Old motherboards battery replacement

Old motherboards usually feature rechargeable "barrel" batteries which often tend to leak and damage the board.
Those are usually replaced by coin batteries - CR2032. However it's usually not a "plug and play" task.
On this video I explore an alternative way I have been thinking of.

I only understand basic things like how to solder or what is important to connect negative and positive wires, but this is cool to watch, you are directly immersed in this work.

You can just stick the battery to the side of the case somewhere, it's away from the slots, chips, whatever. Elegant solution anyway and a nicely made video, nice work!

Thanks Ted! Indeed once those boards are in a case, the battery can be velcro’ed on the chassis. But for now I don’t have an AT case and my previous solution was not working well as the battery/cables were coming off or being damaged when bagging and storing the boards. Thanks for watching!

@@tony359 Thats also my problem. I don't plan to put all my boards in cases. Even if I would have enough cases, I certainly don't have the space. One day I'll have a room with all these boards sitting on a shelve ready to use, so I can pull them out and experiment with them. A working coin cell attached to the board would be perfect.

The hook-and-loop strips on the holder are actually a neat idea. I will stick with the standard pin headers though, as I've typically replaced them during the battery damage repair and won't risk taking them out again. Often the trace/pad damage is pretty bad in the area of those external battery pin headers so I don't want to apply additional force there by using a latching header. Funny: The moment you were using those cut Dupont cables I was thinking "Hmm for me, these things break off all the time where they've been soldered". I think those cheap Dupont cables from aliexpress are not made from copper. Maybe CCA.

Oh absolutely, the less you tinker with those damaged traces the better! But all my battery holders were falling apart (yes those dupont cables are horrible!) so I went for the extra step! It's a shame that there isn't a plug-n-play solution for those batteries, a holder that fits in the Varta space and allows to use a CR2032. Thanks for watching!

I have this motherboard and a round 2032 holder can be made to fit after pushing some components away slightly (the one you show here seems slightly bigger than the ones I use, the ones with the spring on the side where the CR2032 click in instead of the ones with a spring contact going over the cell where the cell needs to slide under it). My go to is not to add a diode but to disable the charging circuit on the motherboard itself whenever possible. In this particular case It's done by lifting the resistor under the cache chip U51 (second one counting from the SIMM slots) and the diode D2 all the way in the corner of the board (next to the last isa slot). In my opinion such solution seems neater than having an external battery dangling about

Which one of the many I showed? :) I don't particularly like external batteries either but sometimes finding a suitable holder is difficult. Great to hear you managed to fit one in though! Thanks for watching!

@@tony359 I meant the first round one you show. The difference from the ones I got, besides the retention mechanism for the battery, is that mine has a thinner plastic square side (doesn't "overhang" as much) where the positive contact is so it can just barely fit between those ferrite filters and after pushing them slightly away. There are also holders that have flat sides so even if for round batteries are more rectangular shaped but for some reason I find them ugly even if I think they might fit better in some cases

I’m always happy to explore alternative options when it comes to batteries. One of my viewers recommended an smd holder for my PS/2 and it worked out beautifully! Thanks for watching

A barrel Battery has 3,6 Volts. External Bat. of the time had 3,6 to 4,5 Volts. A CR2032 has only 3 V - Diode = 2,3 V. Could this become a problem? The little black plugs are available as 4 pin versions. They are sitting much more solid.

Hey thanks for your comment! My understanding is that the external battery pins are designed for non-rechargeable batteries. I did check on the terminals and did not see a voltage on them when the motherboard was powered up. So I did not add a diode - so far no explosions :) Very good point about the voltage difference. You know, I did not consider that! That might be why one of those boards is often resetting the BIOS despite having a battery. Thanks for pointing that out. I guess I might need to find an alternative.

@@tony359 The 4-pin ext. Connector has a diode on board. Cable looks like this. 4 pin is only for stability ae01.alicdn.com/kf/H43a437f9526f4199b4c8e3ab5df0a90cI.jpg

@@uwepolifka4583 the link takes to a very small picture! :) I think I see what you mean. Rather than replacing the whole socket on the MB, I could just get a proper Dupont connector and that should work ok. Yes, that might work even though I found all the dupont leads I have are pretty thin and solder them to something makes a very weak point on the joint. I'm sure better ones can be found but it might not be as easy! Anyways, obviously there are 1000 different ways to do this! Thanks for mentioning your view, always appreciated!

is it dangerous to unsolder one of those blue batteries? I need to remove one, and would do it as quickly as possible on each post of the blue barrel battery
