I did a matchup breakdown of Baylor vs. Oklahoma in 2021, but beyond that Aranda's a guy that I'll definitely treat more in the future. In researching these videos, I've gotten really interested in a Mountain West school of defense that popped up from 2008-2012 or so (with Aranda and Justin Wilcox being key figures, with take-off coaches like Todd Orlando, Gary Andersen, and others coming along for the ride) and I think there's a lot of schematic history to be written about that period. In the meantime, look out for my upcoming Alabama video, where some indirect comments on Ron Roberts will play a surprising role!

Herm's connection to SDSU might've been the catalyst that this defense needed to go mainstream. It's crazy to me that basically nobody from this tree worked their way up to a P5 job until 2018. Brady Hoke's the exception, but he had Michigan ties that weren't based on his connection to this defense. I think that Long's 3-3-5 has a lot to contribute to this new 3-high world that we're moving into now vs. the spread, and I hope that guy's like White and Arnett make some noise so that these ideas can start getting pushed a little bit more. I think it'd be good for schematic history in the long run.

​@@TheCoordinatorProject Absolutely. The 335 is solid, but its tough to recruit defensive linemen and pass rushers using it. Most recruits want to play for NFL style defenses , thus you have to rely on getting gems in the rough and develop them for a few years. Its a great system when you're building a program that lacks talent (ASU..thanks Todd Graham!), but I think the 335 tends to hit a wall when it comes to stopping good P5 schools week in and week out. This video compliments your ASU 4-3 video marvelously.

Yeah, it's kind of a weird combination of positions from a projection standpoint. You're really recruiting a 3-4 DL with 4-3 LB's, but they fit together like neither of those systems. The main position that doesn't exist in the 3-3-5 is the pure EDGE rusher, which I think is what Pierce was talking about being unable to recruit; LB's have to be able to stack and pursue (requiring more range than a typical EDGE), and DL aren't typically edge rushers, so that''s one highlight-reel position that the defense doesn't have. If you think of the LB's as 4-3 LB's, though, then quick, penetrating guys who can get after the passer have a ton of value in modern NFL defenses, and the DL should project either to a big, space-eating 3-4 DL, or to a smaller, stunting/penetrating 4-3 DT. Once one of these coaches makes some noise at the P5 level, I think that people's imaginations will get a lot better in recruiting and scouting, because this defense is only becoming more relevant with some of the anti-spread developments that are happening throughout college and the NFL.

At its schematic best, BM's offense can rival the Stanford offenses that we saw until 5-6 years ago. Super precise, slice-and-dice run game in the front with multiple TE's and a FB. The OL has been a massive problem toward realizing that vision, and when you look at our OL coach's resume, you see that there's really no reason to believe in him, IMO. Do we really want an OL coach whose peak was coaching for Rick Neuheisel's UCLA teams? Assistant hires matter, and on the offensive side of the ball we don't have many guys that anyone else would want. It's easy to blame that on budget, but there are always coaches out there for guys who know how to find them. If Wilcox had that eye, he would've been successful and, frankly, would've probably been out of here.

I haven't done a Pellini study, but my understanding is that he was much more of a true 4-down front guy. In any defense you'll have ways to get 4 and 5 first-level defenders, but in the 3-3 that fourth guy can be any one of the three LB's, so there's more versatility in how you get into different looks (guys in this tree will literally say "We have five different ways to get into an Over front." It's something that they see as a huge part of their system). Also, White's defense isn't particularly big on 2-gapping, with a lot more movement and penetration, especially from the LB's that are adding in via the blitz. If you're using a blitzing LB to do the job that a DT would do in a more traditional 4-2 alignment, then that guy won't be 2-gapping over an OG! Again, I haven't studied Pellini, but was his Peso a guy who could play the deep middle like a FS, or was he more of a NB/OLB tweener (essentially a Nickel Sam LB)? From a personnel standpoint, the Long 3-3-5 is a lot closer to the three-high Nickel looks that are becoming trendy out of Iowa State, but the fronts and pressures are significantly more aggressive, so you'll get more guys in the box and more blitzing, with many fewer drop-8 coverages.

I wouldn't worry too much about that comparison. RichRod's DC stayed at WVU when he went to Michigan, and the DC's that he brought to Ann Arbor weren't part of that coaching tree. The 3-3-5 was created in the era of pro-style 90's offense, and offenses across the country have only gone more spread in the 12 years since RichRod was at UM (not to say that it's the same in every conference, of course). Running this kind of thing just requires the understanding that you're relying on multiplicity and movement to attack the run game, and any time you're relying on scheme in that way, you're heavily dependent of your DC's gameplanning ability.

I wish, hah. I just started diving into coaching materials and doing film study about 12 years ago, and since then I've just been grinding and learning more every day. This channel is the pay-off of all that work.
