I keep coming back to this clip. I saw the show with Tyne Daly and she is truly remarkable. Before she even speaks, her face and body language says so much. I want to cry every time I see this because it so thoroughly encapsulates the depth of the double horror of dealing with AIDS and homophobia from those we loved.

This scene is now so much more haunting in the wake of terrence’s death.

Thank you Tony Awards for sharing this with all us actors who dream of Broadway. Who dream of doing the work on a higher level. It is always quite moving to see these wonderful performances-even if just for a couple of minutes.

If the Tonys had a category for Best Playwriting for plays like they do for Musicals (Best Book; on the play side, Best Play is shared between the producers and the playwright), this one would have been a shoe-in and Terrance McNally would have been more than deserving of it. This was truly a crowning achievement for the late McNally. Unfortunately given circumstances and timing for this play/playwright - Best Play that year went to All The Way, which absolutely deserved it (big production, lots of money, starry cast, etc) and this was also the year Audra McDonald made history when she won for Best Lead Actress in a Play, for Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill (the one category she hadn't yet won) - but 99% of it is her singing - even though the show is categorized as a Play. Sometimes you just get the unfortunate short end of the stick (I feel any other year Daly would have won) but basically all this to say the playwriting here is just nothing short of extraordinary.
