Read his autobiography for some kind of insight.. nothing. All very quaint like this interview. "Oh I liked the Shadows and played blues.." and then all the technical side.. then out of nowhere the most radically different and dark and sinister guitar music of that time. Yeeeea, he's not really telling us everything that was going on

Tony Iommi has a real natural coolness. Ozzy said about him, "When he got diagnosed with cancer, he just dealt with it. That's him. I'm going [imitates crying sound], and he's, like, 'Whatever I have to do.' He's like that. He's always been like that. Very calm."

In all honesty, Tony Iommi may be the most influential guitarist alive today. He basically created/inspired a totally new genre of music. Hendrix and EVH transformed the way people play the guitar but Iommi's legacy is just as important.

You know whats interesting is he drop tuned his guitar to C# because standard tuning was hard on his fingers, and by doing so ended up creating a new dynamic sound that ultimately became heavy metal.

When KK retired, I thought it was the end of Priest. Richie, however, proved to be a fine replacement. He has the chops, the look and the vibe to be in that band. Tony is just pure class and pure metal. The King.

People can split hairs and debate who and when and hey, I see the arguments and the similarities but the fact remains ....... When Black Sabbath walked into the recording studio history was made and recorded (literally) and released to the public. And for the first time you could put your finger on it. It was there. Right there. And you knew it. And we still know it today. Forever......

I was working with a painting crew and they were painting the inside of this huge white church and one of the painters was blasting out "Hells Bells "by AC/DC and it sounded fantastic echoing off the inside walls of that place!Good thing they didn't play any Sabbath apparently but I would have liked it !🤘

Tony's fingers, finding their audience, coming up with the spooky music idea which basically helped invent metal. especially show how shabby the critics reaction was and then jump ahead to end with hall of fame induction. Otherwise it could really easy turn into a movie just about Ozzy. Might save that for the sequel. LOL

Saw Iommi with Sabbath on the 13 tour. Not only was the show fantastic, but Tony was absolutely on fire that night, playing through a giant wall of Laneys. As someone who's ripped off and idolized Mr. Iommi, he was at 200% that night and took a bunch of solos to the next level. A true original, icon, and gentleman.

I saw Sabbath in the same tour. Best show of my life, and i ve seen many shows! Tony was brutal that night.

I saw them on the 13 tour as well. Probably the best show I’ve ever seen. The only show close was Metallica in 1998. I’ve seen both bands 3x and those 2 shows were just above and beyond.

I remember seeing a clip of Paul McCartney handed an upright bass strung for a right-handed player and still asked to play. He didn't hesitate but played it perfectly. I think many who saw it didn't realise what was happening. But I saw the strings being strung right-handed. I thought it was interesting. He made the adjustments like a true pro. Tony I believe could do the same if he had to. He did say he played right-handed for a bit.

I was there when Rob Halford stepped in for Ozzy at the last minute. Amazing how many people booed and left the venue. To me it was metal heaven.

Ive been playing guitar 30 plus years tony been such an inspiration. Early on i ran a drill bit through a finger. Unbeleivable he could play with no feeling on his fingers. Mine somewhat healed but even now years later sometimes when i bend a note it hits the spot and trust me it sends you to your knees. What an accomplishment no feeling and the ability to persevere all these years dealing with that pain and playing through it when it hit is incredible. I was so conscious of it or scared of it i quite playing gigs. Seriously at times more painful than hitting your finger with a hammer. Just wanted to say thanks tony i wouldnt be playing at all without your insperation

I was there at the Pacific Amphitheater. 2 nights. I disagree - everyone LOVED IT. It was cool and weird. They had 8 record contracts offered for Sabbath with Halford but he'd just signed a multi-album deal with Fight.

My favorite live player is Tony. I saw him 7 times and took every opportunity to see him play that I could. He is just so good live. Too bad cancer has restricted his playing out these days, but at least he is still with us.

