Id say boxing it is easier to learn the basics which is quite often all you need to get out of a bad situation whereas ju jitsu is more complicated and is less affective against getting hit in the head but if you know both then thats Ideal and will help tremendously in a street fight to not get hurt

I've trained jiu jitsu for almost three years now, three to four times a week and i've only had one confrontation on the street in that time and i can certainly say that my grappling helped to prevent the situation getting worse for myself and the people around me. Jiu jitsu is great for self defence, but more importantly, it's great for self confidence. Just like any valid martial art, such as boxing, it gives you that sense that you're comfortable with yourself and you know that you can handle a situation. They both have great merit and it's like choosing apples and oranges. Both are great for you.

I boxed for 8 years, and the last 12 since my son was born for fitness, I'm also a purple belt. I used to work the doors and would always rely on my boxing in a fight. If a fight went to the ground the first thing I would do is get up before someone decides to put the boot in. For sport, BJJ is great because there's no potential head trauma and it is useful in a street situation where you need to escape when someone's in mount or you can rear-naked or standing guillotine someone in a fight, but if you don't mind a broken knuckle every now and then, boxing edges it. However, the best martial art is the art of fighting without fighting.

yeah thats one thing with streets fights, you never want to be on the ground unless its some shady dude in some dark aley with no one around, but most street fights id say occur around bars, night clubs, some sort of resorts and shit like that, and chances are they have a friend around that will come out running towards you, and if you are on the ground trying to choke the guy out, 100% you are getting kicked in the jaw. But id say if you are a pure boxer, def get some BJJ lessons for like few months, will def help you out to at least understand the basics of the ground work.

I think the biggest benefit boxing has in a self defense situation is the movement. You can avoid damage or pop a few shots then get out of dodge if he’s buddies jump in. BJJ in 1v1 is great but the multiple attackers issue or getting slammed on concrete are issues most academies never address

I've been rather consistently doing some form of martial arts from around the age of 3. My dad started us boxing, then karate, but always boxing (especially sparring). I eventually moved into Muay Thai, Jiu Jitsu and MMA. I still believe that the best thing for self defense is the basics of jiu jitsu or wrestling, to create space and get up if someone pins you and then... long distance running. Self defense is not about beating the person in front of you, but getting away safely. If you are standing and the person in front of you doesn't have a hold of you, turn and run. If your ego gets in the way and you want to fight and beat the person in front you, that's another question all together and you might want to start looking at yourself and your situational awareness. Self defense should never be about engaging, but rather disengaging and getting away SAFELY.

Couldn’t agree more! In a “street fight,” you don’t want to be on the ground as you are susceptible to kicks to the dome piece because there are no rules in a street fight other than stay alive. BJJ and MMA are great techniques to know if you find yourself on the ground… but you are better off using them to get back to your feet quickly.

@Yang Mojo that guy thinks you want to head kick in a street fight, don't waste your words. anyone who actually thought about it figured out that you don't want to stand on one leg on the street ever. it's not like in the ring, there is no canvas. in fact i have learned over the years that the kyokushin/tigerstyle horse stance is meant to train you to sit on your punches and maintain a low center of gravity. from there i like to add the grappling clinch, overhook, underhook, whatever. and you can hit like tyson from that position. the dynamic of the bladed vs squared stance in karate and kung fu mirrors the one from boxing and mma. kyokushin is squared off, other karate is more bladed. same with kung fu, tiger style is the one meant to be all power strikes and conditioning, and they too sit on their strikes to make them power shots, train their body like thai fighters.
@basteagui

i definitely want both legs on the ground on the street at all times and ready to sprawl or knee at any moment, always fancy boxing footwork to safely reposition. never kick on the street unless they are already in a really really bad position, otherwise you risk getting taken down. also thrown. one throw on the street is game over. getting spiked on the head is illegal in mma. now have someone do that to you on concrete!

