The show really did a great job of displaying the warped and antiquated logic and moral code of people like Tony. He's portrayed as an almost sympathetic character, while being this hardened mob boss that was always a few steps ahead of those around him (he had to be, in his dog eat dog reality). Frustratingly, Tony and a number of the other characters were hero worshipped, when it was made clear all the time that while they were written as likeable and understandable characters (as in, we could understand why they do the things they do, it's just "their world") the underlying message is that organized crime and the people that perpetrate is are not people to idolize, many innocent bystanders end up caught up in their enterprise and they couldn't care less of this being the case - if anything they need them, as they contribute to their money making and power grabbing capabilities. Not to mention just how little life is valued to them, as is displayed in this series. Sure, there may be rules for dealing with some people but ultimately unless you're "made" killing is just another part of the job. But I digress; a core underlying theme of the series was to question why people might look at various characters and hero worship them, idolize or even sympathize with people capable of such acts? this was brilliantly accented in the final scene where we're left wondering if Tony finally got whacked. Part of why they left it open ended was to challenge the viewer to not only pick apart why Tony would have been targeted by other bosses, but also to ask the viewer why they would feel anything for Tony, considering all that he and his crew had done?

@@sarmatiancougar7556 bad writing? How? Adriana had immense faith in Christopher despite everything he put her through, which led to her downfall. Matt and Jackie were both kinda dumb young guys who were hot headed and over eager to climb the ranks. Lol at Jackie, who tf goes for a walk down the park when you know the mob is after you? Vito went miles and miles away and only came back when his cash started to dwindle and he thought he could get back into Tony's good graces. Tony B was the smartest of the lot and the only reason he was ever found was because Tony had connections with people who could trace call locations. If a hellbent New York mob can't find you, then the fact is you've done pretty well. So no, not bad writing, given that it's consistent with all their characters.

This is one of many reasons why Tony was fed up with Chris in the end. He risked getting 20 to life for Chris by killing Matt, because Tony obviously loved Chris so much at the time. Neither of them are saints, but Tony definitely used this incident in his head among other horrific past events to justify killing Chris.

Trying to make sure if he is a rat and indeed wearing a wire he knows the feds wouldn’t want him committing murder, or another case when they’re grabbing the hardware out the closet and Tony says I wanna do it and big puss says good, sort of like I got him on tape talking about murder and killing someone, or the other situation big puss thinks and feels at that one moment that tony was or is on to him and is going to whack him after killing Matt

Tony still had the suspicion that Big P was a rat. By being only them 2 and having him also shoot Matt, he was testing his loyalty. He made him accountable. That's why he turned to look at him to see if he was going to shoot as well.I think Tony picked up in Big P's hesitation.

"Don't you think we woulda killed you already, if we wanted you dead?" Tony acts so nice to the kid all the while knowing the kid is dead from the start. Stringing him along, keeping him with the belief he's going to be alright, is a truly terrifying scene but brilliantly done! 😊
@laurafreedlund28992 жыл бұрын
He really shows his vengeful, cruel self right here. Yeah Matt was a moron who was doomed from the start due to lack of brains, and he had to die but why not just shoot him and be done with it? Why beat him up, take him to an empty building and tie him to a chair and tell him he wasn't going to kill him? He's just basking in this kid's terror knowing he was going to kill him the whole time, but him fucking with Matt's mind and giving him false hope like that (and ENJOYING it) is horrifying. Gandolfini really was way too good of an actor.

A key aspect of this scene that isn’t talked about much is the way Tony looks at Pussy after the first shot. This wasn’t just revenge for the guy who tried to kill Chris, it was a test to see how reluctant Pussy would be to do a hit like this since the FBI obviously wouldn’t allow him to do that as an informant. Wonderful amazing writing and acting!
@BewleyUK9 Жыл бұрын
Interesting. Also, the way Pussy starts off slow, then fires more and more, almost over compensating. Tony eventually joins in, and they shoot way more times than they needed to. Possibly because he knows it's his last hit with Pussy, possibly out of anger towards Pussy.

1:55 seems like a bit of a plot hole. Richie was acting like he had no idea where Matt was and/or like he ever went to him after the hit. Scenes like the hospital where he acts clueless and now Matt just admitted Richie “got mad” when he told him, therefor revealing that they actually met and had a conversation. I feel like that right there would have gotten Richie killed because he should have killed Matt upon learning that, or at least kept him inside the social club until Tony and others could arrive and take care of him. Revealing that he and Richie met and spoke about the failed hit, even if Richie wasn’t in on it, should have been a death sentence for Richie but it somehow just got swept under the rug in the plot of the show.

"Rome wasn't built in a day!" Rome wasn't gonna be built ever. Both Matt and Sean were seen as clowns by everyone in the organization. Tony in particular saw them both as morons and a liability to the outfit (not good since he's the only one who can hand out promotions), and they failed to impress at the Poker Game, which they thought was their big break. Their lives were gonna be as bottom-rung associates until they got killed, arrested or flipped. But Matt ironically came closest to taking Tony down as a mob boss, posthumously.
@skyedge34074 жыл бұрын

If they really wanted to be gangsters that badly, their best bet would have been staying close to Christopher; because of his emotional weakness for Chris, Tony would have kept them around as long he (Chris) vouched for them. I'm not saying they did anything wrong. They failed to impress. Nobody took a liking to them. It had little to do with their actual duties. I disagree about capos giving that kind of promotion. These two were associates, they certainly could NOT become buttons/soldats/made without Tony's approval. I don't think a consigliere can even give a promotion: he isn't assigned a crew. And even as underboss, he certainly needs Tony's approval. The boss needs to know and approve of everyone who is in the organization. Associates can be accepted/employed by anyone in the mob, but they aren't "in."
