About I Dream Of Jeannie: Barbara Eden and Larry Hagman star in this classic ‘60s comedy about a genie and her master. When astronaut Tony Nelson is forced to crash-land on a remote Pacific island, he finds a strange bottle that's washed ashore. When he opens it, out pops a genie named Jeannie. Not only does she get him back to civilization safely, she also smuggles herself aboard the rescue plane. Jeannie becomes Tony's constant companion. But though she happily grants his every wish, she causes more than her fair share of trouble.

I watch this repeatedly, can't stop. Of course, she is stunningly beautiful, delightfully innocent, just wonderful..that's all been mentioned. But Barbara Eden is an absolutely extraordinarily gifted actress. Throughout this cut, just focus on her alone, even when the other actors have the lines. In the proposal scene, watch her changes of expression, particularly when she returns to Uncle Sully and asks to send Tony away. Just the slightest twitches of facial expression...total command of her skill. Then later, when surprised by Colonel Bellows and the general, she shrinks to Tony's side. Watch her eye movement, downcast face, being sheltered by him...until he introduces her. Barbara Eden's looks, figure and costume get so much attention, but she is completely undervalued for her acting ability and performance. A consummate professional at work. I love her.

Sidney Sheldon did not think the idea of Jeannie and Tony being married was such a great idea. He tried to explain to NBC executive Mort Werner that the sexual tension between them would disappear- which was one of the reasons why the series was a success. Werner said, "Do you want to be on the air next season?" "Of course", Sheldon said. "THEN GET THEM MARRIED", was Werner's ultimatum. After the marriage, the ratings slid dramatically- and the network cancelled the series at the end of the season. Werner later admitted, "We never should have gotten them married."

Later shows made the same error -- notably "Rhoda" and "Angie", both of whom were married toward the end of their first seasons on-air -- and lasted only through a second season. "The Nanny" deliberately avoided this fate, stretching out the tension between Fran and Max Sheffield for several more seasons until they knew the series was coming to a natural end anyway. Sure enough, the season after their marriage was the last.

@@roberthaworth8991 The Nanny suffered the same exact Fate. The Season ended because ratings slipped after Fran & Maxwell got Married... even after Fran begged the Network not to. She warned them once the Sexual Tension is gone so is the Series. They ignored her and Married Fran & Maxwell off anyway. The show ended soon after. *_Fran Drescher talks about this during interviews all the time._*

They should've dragged on the engagement for a whole other season and kept Tony busy longing for private time with Jeannie keeping the Sexual Tension going and Jeannie still getting into trouble _(with Tony almost losing her as his Genie a couple times),_ their first year of marriage, to last at least another season after that. They would've gotten 2more years before Ratings dramatically slipped.

@@TheBrownIsland Since Fran D. was a co-producer, owned a big piece of the show (as she owns the rights today), and was its indispensable star, she had only herself to blame. It's more likely that after several seasons other key cast members wanted to do something else, and rather than severely re-tool they just ended it -- gently, with a wrapup episode. That was a good move; the show didn't go on way past its prime, to 9-10 seasons, until all the creativity and sparkle had been wrung out of it, as it probably would today.

So much is put onto the whole "jump the shark" stuff that the beauty of this scene (the whole episode actually) is missed. Tony spent 4 years hiding her. Holding that he would NEVER marry her. Always tried to follow NASA commands and rules, while still keeping Jeannie around. He finally had his life back. Here, he finally realizes that he is, in fact, in love with her and that he wants to spend the rest of his life with her. Not only does he go to get her, he willingly disobeys orders. Knows he will be Court Martialled if caught. But goes anyway. He doesn't back down in Basenji. And then when she gives him the chance to take it back at the house, he doesn't take it. Same thing when they are at NASA. She tries to pop out, and he stops her. This is the best scene/s in the show because Tony has gone from wanting her gone. Struggling to keep her a secret/being frustrated by her. To jumping in head first and not looking back. I love character growth, though, so stuff like this always stands out for me.

I have to admit, I appreciated them getting married and when I watched Jeannie I was a toddler then. Maybe Sheldon was right, that the concept of them not being married was the success of the show, but as a kid watching the show I kept saying to myself 'they need to be married already'. I was beginning to think Major Nelson was a punk and he was selfish and strange. Then yes after they got married, the show was not that interesting anymore. It was a great show, but it ran it's course.

@@karenearle5507 Well, the show was not even a big hit during its run. The majority of the time it was on air the show was ether in the top 30 or not in the top 30. There is a BIG reason why Eden, Hagman, and Daily were so shocked after the show was over on NBC and reunions. Syndication, 139 episodes is enough material for different TV networks to pick up rights to different shows, and Jeannie ended up being one of them. During its first run in syndication, the show was doing so well in ratings, that it beat newer shows on air, and 50 years later it is still on air and it got more recognition from syndication that first run.