I have to throw a shout-out to select, traditional Jiu Jitsu schools that do take time to focus on standup, distance management, and punch defense (I attend one of these, and we even use gloves and punches to keep our self defense honest). I started following you for your boxing content. As a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, I appreciate your additional content on BJJ. Regarding the striking issue, I always tell people to add combat jiu jitsu to their training. It is a safer way to train the concept of striking with grappling. Jiu Jitsu is very different in a striking context. The technique is the same, just different. For example, I prefer open guard when adding striking (combat jiu jitsu). It helps manage the distance better and not be in the danger zone (impact zone of a striker). Regards, Marlon.

It is also worth mentioning that BJJ is great but for controlled situations. Situations where you know no one else is joining the fight. You don't want to fight two guys while being on the floor. Also in situations where you are 100% sure that the other guy doesn't have a hidden knife in his pocket because if you try to grapple someone with a knife, you're dead. People say 90% of fights end on the ground but forget that about 100% start in standing positions. So BJJ is the best thing you can use in 1v1 situations while boxing is great if you facing more than one opponent: you can strike one and still be able to run away, while being on the ground you cannot run. So in situations where you do not control everything arround you better use boxing or muay thai/Kickboxing in order to stay standing a be able to run away or use a martial art that grounds the opponent but keeps you standing like Wrestling or Judo.

Bjj rolling is also useful to keep the game striking! Here is my reasoning; While it was sparring with a fellow mma buddy, it was intense; clocked me right in the nose and I lost my balance, fell backwards. Looked like a Classic knock out. He was coming to deliver that TKO. I hit my back, and my instinct just kicked in while the momentum was going so I, rolled backwards to my feet, ducked his rushing hook, and countered with a right straight to the chin. Probably never pull it off again, but I 100% attribute that to the constant practice of backwards rolls; he was not expecting someone who looked like he was out on his feet to roll backwards and keep fighting. Disclaimer; I still got my ass beat; but it was a cool moment from one less trained guy with a more trained guy. For half a moment I felt cooool as hell. Lol

@@basteagui The examples you describe are very reasonable in street fight, shit will go down on the streets that are not trained for in most combat sports because they're too risky to apply in a "friendly" competition format. That doesn't change the fact that MMA as an "organized system" is an overall stronger option for self defense than picking between EITHER boxing OR BJJ because it covers both striking and grappling fundamentals. For self defense, we should train both striking and grappling to be able to defend in most scenarios and maybe also train "outlier" situations like attacking the windpipe etc. which is not normally part of a combat sports curriculum.

@@kristianjensen5877 i don't like the prepackaged aproach of most mma gyms, or mma in general. it doesnt make you even decent at boxing. i believe in adding wrestling to boxing (or even better bare knuckle fighting that is now making a comeback), the historical european arts for warfare and self defense. and being aware of how they do things in asia a little bit like one or two things. i think this is more of an approach for everywhere that isn't spending time on your back and more realistic for the street. when i can use wrestling to stuff takedown attempts. and yes i specifically, deliberately train all of those banned techniques and more, like eye gouging (not as grappling but as a striking technique, from outside jon jones style) and the elbow that bloodied up fedor that got the other guy disqualified on illegal technique.

Great video as always Tony. I agree 100% that one should train in both. I've trained for decades striking but the early UFCs gave a huge wakeup call to the strikers courtesy of Royce Gracie as you mentioned. Many fights go to the ground but almost all fights start standing up so you have to know both. I would say for someone starting off to spend a year in a striking art and at least 2 years in BJJ as it's a bit harder to learn. To a striker the world is vertical, just up or down. To a grappler up, down, right, left, diagonal; it's all irrelevant because their frame of reference is ONLY their opponent. An epiphany occurred to me when watching one of the early UFCs and a BJJ fighter, who was upside down with the back of his head and neck on the mat and the rest of his body and his feet pointing straight up in the air, got his fully standing opponent to tap out from a joint lock. And kudos to you Tony for starting BJJ and rounding out your considerable knowledge and skills. Thanks for all you share with us.

LOVED this video! As a guy who trained in BJJ for about 14 years, I can tell you there are great lessons and reflexes to be had. But I have mad respect for the strikers, which is why I'm currently training Muay Thai. I'm not very good, but I'm getting better every day. To choose one over the other is a mistake. BOTH is the right answer! I wish you every success in your BJJ journey. Thanks for your great content. Best wishes from Canada.

