazing interview. I also happen to have a lot of experience with psychedelics, and I can tell you this type of thinking becomes even more clear. Seeing the connections between sound, vibration and patterns is just mind blowing. Super interesting guy.

I feel what he is talking about is exactly what I am starting to understand about sound ( frequency) . If you have made music that changes your feelings weather it is your taste or not, then It is good music, even if you don't like it.

good interview. i think the bottom line for those of "us" who have been doing "it" for a long time know is really the search for utopia. we want too "see" the vocalist's face actually appear in a speaker box and jump out and bite us or "see" the kick drum come out of the sub(s) and break a bone in our chests!. the comment about that "moment" has happened to me a few times and it is a little freaky BUT beautiful at the same time. it doesn't last very long but you know it when it happens. being involved in the sound re-enforcement is actually a far more spiritual experience than anyone would think. i entertain your comments, thoughts. it is a great gift from God IMO. thanks!.

I find Tony very interesting....amazing history behind him, and has his priorities straight...I wouldn't say F1 are the best but, Tony knows how to teach.

+tadhg sweeney It doesn't really matter what your opinion is of his products, but he is a very, very interesting man indeed! I wanted to get him speaking on his philosophies and let people see more of the man himself. He's a real hero of mine!

+Soulsound Definitely! I'm not saying I don't like F1 by anymeans, just not my favourite. I will say that Tony has given really great engineering advise, I'd love to meet him and Ann one day, fascinating people who know what to do by the good of sound. :)

Ah you're in the UK. Good. Start with www.soulsound.co.uk. Download my free ebook about how to get started in the industry and then look around for places you can volunteer at - theatres, pubs that have gigs, local PA companies etc. You'll only need to do a few shifts to know whether it's the right path for you - you'll either be so excited by the buzz you'll do anything to get into it, or you'll realise the hours and effort are too much for you... :) But start with the ebook! Watch some of the videos. There's far more on the website than we have up here on the KZfaq channel.

i agree with his comments about the "higher" state of consciousness to a degree and this for me, is where we as humans have to be VERY careful. as a Christian and a sound guy, i believe music is for sure a gift from God and has been active for a VERY long time. i have listened to every genre of music and been criticized by WAY too many of my "church" friends for doing so. as long as it does not blaspheme or has vulgar language, i'm fine with it. from ella fitzgerald to frank zappa i'm there. the element we need to be careful with IS the spiritual component. like everything else, music can be used for good or evil. in the past , governments have used VERY low level frequencies as a weapon to disarm so to speak, villages and render the inhabitants of such useless. scary stuff. much more to be said but i do like his comments. thanks.

i think this gent is very close to becoming a Christian!!!!. i'm sure he knows of the music produced in centuries past by composers like Bach etc. that give glory to God. love the video!.
