This crochet granny rectangle pattern is beginner friendly and great for blankets! I will show you how to make a rectangle shape using the classic, traditional granny stitch. The granny stitch has a retro vintage vibe and makes fun scrap busting projects!
If you love the traditional granny stitch and are tired of the same old granny square you will love making rectangles. You can easily adjust size by changing up your foundation starting chain to make table runners, placemats, scarves, blankets and so much more!
This stitch uses all beginner friendly stitches - single crochet, double crochet and chain stitches.

I was given some great advice for calculating the number of stitches in the starting chain, you subtract width of finished blanket from length, and that's your length of chain. EG - you want a blanket 40x34, your starting chain would be 6 inches long. The blanket will grow proportionately.

Super glad this tutorial was on here. I've been crocheting since I was 7 and I'm now almost 45. My nan and mum taught me how to crochet together. This was one of the things I did first. One was a granny square and the other was a granny rectangle because, you know, you have to learn both haha. I actually forgot how to start the granny rectangle and this was a great help. Thanks heaps. All I needed to remember was the beginning.

Does anyone know how many you would chain to make a king or queen size? This pattern is just AWESOME! I Think I can do this one! Thank you! ❤❤❤
@nanascraftyhome
@nanascraftyhome Жыл бұрын
So that will depend on the yarn weight you will be using. The sample shown in the video with medium #4 worsted weight yarn and 20 (18+2) foundation chains after 10 rounds had an approx size of 9" x 15". Each round with my gauge is adding approx 1" to the size. So, based on what size a king is - approx 100" x 108". So I would need to add an additional 93 rounds to reach 108" in length which would add 93" to the width for a total of 102". That would end up pretty close to the desired size but you could also go down to a foundation chain of 17 (15 + 2), work up a swatch and see what your measurements would be. I hope that isn't too confusing and actually helps! So glad you love it! 💕🌸

I’m just a beginner and like this pattern. I’ve gotten to the size I want- how do you finish off? Several others I’ve done finish with a single crochet in each stitch around the perimeter.
@nanascraftyhome
@nanascraftyhome 9 ай бұрын
It depends on what you are looking for on the finished look. Do you want to add a border or leave as is? If you aren't adding a border you could simply finish as is or to tighten the edge you could simply add the single crochet stitches around the outside edge. If adding sc stitches only work sc into the stitches not the space between clusters and then work 3 sc stitches in the ch-2 corner spaces. I hope that helps! 💕🌸

Ooh boy, I'm having trouble! I'm trying to just learn the right stitch, so I'm not changing yarn at the end of the row(s). The instructions for ending a color and starting a new one are great, but if I'm just continuing with the same yarn, what's my stitch going to look like? Do I do 4 clusters at the end of round 2 and continue from there? (Cluster ch2 cluster ch2 cluster ch2 cluster, if I'm counting correctly.) Then I'd continue with the 3rd round, right? Thanks for the tutorial. I guess since I'm not switching colors I'm getting confused!

Tonya to make a porch rug would you change anything like yarn or needle?
@nanascraftyhome
@nanascraftyhome Жыл бұрын
I would recommend changing up the yarn to something durable that will hold up to a lot of abuse. Cotton is a good choice but does have a tendency to stretch out of shape if it gets wet a lot. T-shirt yarn would be a good choice but can get pricey. Macrame yarn would give your rug a more rustic look. Acrylic would definitely work because it is very durable and won't break the bank. Just make sure to change the hook size to match the yarn weight you are using. I hope that helps! 🌸

Loved your instructions for this How can you do a border for this granny rectangle?
@nanascraftyhome
@nanascraftyhome Ай бұрын
You have many different options for a border on a granny rectangle! You could work a base of single crochet stitches - working a sc in each dc stitch around + 3 sc stitches in each corner. Or you could work pretty much any border right onto the last round - either working into each stitch or use a shell stitch border that would work in the spaces between the dc clusters, or work a block stitch border - work one round of sc in each sp between clusters and ch-2 between sc stitches like this one: nanascraftyhome.com/crochet-easter-blanket/

Hi Tanya Thank You for sharing this pattern so patiently that made a novice feel like it is doAble. Just one thing wasn’t mentioned. What if we are trying to do it just one color yarn. So it needs to just go round and round but it wasn’t mentioned where to go after the first corner without cutting off and changing color. If you can let me know that would be great!!!
@nanascraftyhome
@nanascraftyhome 5 ай бұрын
Happy to help! If you are working with one color instead of fastening off you would sl st join at the end of round 2 to the top of the ch-3 of the first cluster made, then slip stitch in the next two dc sts of the cluster to the space between clusters, sl st in the space and work a beginning cluster in the space - ch 3, 2 dc in the same sp. Continue on in the pattern in the same way. I hope that makes sense! So glad you found the tutorial helpful! 💕🌸

You could work up a couple of swatches with different lengths of foundation chain, measure and then adjust as you need to. I hope that helps! 💕🌸

@@nanascraftyhome ok so do the 18 plus 2 and just keep going and do about 103 rounds to be king size, ? correct, thanks, i really appreciate it
@nanascraftyhome
@nanascraftyhome Жыл бұрын
@@kimscales5150 yes, I would start with that and then measure once you have done a few rounds and see what kind of measurements you are getting. With my gauge I was adding about 1" in width and length each round so I could easily know what my finished project would be and how many rounds I would need to get to a specific size. Happy to help!

If I want to end up with a blanket 48" X 60," how many stitches in the base chain?

If I wanted to make an afghan measuring approximately measuring 50" by 60" How many chains would you start with?
@nanascraftyhome
@nanascraftyhome 10 ай бұрын
A lot will depend on the gauge you have with the yarn and hook you choose. If you were to have a similar gauge to mine I would start with a foundation ch in the neighborhood of (72 - 78) +2 range. After about 4-6 repeat rounds, measure and see if you will end up in the ballpark of your desired finished measurements. I hope that helps!

If you're not switching colors how do you get back to the center of that chain two space? If you're continuing on with the same color it's awkward to be in the top of the original chain three while trying to do the first stitches of the second row in the space to the right of where you are

Absolutely happy to help! Yes, you would want to slip stitch into the top of those stitches to get to the ch-2 corner space when you aren't changing colors from round to round. I hope that helps! I should have included that info in the video for you. Thanks for watching 💕🌸

Can you turn your work after each round of this project? I was taught to do it to prevent the entire project from having any twisting.

What if you don’t switch colors?
@nanascraftyhome
@nanascraftyhome 9 ай бұрын
Great question! If you aren't changing colors I would recommend slip stitching over the previous round's dc stitches to the first space then work sl st, ch 3, 2 dc in same sp and then continuing on. That way fewer ends to weave in and no fastening off. I hope that helps!

If you don’t want to change colors how do you continue the next round? I had to slip-stitch over to get where you joined a new color and proceed from there. If not joining a new color, what do you do?

If you don’t want to change colors, chain three and make a cluster in the same stitch. You can use the same color yarn throughout the project. Another option is using multicolored yarn for a different effect.