Excellent points regarding pros and cons of boxing and Jiu Jitsu. I have very limited boxing experience, a lot of karate and Jiu Jitsu. Great respect for boxing, but for me being able to submit and control someone is a game changer. I think a boxer who knows Jiu Jitsu is a formidable opponent. Studying the self defence aspects of Jiu Jitsu is important. Great to see you enjoying the experience and will see how you get on at competition!

In my late 50s now and can speak with a great deal of personal experience having been in many street fights, bar brawls, etc. Also, very experienced in what I consider the best base a person can have for self defense at the time I trained. Before I list them I want to make it clear, there is a HUGE difference in self-defense and prepared fighting. When two people are prepared to fight one another there no longer exist an element of surprise. The element of surprise is a big plus. Self-defense is based on surprise and trying everything possible to actually avoid conflicts, and in almost all cases anyone who is highly trained usually embraces the practice of avoiding conflicts. With all that said, this is what I was successful in and trained heavily in for many years. Folkstyle wrestling, boxing, WKA Kickboxing (not US PKA), and a touch of JKD (wasn't much of that around in 80s). Training in all these styles one of the best things I learned was proper distance and timing, you'll be surprised how effective just not getting hit or being taken down can be🤣. The other thing is you gain a sense of calm, if you're constantly training in combat with other high level people a street confrontation doesn't concern you, unless you're confronted by multiple attackers and you're by yourself. Bit older now and would like to try some BJJ, that wasn't around when I was younger. One last thing I will say that makes a big difference is one's will. So whatever you train in, train hard, and try to avoid confrontations. But if the confrontation cannot be avoided, believe in yourself, don't give up, and if you overwhelm your attacker don't over do it.

Good honest video. Been doing bjj 11 years now ,also a couple of years self defence . Before I done self defence I thought I could punch , but made me realise I couldn't punch for toffee . I think boxing would be better against multiple opponents , as I wouldn't want to be on the ground where I could get a boot in the head . However, I would feel confident 1 on 1 with bjj against people even bigger than myself . I also think bjj is fantastic for women as , if it was a sexual attack , it learns you how to deal with someone who may be bigger and stronger and dealing with people from claustrophobic positions

Great advice Tony, "train both". I've been doing BJJ for 28 years and done a little boxing and a few other martial arts as well. I've worked in security for 35 years, 14 years doing crowd control at hotels and nightclubs. The toughest people I've worked with in crowd control were people that had done a lot of boxing, they are conditioned to being hit and can also strike back very effectively. Also great with multiple attackers. Jiu jitsu is also very effective. The two arts together are great.

The 'two best arts' are no limit wrestling and dagger fighting. Train/integrate the low kicks and sweeps of Savate and/or Muay Thai and you're prepared for the worst 'self defense' situations. Rest is organized warfare or highly contextual (longer blade/tool or a firearm or fighting on very unstable ground). 'Dirty' Wrestling and short blade(s) work is universal. That's exactly why thugs will train them worldwide and only add a few sucker punches & eye jabs as far as 'boxing' goes. Now if more than '2 arts' can be considered, 'kickboxing' and boxing are very useful.

Awesome stuff! I’m a bjj black belt and used to train so much rickson gracie self defense back in the late 90s. I used to hate it and think it was soooo boring but now I realize the importance of what they engrained in me. I’m so thankful. I started mixing boxing into the mix in 2004 and then Muay Thai and wrestling in 2009 along with catch wrestling. I’ve now come to realize that every body type is different and enemy Martial art has its pros and cons. Personally, I strongly dislike the guard and live the wrestling aspect of scrambles. I love the clock for Muay Thai and knees and elbows. Boxing makes your footwork incredible. Jiu jitsu gives you balance and the ability to take away or create space to capitalize. For straight self defense, I’d go with running. Based off personal experiences, I’ve been jumped too many times after one of their buddies is getting beat up while I’m using jiu jitsu. I’ve used boxing with throwing a couple 1-2s and then running to save myself from getting jumped lol. I now own my own self defense company and incorporate all styles but focus on the mentality and situational awareness. Worst case scenarios on what to do, how to get up and run. I’m you’re cornered, then bjj works fine, but if there’s weapons… you better pray and utilize some of that karma you’ve built up 😂

