I have something similar, but I counter it with keeping myself on my toes with challenging myself. I have a 24-70, 35-150, 85mm 1.4, 200-600 and I plan on picking up a 14mm 1.8. I like to sometimes take only one lens and challenge myself, for example today I shot a whole day with my friends sigma 14mm 1.4 and I loved it, while he had my 35-150 at a sporting event.

I always shot with zooms, then I bought a Fuji X-T1 and a 23mm 1.4 and traveled all through Europe with the family with just that lens and got great photos that I was extremely happy with. Limitation helps creativity!

That sounds amazing! I need to do that! I get fomo and think I’d miss out if I don’t bring like my zoom lenses to capture so much but I need to just do it.

I've seen this debate plenty of times but I don't really understand it.. Maybe it's because of the way I shoot.. I first look at the scene, see a shot I want in my head and then try to create it with the gear. That means if I have a prime lens it might be impossible to create the shot I envisioned, therefore my creativity was hindered in a way.. On the other hand I don't get too bothered about it if I can't make the shot and just keep walking to my next inspiration.. It may sound like a conundrum, but I love shooting with my vintage lenses as much as I do with my modern zoom ones. They have their strengths and weaknesses but end of day is the joy of taking photos that counts for me! If you haven't tried vintage glass on your modern cameras I highly recommend it! 🤘

Definitely vintage lenses are fun! I have an adapted Pentax lens that I’ve used on my a7iv and it’s fun! But definitely would love to test more out eventually and see how they could inspire me!

I totally get you man. My shots felt more creative when I was primarily using prime lenses. Shooting zooms have definitely allowed me to get shots quicker but less so creative. There is an aspect of freedom for that though, especially during fast paced weddings. Some things I want to try is use primes during getting ready and receptions. Then use zooms during ceremony.

I can definitely see that! Primes make you move which I think it’s a good thing to help you stay creative I think in my eyes. But definitely zooms can help for faster outcomes for events like weddings when needed so I get that!

Whenever I go out for fun, I never bring my zooms. I'm super amateur and I feel like the options of a zoom lens would just make me over analyze, rather than just focus on the framing and composition.

I really got what you’re saying here.. in my opinion, it’s better to leave the 35-150 at home when you plan on taking photographs that are more towards artistic purposes and take something like a 35 or 24 instead. I use the 35-150 only for wedding shoots and those which need rapid lens changes. Also the 20-40 may not affect your creative perspective imo, ymmv.

I feel you on that! I might use my 20-40 more often or maybe use the TTartisan 50mm I got sent more often to just vary it up haha

Great video! I find that I feel more creative/enjoy my shoots a bit more with primes =) I also find having flawless autofocus on my a7rV leans me towards being lazy with my composition. Where my xt5… Ibetter be checking that shit twice ROFL…. I think about selling my Sony almost everyday 😅 That guarantee to not miss a shot at a wedding is hard to pass up tho . That GFX 100s ii looks like fun ;)

I’m there with you haha I’m contemplating selling my xe4 for a a7cii since I’m fine with that for the size and the full frame. We just got an gfx 50sii and it’s been awesome that it has also made me consider selling my a7iv and Fuji xe4 to get another one since I like the slower pace with it haha but then I have a feeling I’d maybe regret not having a fast AF camera for photos 😂

And I just got done making a video on the gfx 50sii while having my wife take portraits of me this time since I always take them of her haha and as well talk a bit of my thoughts on the camera and everything!
