Awesome! Thank you so much for this video! I'm definitely grabbing a few of these books ASAP. My husband and children are part filipino. These will be great for our family.

I live in central California and there was a book written about a Hmong girl from my town. It is a great book about the clashing of two cultures and how that can have both negative and positive effects on both sides of the interaction. It was called "The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down". We are very lucky to live in a state where cultures get to interact and learn from each other.

Great recommendations! I would really recommend “The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down” - a great book on Hmong immigrants in the US and culture clashes between them and the US/Western values.

Thank you for the recommendations! One book I read for a YA lit class last year was American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang and it was very good at approaching discussions of having dual identities

Thank you so much for the great recommendations- these videos are my favorites! Another one to add is Daughter of Moloka'i. I know you've read the first novel and this one follows Rachel's daughter Ruth as she experiences the Japanese internment camps. It's not as good as the first, but nice to expand upon the first story!

disabilityinkidlit.com/2015/09/04/review-everything-everything-by-nicola-yoon/ Reconsider Everything Everything. I wanted so badly to like it, but it's such a bad portrayal of chronic illness/disability

Thank you for all of your recommendations. I love finding new titles to try. Since you mentioned having fewer books on the younger end of the spectrum, I thought I'd share a few from my library. I teach fourth grade and have been in upper elementary my whole career (26 years!). P is for Poppadoms: An Indian Alphabet Book by Kabir Sehgal & Surishtha Sehgal - My student who arrived from India in August gave this one her seal of approval. The Land I Lost and Water Buffalo Days: Growing Up in Vietnam by Quang Nhuong Huynh - memoirs of the author's childhood in Vietnam before the war Inside Out and Back Again by Thanhha Lai - family's escape from Vietnam, as well as author's experience her first year in US, written in verse Aru Shah and the End of Time (series) by Roshani Chokshi - haven't read this series myself, but my students rave about it The Name Jar by Yangsook Choi - picture book, good for discussion of identity The Year of the Dog and The Year of the Rat by Grace Lin - story of first-generation Chinese-American girl, focus on identity, also quite funny Also, have you heard about the sequel to Front Desk coming out in September? It's called Three Keys. I managed to find an Advance Reader's Copy, and my students are beside themselves to get their hands on it!

I appreciate that when you brought up the books particularly surrounding communism, you spoke on the good and the bad parts that came with it. Americans too often believe capitalism is the only way to go

I always love your book recommendations! I just found out I'm moving from 7-8 ELA to 6-8 Social Studies. I feel pretty comfortable with teaching American History, but what should I put on my summer reading list as I get ready to teach 6th grade ancient history?

It's very interesting to hear your history background because I am the opposite in terms of history knowledge. I did Asian Culture as one of my majors in school so when it comes to history, I am not well versed in things like African-American or even Indigenous history/culture which I need to know as a new teacher.

As a Filipino-American, I appreciate your videos and have learned so much from you. However, I want to help clarify that the term “minority” doesn’t refer to the number of members belonging to a specific social group in the US (8:15). The term helps capture the current dynamics (such as devaluation and less access to resources) toward a specific racial, ethnic, or social group.

The Latinos of Asia.. Lmao that's how my husband (born and raised in the PI, also Filipino) describes the Filipinos.