I see boxing as the best martial art, because boxing is more effective than wrestling and bjj, is true that boxing doesn't teach you what to do if you're on the ground but it's the best way to finish a fight, for example if you're fighting in a street fight against three opponents, how can you end up fighting with them with wrestling or bjj ??? You can't even subdue one opponent because the others will destroy you, but boxing on the other hand is the best martial art to teach you how to punch harder and deliver a knockout that will finish the fight

It great to see Tony Jeffries experiencing something new and sharing his experiences from the perspective of a beginner. It's also refreshing to hear a KZfaq influencer with professional fighting experience state that, yes, training does count towards being able to defend yourself. It has become the trend for some influential martial arts KZfaqrs to totally dismiss sport fighting and martial arts - even the pragmatic ones like MMA, boxing, and BJJ calling them sports and ill equipped for actual self-defence. In fact, one well known martial arts KZfaqr, who is a former professional MMA fighter, who I respect, boldly states: "Most martial artists don't know how to fight." I do agree that some fighting arts are more suited to give you self-defence skills while others are not. That said, I would say that both boxing and BJJ (or other grappling art) are useful for self-defence for different purposes. Boxing (as well as kickboxing, and muay Thai) not only teaches you how to strike a moving target and evading strikes, but it also trains you the conditioning to absorb hits. No one wants to take a hit, not even in a light semi-contact spar, but boxing (and kickboxing, muay Thai, and some of the harder karate styles) will train that mental focus to not fold under pressure of getting punched. This is where untrained fighters fall apart is when they get hit for real the first time and go into a confused state of shock and panic -- especially if you get cut or bleed. There is that argument that you want to stay on your feet in a self-defence situation because there might be multiple attackers although I think that's often overblown because most attacks - unless you frequent rough bars or neighborhoods - are probably more 1-on-1 like a road rage incident, or some street person with mental health issues attacking you. The one valid argument for not taking someone to the ground is that there are no comfy mats on the street to fall on. Example: during an MMA class I was taking one time we were doing take take down drills. I was a three striped BJJ blue belt at the time and my opponent for the shark tank drill was a beginner. I easily got a single leg but my head was out of position to his outside and he instinctively guillotined my head by instinct as I drove him to the mat and my head got spiked ("DDT" in professional wrestling circles). While I was okay due to the mat and my excessively hard head the situation may have been a different outcome if it were on concrete. Now although one can argue that you can do a safer standing throw like a seoi nage, uchi-mata, or kosoto gari, you are unlikely to use those techniques due to their low probability unless you are a black belt in judo. As a BJJ guy you are unlikely to be really, really good at those throws especially because the first two expose your back so you're unlikely to train them regularly and so a typical BJJ guy is unlikely to be as well versed with standing throws as a judo brown or black belt especially since the attacker is unlikely to be wearing a do-gi. The BJJ bread and butter is likely to be a double leg, and single leg and those moves entail some risk because you are driving the opponent to the ground and going with him on to hard concrete. However BJJ is relevant if the conditions are right, and especially if the attacker happens to be wearing a Golden Gloves Champion T-shirt! BJJ has it's benefits against a single attacker; especially if they are more aggressive than you. If you can clinch up and even take them to the ground they are unlikely to be able to throw any kind of meaningful punches. BJJ is also a more humane way of dealing with a single attacker as video footage of Ryan Hall, and Matt Serra subduing aggressors in a restaurant and holding them -- again, evidence that many attacks in daily life are likely to be 1-on-1 than the worst case multiple attackers in a bar scenario -- unless you happen to be in a bar. Also, what if you're getting overwhelmed by punches? What do MMA fighters automatically do when they are getting overwhelmed with punches -- they will go for a double leg or other takedown to try and survive. The one argument I use against those you say that ground grappling is pointless for street self-defence because they would never take the fight to the ground is: what if you get taken to the ground? Every punk who watches UFC has seen a double-leg and probably tried it on a friend while roughhousing. If you get taken to the ground do you know how to escape? Do you know how to bridge escape if you get mounted? Do you know how to do a technical standup so you don't get kicked in the face while scrambling up? One martial art that has not been mentioned as very good for self-defence is muay Thai. Muay Thai addresses multiple ranges. Although it lacks the ground game, it addresses kicking range, punching range, knee and elbow range, and clinching range. It has the strikes using 8 limbs, it has the conditioning to keep you physically fit, it has taken clinching and elevated it to a specialized set of skills, and has very effective trips throws from the clinch and you do not need sleeves or lapels to do them. But if I had to choose between boxing and BJJ for street self-defence...hmmmmm...tough choice because they are both important. But for me I'm going to say BJJ specifically designed for self-defence (e.g. Gracie Combatives). No fancy worm guards, no lasso grips or berimbolos,...just dealing with an aggressive unskilled attacker throwing haymakers. Of course, there's the other option: stay out of trouble, don't piss other people off, learn to keep the ego in check and walk away...run if you must because a street attack is no about winning; it's about making sure no one gets seriously hurt especially you.

