Tony "Two-Ton" Galento -vs- Jackie Gleason | as told to Rocky Marciano (16mm Transfer)

In 1960, former heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano was contracted to host a boxing and interview program called Main Event. Each of the 30 episodes included studio interviews between Rocky and a contemporary celebrity, actor or sports star. The interviews lasted only a few minutes each, and were followed by the feature presentation being a recent or classic boxing match. Some shows were better than others, but all the interviews were interesting, and the best ones were classic.
Here is the Jackie Gleason's famous episode with Rocky Marciano, where Gleason describes his famous altercation with Tony "Two-Ton" Galento outside a night club. I also really enjoyed their refreshing and genuine conversation.

Heavyweight boxers are dangerous men, no matter what age. I remember watching George Chuvalo shadow boxing at a gym I used to go to. He was up there in age and not in shape, but the hand speed was remarkable for a guy not in fighting shape. You wouldn't want to go anywhere near him. Scary to think what he could have done when he was in his prime.

Jackie Gleason, Rocky Marciano - 2 great men, who had their time at the top of their professions, 1 a fighter and 1 a comedian, but to get there, both would have had to endure a hard, rough 'slog' to reach their status, especially starting their professions and working there way through a very hard & poor time of America, a very different world of today. Both would have come into contact with Organised Crime - In the fight game - definitely ( fixed fights and threats, rough with a capital R ) and as a comedian, working the club's, often owned by Organised Crime syndicates also. @@SB-ok3xc as great as Marciano was, it's doubtful that he's break the ribs of any of the top five heavyweights today. He never weighed in above 195 lbs in his career, if that. Today, he would be a Cruiserweight. So, it would be more fair to place him against an Oleksandr Usyk (when he was still a cruiser), Maris Breidis, etc. Guys like Anthony Joshua, Tyson Fury, Deontay Wilder, Alexandre Povetkin, Dillian Whyte, Joseph Parker, etc. would likely be a bit much for him. Guys like Lennox Lewis, Vitali Klitschko, Wladimir Klitschko very likely stop him inside of 12 rounds. He'd just be too small to compete with them, particularly the more technically sound and athletic ones mentioned. Doesn't take away from him being an all time great one bit, though.

I like the story of Rocky, when He was in the army in England, He was approached by a U.S. Army unit who were having real trouble with a big Aussie soldier stationed near by. When down the local pubs this Aussie a tough street fighter would pick on the Americans and floor them. Anyway Rocky agreed to go down the pub with the guys and kept a low profile. Sure enough the Aussie went up to Rocky and started pushing Him, Rocky bent low and then unleashed a volley of shots into the big ugly Australian knocking him cold. This Guy was never seen again in a pub ! Which I think answers the question could Rocky be as good as Two Ton Tony in a bar brawl. Better !!

I wonder where that gift of the golden gloves the Rock gave Jackie are today. They should be in a museum somewhere.

Marciano pulverizes Galento a thousand times in a row. He was every bit as tough and in infinitely better condition.

Absolute fact, no question. As tough as Galento was, he was simply no match for Rock. And after he woke up from being knocked out, he would have called Rocky a bum and said it was a lucky punch! One of boxing histories great characters.

Galento would beat Marciano he was 50lbs heavier also with an iron chin, could fight 15 rounds and hit like a sledgehammer. Galento was never counted over he either lost on points, retired hurt and 1 TKO against Louis.
