At the end of the 2010 season, Rossi after 7 seasons with Yamaha, would leave the Japanese Factory to join Ducati from 2011, replacing the Honda bound Casey Stoner. What promised to be a successful relationship between an Italian rider and an Italian team, would end up being the opposite, and in this video, I go through Rossi's brief at Ducati and also explain why the partnership didn't work out.

I'm not sure the Ducati was catered to Casey's riding style. I don't think it was catered for anyone. Casey just happened to have riding style that allowed him to maximize it's strong points. By the time he left Ducati, he was just annoyed with it as everyone else.

The most amusing aspect of Rossi's term on the Ducati was how his worshipers changed their tune about the Ducati itself. When Casey Stoner was complaining about the chatter from the front end, he was derided for "being a complainer who is just making excuses for his own failings". But when Rossi couldn't muster a single victory, suddenly they were saying that it was the Ducati's front end chatter that was the problem. Meanwhile, Stoner wins another championship in dominating form.

I always wondered what could've been if Valentino worked together with Dall'Igna, oh man, the times of his arrival at Ducati were so wrong and ended quite badly. I don't know if he would've won a title, but surely he would've fought for a title
@tjroelsma
@tjroelsma 23 күн бұрын
Not necessarily: Rossi has always had a more flowing riding style and Ducati just never fit with him. The same can be said for the Rossi/Honda combination. Yes, he was successful with Honda, but still he went back to Yamaha, simply because that bike fit his riding style better.
@francescog5131
@francescog5131 22 күн бұрын
@@tjroelsma you have a point here, it's true that Valentino had a total different style compared to what the bike was requesting and that Yamaha was more adapted for his riding style, but at the same time I feel that his timing of arrival at Ducati was probably the worst possible. If he would've come in like 2015, it would have worked a lot better, and possibly under Dall'Igna's directives, Ducati would've built a bike that could've been closer to Valentino's style. I do feel that in this scenario, Valentino would've had a path similar to Lorenzo's at Ducati probably, but atleast this would've been better than the path he actually had. A risk that has never paid off

Satellite pretty much means independent team. So they aren't the official manufacturer team, although they can get support from the actual manufacturer team itself, so like for example with Pramac in 2024, which is the team that Jorge Martin rides for, they are running factory spec Ducatis, and that's because they have technical support from the Ducati Factory Team, which is the team that Pecco Bagnaia rides for.

While Casey Stoner proved he could absolutely dominate on a Ducati during his career, even he wasn't 100% confident with the bike. Specifically when it came to the corners. While it could rocket its way through the straights, it wasn't agile enough in the corners compared to Yamaha and Honda. Sidenot edit: Ducati's factory team and two of their three satellite teams, Pramac Racing and Gresini Racing, were the top three teams at the end of the 2024 season.

Honda's biggest mistake was to fire Dani Pedrosa. HE was the one who developed the Honda and kept Honda honest. Marquez is an exceptionally talented rider, but that same exceptional talent makes that he can make almost every bike work for him. With Pedrosa gone, Honda just focused on horsepower and topspeed and depended totally on Marquez to make the bike work, which he did for so many years. After Marquez' accident Honda found out that nobody else could even come close to performing with their bike and they somewhat tried to change course. But how half-heartedly it all was became clear when Marquez returned: now even he couldn't make the Honda work anymore.

rossi in 2010 was still fast and a top rider but when he joined ducati he lost two important years of his career when he was still capable of winning titles... rossi would have 100% won many more races if he had not joined ducati and he most likely wins another title. after not being competitive and struggling for 2 years i think joining back to yamaha again at 34 was always going to be incredibly hard because he had to learn a new bike again at 34 whereas if he stayed at yamaha through 2011 - 2012 then rossi would have had momentum for the 2013 season.

@@Ryan.T89 Ducati never built the bike around Rossi's indications, that's one of the reasons why he left. He insisted on Ducati building a stronger frame for the bike, but Ducati insisted that the tubular frame was their peculiarity. They argued a lot about it. Rossi was called also to make the bike ridable by others, because before that only Stoner could win on it, and the last championship Stoner rode the Ducati he didn't win the championship, and fell many times. So Rossi asked to change the frame. We're talking about the frame, together with the engine (which was underpowered when Rossi was in Ducati) and tyres (which changed when Rossi came, since Stoner had Bridgestone) these are the most important things on a bike. After Rossi left, Audi had just taken over over, the following year Ducati finally adopted a normal frame, abandoning the outdated tubular frame. How many times have I written frame? Maybe too many, sorry 😆

@@pepy977 Good for you, but there's more to winning a championship than your direct opponent not having the best year, because it's pretty much never between just two riders fighting for the championship. Even if Rossi had somewhat of a bad year, there were others who were competitive, so it wasn't a simple walk in the park for Hayden. Stoner had his moments, but he decided to quit very early in his career, as he decided that it was just too risky for him. That's a wise decision in my book. As to him being a moaner: some riders and drivers just need to instantly vent their frustration to get rid of it and move on, while others can hold it back till after the practice, qualifying or race and vent it in private. Rossi has done it all: at times he was very vocal in interviews directly after a practice, quali or race, at times he would vent in interviews days or even weeks after an event. He still has a fued with Marquez he's unable to let go, so does that make him a moaner as well?