Great video! But a point of clarification: "Street" BJJ, as taught by the Gracie system, does teach defense against punches. The first level of belt earned in this system is the Combatives belt, which is 100% focused on street defense. This belt comes before Blue. In the early stages, Gracie BJJ is different than sport BJJ, which makes the Gracie system appear deficient in tournaments among White belts and even early Blue belts, however this does even out during the Blue level.

Size really does matter in jujitsu and grappling in general though, and I'd much rather get in a striking match with a bigger guy than a grappling match. Difference is that jujitsu gives you more pressure testing against a variety of weight classes, where boxers tend to train and pressure test only in or around others in their weight class.
@XxBobTheGlitcherxX
@XxBobTheGlitcherxX Жыл бұрын
According to what you said it would be better to do a grappling match since BJJ gave you the experience to fight bigger guys. A striking match with an opponnent that outclasses you in range and power would be incredibly difficult. So someone who did BJJ&Boxing should prefer a grappling fight against someone bigger than him in general. Also its really important to not overlook the possibility for damage control in a grappling match that makes it a lot more suited for real life situations.
@-_ellipsis_-5219
@-_ellipsis_-5219 Жыл бұрын
@@XxBobTheGlitcherxX what I'm getting at is that it's the training experience that makes it better, not the art. If strikers trained more against varying weight classes like grapplers tend to do, you'd get the same impression. No martial art is designed to "beat the bigger guy", the bigger guy will always have the advantage. They're going to have even more of an advantage in a grappling fight, but striking diminishes mass advantage because weaknesses aren't as easily covered by size - a heavy liver, diaphram, or temple /jaw shot can drop them. But if you put equally skilled grapplers where one has a 50 lb advantage, he's going to win so much more often than you would find with two strikers and the same weight disparity.

However, if you're outnumbered or in a brawl with multiple people, your adversary isn't going to wait for you to finish before attacking you. That's were striking and boxing comes most in handy. It allows for evasive footwork and offensive capabilities that allow you to get in and out.

In savage brawls, body slams are as common as headbutts and wild swings.. Slamming someone on the ground is very quick. Grappling doesn't mean paced or slow or sophisticated or complex. A feint and a good bodylock before slamming the guy on his head/back is very direct and as brutal as a power punch after a feint. Problem with 'fluid' grappling and ground fighting is that you're open for sucker punches and soccer kicks to the head-neck. But it's a false idea to think that boxers have better 'brawl balance' than wrestlers or even basic rugby players. Think about it, they're athletes doing good on the ground but a huge part of their game is TO STAY UPRIGHT (even partially collapsed) UNDER PRESSURE (aka lots of actions directly targetting their legs/balance..). Tons of boxers will go flying after basic trips/sweeps.. Kickboxers tend to have better dynamic/'wild' balance than boxers. That's exactly why the basic boxing+wrestling combo was so popular in modern European History (including the Americas of course). A wrestler focused on escaping is very very hard to grab, let alone control. A boxer doing his best to be evasive needs a 'clean' space around him and most of the time doesn't use a basic sticky palm to the forehead to control distance.. The absolute advantage of striking arts in brawls is the perception and reading of the punches launched and the quick adjusting of distance to counter/deliver solid hits with what looks like 'instinct & timing' from the outside. But again, brawling is an art and lots of boxers in tunnel vision mode will get sucker punched by terrible strikers with just enough experience to favor attacks behing the shoulder..