Was supposed to see Sabbath on Easter 1982 in Phoenix Mob Rules tour. The churches got it changed to Monday. They said the colesium would collapse and kill everyone inside if the played that Easter. Great Great show

"War Pigs" and "Fairies Wear Boots" each have more classic heavy riffs in one song than most bands have in their discography. He turned a physical limitation into the birth of a powerful musical genre. Tony Iommi is a true original.

I just turned 51. Without question I’ve been lucky to have seen Metal at its best. 1982 Metal was exploding and I bought Screaming for Vengeance and Priest has been my band ever since. Ritchie is a amazing guitarist. Great interview with Tony. Sabbath and Priest good as it gets👍

This is a wonderful interview! Ritchie is a class act and he gave a very professional interview. His questions were polite, not gushing (like I would be), and there’s a mutual respect between the guitarists. Of course Tony is always a gentleman, cool and calm, and his demeanor is nothing like what we’d expect of the legendary riff master. He is simply the best. Great job to Gibson for making this happen. More, please!

Richie has truly proved his ability to supplant a legend like kk anyone can play the songs but to go and study the origins understand where and why this music evolves into the entity and understand the man who is undisputed in his creation of something meant originally to be no different than anyone else to play for a liviving also with Richie having access to the other band most responsible for the evolution and the men who were there and are considered Tony’s peers you understand the causality of the unrelenting drive to do this because they both were there played with each other but would not accept anything less than complete originality, complete artistic control, a vision that would be brought to fruition no matter the cost. A laser focus that made the world go away until they had to return to show the beautiful art that had been completed and to accept nothing less than a lifelong drive to never deviate from the original passion and mission statement but to never revisit the past and never ever stop evolving and creating til death stops it. Only Ritchie could do this interview because he has the respect of a metal progenitor who has no one before him. With that said the environment to attain the info from Tony himself is assured because tony feels comfortable and also respects Richie for his abilities his similar mindset and preferences and see a kindred spirit in Richie in a mentor yet mutual respect type of situation. This was an amazing interview. Thank you for this gem and a revelation of the elements that led to a genre that will never stop growing and branching out and has the loyalist fans and a legion of bands to form and do this for the same reasons. Tony iommi is the metal god.

Well, if Rob gets around playing the guitar, Ritchie could always go after a reporter interviewer type of work. Seems a bit refreshing hearing his questions esp. considering he is in that world and can reference other artists. I'm particularity glad he skipped the "fingers" question even though Iommy revisited the matter through the lens of having to relearn the guitar.

I met Tony Iommi when I bought his book Iron Man. I got it signed as well. Huge inspiration for lots of musicians.

Any of us who’ve played Gibsons and Epis for 25+ years are SOO happy to see this new Gibson marketing stuff. All the new models ive played are BACK on track like 70’s thru 90’s guitars. Thank you guys for steppin it back up and givin us all great guitars back. Tony & Richie hats off. 🙌🏻💯

My older sister got me WSOSFRNR for Xmas 1977…I just turned 12 y/o and heaviest thing I ever heard up to that point was Sweet Ballroom Blitz or KISS Rock N Roll All Night…so after unwrapping this gift and examining the album and opening the gatefold and seeing something so spoking and bizarre, I wasn’t even sure what it was…I asked my parents if I could go downstairs and play it on the stereo, which was a really nice system…I dropped the needle and hear rain and thunder and then BAMM, I was just mesmerized…at some point my parents had to pull me away from the stereo and put me in the car and drive to Canada (we lived in Dearborn MI, but my dad was from Canada and all our relatives were there)…I told my cousin who was my age about what I got for Xmas and he takes me into his older brother’s bedroom (my other cousin) and shows me all his Black Sabbath albums and I think it dawned on me that this band was huge and I needed to know and listen to everything I could about them.

I like the fact that Tony mentioned that he would like to do something with strings. Spiral Architect is my favorite Black Sabbath song and utilizes string and other instruments.

Phillip Pitts Assuming you’re going for his early sound, you’d probably be better off with p90s. He used them until heaven and hell I’m pretty sure, then he switched to humbuckers

I was introduced to Black Sabbath in 76, and have been a fan ever since! Saw Heaven and Hell with Dio one time in Dallas, it was great!
