Played a formative part of my mid-20's onwards, back in the 80's & 90's. Such an influential producer & live-mix engineer. Cut such a unique path for his own sound - along w/ working on albums/live shows with so many mavericks/oddballs & vastly under-rated singers/musicians from Jamaica. (Bim Sherman - r.i.p.)

I'm struggling so hard to produce good audio for my short movies and it seems like boom mics or shot guns are the way to go. Or I haven't perfected the lav. Good vid.

Prima video, maar 2 dingen: die valse zangeres aan het intro kost je geloofwaardigheid, er is meer nodig dan een leuk uiterlijk. En het steenkolenengels... maak dan de video gewoon in het Nederlands.

It’s fabulous to hear Bob’s voice crisply and clear through that superior microphone. He is a pure genius! Starting at such an early age of fourteen on HAM radio, he devoted himself to being the best he could be. His parents supported his learning as a child, and he excelled to remarkable heights within the science and technology of sound. I lived two blocks from him in his village of Marissa, IL.

Bob sold me a pair of PR31BW mics and challenged me to try them on overheads. Best purchase EVER! They reject noise from the air conditioner, from my wife's footsteps upstairs, car doors outside.... whereas all my other brands pick up EVERYTHING unwanted. I plan to buy more soon. They're an all around mic.

Part man, part mixing board. Amazing to see the incredible skills so honed. One of my best life moments was going up to the balcony at an On-U Sound System gig at University of London Union and finding that Adrian Sherwood was up there working the desk while Mark Stewart stood next to him toasting on the mic (with the crowd down on the main floor not realizing).

Must be notted that it is not ideal to sub-gain inputs with digital desk because : you need the signal to come in as hot as possible to have the highest bit resolution on inputs converters. On Digital desk you might try to gain up the hottest you can before peak and then use a trim to put digital signal down to have your fader at 0db mark .

Both sides of the argument are correct: (1) Technically speaking, this method is not optimal gain staging (2) This method is highly practical especially that modern equipment have lower noise floors. I recommend Dave Rat's "Optimize Gain Structure" video where he discusses how to achieve the best of both worlds.

This all makes absolute sense to me. Crystal clear. I’ve always thought I was a bit mad thinking like this, but the most spiritual experience of my life so far was the first time I heard a massive sound system outside. The way he talks about music listening as meditation. Everything. Amazing interview. I also happen to have a lot of experience with psychedelics, and I can tell you this type of thinking becomes even more clear. Seeing the connections between sound, vibration and patterns is just mind blowing. Super interesting guy.

Wireless sound production sounds good in theory and looks good on paper. But none of that means a hill of beans come show time. In 41+ years of performing live in every type of venue across different genres of music using widely varying sound systems and sound technician arrangements, I've learned MANY things. And I'm still learning. But by and large, I've learned that while innovation is good and necessary, getting the job done is paramount. Therefore, I stick with gear, methods, and approaches that I've learned through experience I can rely heavily on to perform for me on a regular basis. My current three piece band utilizes wireless guitar and bass systems and wireless IEMs, all of which operate at 2.4ghz. We also have remote tablet control of FOH and individual tablet control of IEMs for bassist and drummer, all operating on 5ghz but, the associated wifi modem transmits simultaneously at 2.4ghz also. Our systems are not top of line professional touring rigs with licensed frequency ranges, but they are much higher quality than most other club bands in our region carry. They are ALL supposed to be capable of eliminating or avoiding interference and dropouts via their proprietary circuit designs. They do not. The fact is, in todays world there is scarcely a person in any audience who isn't carrying a smart phone or other device. Furthermore, EVERY venue has one, two, or many wifi systems operating inside. This simply is NOT an environment where wireless technology can be relied upon for reliable sound reproduction. Therefore, I still have the digital mixing console beside me onstage while performing as a safeguard to ensure control of FOH and auxes if/when wireless control goes down. I just purchased supplemental DMX lighting gear and decided then to also move away from wireless lighting control, which has failed multiple times at EVERY show I've used it on. From here on, I'll use wired DMX. Call me closed minded. Call me old fashioned. But call me and I'll give you an uninterrupted show from start to finish even though it does require more effort on my part.
