Geezer has been less than favourable about his time with Sabbath during this period. The song "Giving Up the Ghost" on his first solo album (released a year after Cross Purposes) is critical of Iommi continuing to use the Black Sabbath name.
@poulwinther
@poulwinther 2 ай бұрын
@@TailedFeature It's easy to throw stones. The fact remains that Tony and Ozzy own the name and without the moniker this era would be even lesser known. You don't think Geezer would have like to ten-fold his sales if he could do it that easily?

It was the tour to support Cross Purposes that I went to see this line up of Sabbath. Newport Centre, 14th April 1994. Cathedral and Godspeed were supporting. An interesting side note - Tony Martin lost his voice that night, but they were great.

Geezers bass playing was out of this world. I remember seing them in london hyde park and his fingers was just a blur. And like ozzy had dyslexia. But if you think ozzy never wrote any music for black sabbath then Listen to THE WRIT and then think how come i thought he never wrote anything. Because he didnt. He would sing what ever came into his head then Geeza would write it down.

Whoa wow, an alligator or Dragon on the Cross Purposes Poster damn, & I thought that was just an Import Poster version of the World Tour in England but was actually the censored one! I have the Cross Purposes Live Concert on VHS I bought at Tower Records & also the Cross Purposes Album on Import IRS Records Vinyl I bought at Street Light Records & also a second copy I also managed to find at Reckless Records of London back in 1994, then saw you guys at the San José Event Center & the Warfield SF concert shows good times! Also Mr. Tony Iommi & Mr. Geezer Butler, I want to thank you two for throwing me your guy's Guitar Picks & Bass Picks towards me at the concerts, when you two flunged the picks into the audiences, I managed to catch your guy's Picks at the San José Sharktank, Mandalay Bay, Konocti Harbor Resort & Spa, Marysville, Fresno, Irvine, Inglewood & Hollywood Bowl concerts, my friend was really lucky & caught Bobby Rondinelli's drum stick, priceless precious memorable fun times, I'll never ever forget it! Funny thing though, I was singing the part of Psychophobia song live during the SJ Event Center show, the part where the lyrics goes, "My colors all run dry, but now I see the word in black & white, it's to late now, it's times to kiss the Rainbow goodbye!", to my old girlfriend at the time & you Mr. Tony Martin, saw me singing though out the whole concert in the audience & were shocked in utter amazement & gave me a look of glee & satisfaction, because I was the only one in the crowd, a total Diehard Faithful Sabbath Fanatic, that knew all the lyrics to the whole Cross Purposes Record! When you looked at me at the show, you gave me a look like, damn this awesome Sabbath Fan knows all the Ozzy Osbourne, Ronnie James Dio, Ian Gillan & Glenn Hughes lyrics & now he knows mine, Holy Cow! In conclusion, I just want to say that I attend Ronnie James Dio's Funeral at the Forest Lawn Cemetery in Hollywood Hills & met Rudy Sarzo & Glenn Hughes there in the crowd, & ask Glenn, "Now that Dio past away, is there any chance of you rejoining Sabbath again & do a World Tour doing the materials from the Seventh Star, Peel Sessions & Fused Records?", & Mr. Iommi, Glenn said, "Yeah me & Iommi are getting back together & jammin', but you didn't hear it from me!" as he laughed obnoxiously really loud in delight & rolled his eyes up in the air, thinking that he wished he could, ah heheeheee lol! But it was somber times at Ronnie's Funeral, poor Wendy Dio, she didn't even look at anybody in the crowd, God Bless her & Ronnie RIP! And thank you & God Bless you Tony Iommi, Tony Martin, Geezer Butler & Bobby Rondinelli, All Hail Sabbath, the Masters of Metal!👩‍🎤🧑‍🎤👨‍🎤 ⃝𖤐𓆩🤘𓆪🤟⃤⩜⃝🤘⃤\m/⸸⁶⁶⁶⛧🤘🇵🇭

And then a certain Mr. Bill Ward stepped in for a few shows in South America after Bobby Rondinelli moved on. Where did the years go? I still remember putting this one into the CD player as I drove off from work, and thinking "Wow" as "I Witness" played. The events that inspired "Psychophobia" were still fresh on our minds, having happened about an hour away. We caught them on the tour, with Morbid Angel and Motörhead opening.

I must say the new remixed albums sound much better and as a long time Black Sabbath fan I think looking back over history it is clear to me that Tony Martin is the best singer the band ever had because of his voice and range he is the only one who could sing any song on all 19 albums.

But also the other songs, really fresh and exciting, Sabbath somehow reinvented themselves; i.m.O. the best Album w. Tony/Tony. And to say that is a bad crime, I know... Tony, I believe that some your influences include Movie Soundtrack Composers. I hear hints of Bernhard Herrmann, Ennio Morricone, Lalo Schiffrin, perhaps even snippets of Bob Cobert (ABC TV's "Dark Shadows"). Am I off base?? And, to my reckoning, "Children of The Grave" smacks of being a Tarantella!

My biggest question about this album is how much Geezer actually influenced the writing. Like, I know that when Tony Martin was in Sabbath he'd usually write all the lyrics, but I wonder if Geezer wrote any lyrics here. The writing credits are indeed Iommi/Martin/Butler for all songs (not specificying by lyrics and music), but would be interesting to be more specific about Geezer's contributions.

Cross Purposes is the best of the Martin albums in my opinion because his vocals are the least Dio-sounding, and Geezer played bass. Martins earlier albums with the band sound to me like an attempt at a continuation of the Dio era sound, but on Cross Purposes Tony ditched the Dio vocal imitation, that and the return of Geezer on bass makes the album seem more legitimate to me.