Hehe. I never got into a street fight after learning jiu jitsu. I learnt Jiu Jitsu in the US where it is relatively safe. I did get into street fights after learning boxing. Again this was in the late 80’s in India. In fact that is why I learnt boxing. I think in order to learn to fight in the street you must learn to fight in the street.

I went pro in mma and Muay thai/k1 and I have over a decade of Bjj experience, and I can’t stress it enough that BJJ practitioners are prepared to get hit in the face. I agree wholeheartedly that it’s a huge game changer, and that one difference is all your opponent needs to win a street fight.

I've been in BJJ for a 2 months. Im just starting to be able to analyze what I did wrong and what I should have done differently after getting choked or submitted. That may not be much, but I feel like I'm maybe a month or 2 away from being able to use it in a practical scenario if I had to. I plan on learning some standup, once I reach some basic BJJ proficiency. Great content, Mr Tony!

Certainly good to know both! There are self defence practitioners though who will advise avoiding the ground in case of a weapon such as a knife being drawn when you’re tied up, and not being able to see it, and also the risk of other attackers appearing during the grappling. However having the knowledge is still great.

Hi tony i agree both can be very useful but in a street situation you really do not want to end up on the ground i worked as a doorman for thirty years one night outside the club i ended up on the floor to restrain someone and his mate penalty kicked me in the head and broke my cheek bone in three places and chipped all my teeth,So just to remind it is not the best thing to end up on the floor.

I'd generally say pick a sport with sparring. And also a sport that you like so that you keep at it. Use that as your base. Add in some street stuff like groin shots, headbutts etc and you'll do just fine. A lot of fighters, boxers and grapplers, are street fighters anyway and understand that on the street you can do things that you're not allowed to do in the ring or on the mat. Use the sport as your base and add some stuff. Also, if you're dealing with your average street thug, most of the time pure sports techniques will be enough so that you don't even have to get dirty.

I think a lot of the cons you spoke about BJJ in the intro apply mostly to sport jiu jitsu. If you look at Royce Gracie jiu jitsu, we practive striking and strinking defence as well as take downs and other self defence scenarios. If you continue with the BJJ would be cool to see a video on you trying and comparing Gracie jiu jitsu to sport!

Even Gracie jiu jitsu wouldn't work in a street fight. Jiu jitsu takes time to submit an opponent. In a street fight, you only have so much time until multiple people jump in. If you're a good striker, you may be able to end the fight quickly

It's easier for a grappler to take down a striker than it is for a striker to keep a grappler standing. That being said, in a street fight if you take it to the ground, his buddy is gonna come soccer kick you in the head. I totally agree that knowing both is super effective. Striking is the first line of defense. If it fails, you've got ground game too.

I wrestled nationally multiple times and for most my life and been doing jiu jitsu about 4 years now, but I've also boxed for over 12 years and I will say you need to learn both. Grappling and boxing. I found boxing was better for self defense against people who weren't as formidable as fighters, whereas grappling was better against people who had training. Either way, you have to learn both in my opinio

Geoff Thompson covered this decades ago. Boxing for primary self defence. Jiu Jitsu as the support system, either for when it goes to the ground when you don't want it to, or when a lower level of response is appropriate. Physical skills are however less important than situational awareness, conflict avoidance, de-escelation/verbal judo skills, managing your internal stress response and artifice to set up a shot if there is no other option.
